  • Massage: A healthy investment

    Dale La Vonne Martin|Aug 15, 2015

There was a time, long, long ago, when I thought that massage therapy was enjoyed only by a privileged few who had the money to waste on such a frivolous luxury. This was my attitude until I began having issues with my back, shoulders and started suffering from severe migraines. When conventional medicine had no practical answers in treating me, I turned to the world of natural health. Massage therapy was a form of body work that brought me great relief. I am the type of person that when I find a practical solution to a problem, I like to share...

  • Wait, I can't take your money!

    Tammy Engel, Mortgage Advisor|Aug 15, 2015

Frustration abounds in mortgage world these days. Closing times are longer, and more regulated wait times will be implemented in the next 60 days. Here’s a particularly sensitive spot that’s been a recent issue. The Mortgage Disclosure Information Act went into effect in 2009. Its purpose was to protect the mortgage consumer in four areas: Collection of up-front fees, formal definition of “business day”, timing of disclosures, and APR changes. Consumers cannot be charged anything more than a...

  • Meet your new neighbors

    Pat Doody, Welcome Hostess|Aug 15, 2015

John and Lynn Rastaetter had lived in Ojai, California, for 27 years. However, the beautiful little resort town near Ventura was becoming too crowded and too expensive. They had looked for a place to retire for five years before finally deciding on Tehachapi where they loved the seasonal weather changes and the open spaces. However, it wasn’t until this year when Lynn decided it was time to retire from her 26 year position of Administrative Assistant for the well-known Ojai Presbyterian C...

  • No secrets to investment success

Ben Graham, Edward jones Financial Advisor|Aug 15, 2015

This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor. Many people look for the “secrets” to investment success. Is it timing the market just right? Is it finding those hot stocks or getting in on the “ground floor” of the next big thing? Actually, these types of moves have little relevance to the vast majority of investors — even the most successful ones. So let’s take a look at some steps you can take that can be effective in helping you work toward...

  • The jury is out

    Mark Fisher, Doc|Aug 15, 2015

When you read this I will be coming up on my period of jury duty. It has actually been a couple of years since I’ve been called, but for a while I was getting called every year. Usually I would go and get put in a pool at the end of the afternoon, and I would have to come back the next day. Then, after being questioned, one or the other lawyer would reject me. Sometimes I would wonder why. Was it that I seemed to smart? I could tell myself so. One time I had a tenuous connection to the family of...

  • Music has charms to soothe

    Victoria Alwin, MSRD|Aug 15, 2015

The phrase that many of us have heard is that “music has charms to soothe the savage breast” (no, not “beast”). Over the past several decades there has been a multitude of studies on how various types of music can have beneficial health effects. Its importance to nutrition is twofold: first, many people use food to self-medicate for stress, anxiety, and pain; second, music can make exercise easier and more fun. Often people eat, not because they are hungry, but because they are using food to feel better. We have discussed before that sugar h...

Pet owners may purchase cones and additional vaccinations from the vet. There is...

  • Be the change

Liz R Kover, Animal Assisted Activities Director Marleys Mutts Dog Rescue|Aug 15, 2015

As a dog trainer, I find my job is both freshly challenging with each new case, and simultaneously, somewhat predictable. While each individual dog and dog guardian are unique and different, similar issues tend to arise in households across the board. Such as, Our dog goes crazy whenever anyone comes to the door, and won't stop barking and jumping! I believe what causes this kind of issue – and the remedy for fixing it – are two sides of the same coin: Individuals' behavior is, in part, the resu...

  • Lost, Windswept style

    Diana Frieling|Aug 15, 2015

It happens almost every Saturday: I get calls from people who are lost. They just can't find us. Most times, they just haven't traveled far enough south on Tehachapi Willow Springs Rd. But occasionally, they have made the mistake of putting the physical address in their GPS and found themselves in the middle of nowhere. While I acknowledge that we are in the middle of nowhere, we are not where your GPS takes you. In fact, when I think about it, we are centrally located just 18 miles from...

Put yourself in the lenders position, you want to borrow their money and they are in the business of lending money, so it should be easy right? Well, the first thing you need to realize is all loans start at no. It’s not that they don’t want to lend to you, they want to get paid back. If they give you a dollar, how will you repay that dollar with interest? If you have a p...

  • Have you been exposed to hackers?

    Greg Cunningham|Aug 15, 2015

Maybe you’ll sleep better not knowing… but if you want to be restless tonight, the New York Times has put together a site where you can see a list of companies from which criminals have stolen data. You don’t have to give the site any of your personal information, just push the buttons appropriate to where you might have an account, or have health insurance, or shop. Once you’re on the site, the list on the left shows you the number of times each type of information was exposed. It doesn’t...

  • Rosemary on my mind

    Edna McCallon|Aug 15, 2015

Shakespeare’s Ophelia tells us that “rosemary is for remembrance” and over time it has come to be known as such. It is given in the hope that you will be thought about or to signify that someone is on your mind. Did Ophelia mean remembrance or remembering? The ancient Greeks wore garlands of rosemary during exams to improve memory. It is being used today to improve the thinking process in Alzheimer patients. It appears that Ophelia’s meaning may have been misunderstood. Whatever the case, rosemary is a plant of worth! Rosmarinus officin...

  • Do your parents need long-term care insurance?

Jennifer Williams, President J. Williams Personal Financial Planning|Aug 15, 2015

We live in an age of medical miracles. People live longer than ever before, and life expectancies are increasing at a steady rate. This means that many of us will be fortunate enough to still have our parents with us as we ourselves reach retirement age. As our parents age, however, their health may decline, and the greater the chance becomes that they will require home care, nursing home care, or other assisted-living arrangements. Long-term care: The odds against it aren’t long at all Maybe y...

  • Wait, what? We're not married yet? (Affiliation talks not so urgent, no ballot in November)

Tina Fisher Cunningham, The Forde Files No 101|Aug 15, 2015

Due diligence for the proposed affiliation between the Tehachapi Valley Healthcare District and Adventist Health is proceeding – but without the urgency of impending financial disaster or a November ballot deadline. The district board of directors voted 4-0 on August 7 (President Mike Nixon absent) to table the matter of how to word a ballot measure on the affiliation proposal, thus foreclosing the opportunity to place it on the Nov. 3 ballot for voter approval. The board cited the need for m...

  • An old timer

    Pat Gracey|Aug 15, 2015

I have been an Old Timer for a good many years having passed the forty year requirement figure while I was still in my forties. It seems that the newly qualified folk sort of shy away from the Senior affair and they shouldn't. It's really a fun gathering and laughter abounds. It gives one a chance to see people who once lived here and were a part of our lives. I don't know how many towns or cities sponsor such an event but it certainly goes over big in Tehachapi. Recreation and Parks and the...
