Anyone who knows me knows I don't really like to watch "reality" TV, with one exception: "Survivor" is my one guilty pleasure, as it has been for the past 20 years. I've tried other "reality" shows but never lasted more than an episode or two before I got bored and/or disgusted and moved on. Actually, I prefer being entertained or educated when I watch the tube, which leaves most reality shows out of the running. I love story-telling, so I'll often choose to watch episodic TV – mystery, cop s...

At their July 26 meeting, Tehachapi Rotarians listened as Dixie King, PhD., from Transforming Local Communities, compared Kern County studies done in 2008 and 2014 that pointed out the increasing use of Methamphetamine drugs in the county over the six year period. They say it's an accomplishment and that the view from the top is worth the climb. I'll take their word for it. I have a friend who has climbed Mt. Everest – twice! That "sorta" separates the men from the boys, doesn't it? Today he is a retired professor of physiology. He didn't climb it because "it was t...
I found a copy of a speech delivered by California Division of Highways Edward T. Telford at a New Business Outlook luncheon in Lancaster in August 1962. The copy was discovered in my Mother Marion Deaver's files. Telford explained that in 1962 there were two state highways in the Antelope Valley and included U.S. Route 6 and State Route 138. At that time U.S. 6 ran from Los Angeles through Mint Canyon, Palmdale and Lancaster, to and beyond the Kern County Line. S.R. 138 ran from the Ridge...
Have you every wished you could go back in time? I have heard several people say they wished they could go back to the days when the air races were held at Mojave. Great sounds from magnificent warbirds, super nice pilots, no fences, no worries about terrorists, just easy going, exciting days that filled all of your senses with joy! I met some really great people at our last Plane Crazy Saturday who like reading this column and commented about the last article I did about the Mojave Air Races. I...
