  • Back to School

    Victoria Alwin, MSRD|Aug 16, 2014

Times sure are changing. I recently heard on the news that there was concern that the lunches that parents packed were less nutritious than the lunches that the children receive at school. Although many school districts might work hard to provide nutrition packed meals, other districts nationwide are providing Pizza Hut, McDonald’s, or meals made with foods prepared somewhere else, like the frozen convenience foods found in the freezer of your supermarket. These foods have a tendency to be high fat, high sodium and/or high sugar. Now we are b...

  • Lauraine Reads: Welcome to Last Chance

    Lauraine Snelling|Aug 16, 2014

This month my favorite household appliances are window fans. Since I live in an older house sans air conditioning, these fans are heaven sent. Add in an ice-filled bandana for my neck and a cool glass of iced tea and I’ll survive these hot summer days very nicely. For all of my complaining about the heat, my tomatoes simply love it and I do so delight in the longer summer evenings. Theoretically, summer is supposed to be a time of leisure with extra time for reading. I hope you are finding it so...

  • Sharing the Road:

Chief Michael J. Grant, Stallion Springs Police Department|Aug 16, 2014

“The motorist and the bicyclist should be friends, Oh, the motorist and the bicyclist should be friends, The vehicle code they must abide, no matter what they choose to ride, But that’s no reason why they can’t be friends.” For some, there is nothing finer than gearing up and going out for a bicycle ride through the Tehachapi area. Bicyclist and motorist have responsibilities that th...

  • Grow With Muroc

    Susan Wiggins|Aug 16, 2014

When I go through my mother Marion Deaver’s files, I never know what I am going to come up with. For instance, last week I was looking for some more information other than what I had so I could write a column on Tehachapi’s Mountain Festival. Instead I found an employment brochure for the Muroc Schools. There is no date on the brochure, but it says the district is unified, which happened in 1953, according to the current district webpage. As I have mentioned before my brother Mike rode the bus e...

If so, you would be classified as a Tehachapi Oldtimer. Don't worry, the term is a respected one and is shared by the three hundred plus Oldtimers that met for the annual Oldtimers Reunion this past Sunday, August 3rd at West Park Activity Center. Some of Tehachapi's longest-living citizens traveled to the event...

  • Tehachapi GranFondo Festival

    Shirley Given|Aug 16, 2014

A GranFondo is likened to one of those giant (serves 4-6) sundaes, offered in ice cream shoppes. To begin, the sundae glass is the incredible mountain scenery. To this, one would add several large scoops of ice cream or participants ranging from professionals to 80 year-old tourists. In lieu of hot fudge, pineapple and caramel toppings, you add mechanical and medical support, feeding and hydration stations and bring traffic to a screeching halt. Sprinkle with lots of enthusiasm and supportive...
