  • Tehachapi Idol Update!

    Aug 6, 2016

July 31 - It was another packed house at Big Papa's Steakhouse & Saloon. The friends and family of the performers filled every seat to witness the outcome of the evening performances. The theme of the songs were Country Music. The first to perform was Ashley. She sang Carrie Underwood's "Cowboy Casanova". What impressed me was when she walked among the audience singing to them on a personal level. She had complete confidence in her singing abilities, and it showed. Brinley came up and performed...

  • Yellow Starthistle

    Laurie Rude-Betts|Aug 6, 2016

If you have been a resident of the Tehachapi area for long, you hopefully know to keep your eye out in your yard for that nasty weed with the nice name, yellow starthistle (YST). This is the time of year when it becomes very visible as it begins to get a pretty yellow flower surrounded by some very wicked-looking needles, which neither humans nor animals would want to touch. This weed is particularly bad because it will overtake any area, as it can out-compete any grasses or other growth with it...

A recent news article (LA Times, July 29, 2016) stated that the State Water Resources Control Board has declared numerous California reservoirs and lakes as "mercury impaired" because they have sampled fish from those reservoirs with methylmercury levels exceeding 0.2 milligrams per kilogram of fish tissue (or 2 parts of mercury per ten million parts of fish tissue). Lake Sherwood had the highest level detected at 0.65 mg/kg. Already the SWRCB has placed 85 lakes and reservoirs on their 303(d)...

  • It's Too Hot

    Mark Fisher, Doc|Aug 6, 2016

So far 2016 is the warmest year on record, following 2015 which was previously the warmest year on record. Out there in Death Valley, they’re flirting with surpassing the world’s record temperature (134ºF from 1913), but it wasn’t that long ago that we were still getting glaciers forming in the Sierras. During the Little Ice Age, which lasted from the 1300s to the middle or end of the 1800s, the glaciers in the Sierra Nevada expanded and contracted with the temperatures. Those cooler temper...

  • Super Kid Music Show

    Tehachapi Life Photography|Aug 6, 2016

Nick and Jen brought their interactive Super Kid Music Show to the children of this town, and they rocked! Children listened intently to the stories of Nick and Jen, then got up and danced, crawled, slept, and laughed. They took these kids on a safari adventure, escaping crocodiles in the jungle, by using their imaginations. It was so good to see these boys and girls participate in such a positive event. They had such a fun time without the technology of our age. Kids were being kids. Also,...

  • Coriander or Cilantro?

    Edna McCallon|Aug 6, 2016

Coriandrum sativum is the mysterious plant that yields leaves called cilantro, and coriander seeds. These names are often used interchangeably causing much confusion. The roots like the other plant parts are edible and strong in flavor. This herb is irreplaceable in Indian, Asian, Chinese and Mexican cooking and it holds its own with the assertive tang of chili, garlic, onion, and other spices. It is often called Chinese or Mexican parsley. The leaf shape is similar but the flavor is sharper tha...

  • Chiropractic is Unique

    Terence G. Brady, Brady Chiropractic|Aug 6, 2016

Chiropractic is definitely unique. It is probably the only branch of the healing professions that treats the cause of your condition and not just the symptoms. Thomas Edison was quoted as saying. “The doctor of the future will give no medicine but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet and the cause and prevention of disease”. This quote from such a man as Thomas Edison is very meaningful for us as chiropractors because he seemed to tap into the basic philosophy of...
