A small group of interested locals hiked to a canyon on Bear Mountain recently to visit a rock art site whose location had been lost in the fog of time. Among the hikers was Fred Fickert, 75, who first discovered the artwork almost 60 years ago, when he was a 16-year-old on horseback gathering cattle on his family's ranch, which later became Bear Valley Springs. Back in 1966, all of Bear Valley and most of Bear Mountain were owned by the Fickert clan. The family first moved to Bear Valley in...

His book was published in 1967, when the Fickert family still owned Bear Valley. He was an amazing and inspiring man. Here are some excerpts from his book, which stands...

Sometimes I worry about world peace. I worry that no matter how noble a goal it is, it will never happen. I worry about this because of the constant reminders I see all around me that people can't get along in the smaller bits and pieces of life, never mind the larger picture (i.e. the whole world). And it seems to be getting worse these days as some people seem to be outright embracing and glorifying the ugly side of language and attitude and actions. So often, then, we seem to be living in a...

A gumshoe, a sleuthhound, a hawkshaw, a snoop are all nicknames for a private eye, an investigator usually hired by someone needing confidential information. What is a gumshoe? It originally was a name for a sneaky thief. It referred to the quiet rubber soled shoes a thief would wear so his steps were not heard as he snuck around in the dark.
