  • The perfect time to plant

Rick Gillies, Mountain Gardens Nursery & Pet, contributing writer|Aug 19, 2023

I just wanted to make people aware of some new and unusual plants that grow here in Tehachapi. It's always better to plant spring blooming plants in the fall or summer months. They get better established and you get the benefits of a longer bloom time! Let's start with trees Now's the time to plant Crepe Myrtle. There is a relatively new type out now, Delta Eclipse. It has purple foliage and pink flowers. We had it at Mountain Gardens Nursery & Pet all winter and it did great. Crepe Myrtles...

  • It's time to think about winterizing your cooler

    John Nelson, contributing writer|Aug 19, 2023

We know it's still hot out. We know we will have several more weeks of warm weather, but it's not too early to discuss winterizing your evaporative cooler (or what some people call a swamp cooler). You don't want to wait until the first cold snap to be winterizing the cooler as you might not be able to get an appointment or, worse yet, your water supply line could freeze and cause damage. Many property owners don't give a whole lot of thought to their cooler except when it isn't working, but...

  • Chalk on the Walk Best of Show

    Saya Novinger, contributing writer|Aug 19, 2023

I dedicate this artwork to the Nuwä (Kawaiisu or Southern Paiute) people of the Tehachapi Mountains who have lived here for thousands of years. "Nuwä Momo'o" (Nuwä Woman) depicts a Transitional Nuwä woman gathering Valley Oak acorns, for making acorn meal, on a beautiful late summer day with a cloudless Tehachapi sky. Her expression is peaceful and also confident, for she knows she will survive and adapt to any of life's challenges. She is holding what is called a "burden basket," a large con...

  • Why should probate be avoided? (part 2)

    Diana Wade, LDA|Aug 19, 2023

In the simplest cases, those in which there are no difficult creditor claims, disputes over ownership of assets or arguments against a will, probate often goes smoothly. It occurs in seven phases, and if there are no complications that require additional phases, the system proceeds as follows. 1. Locate the will. 2. Obtain certified copies of the death certificate. Banks and other institutions will want copies. 3. Probate administration requires filing a petition for probate, which usually...

  • Explaining conference realignment from the 'inside'

    Corey Costelloe, contributing writer|Aug 19, 2023

Most fans are simply perplexed about the stage of intercollegiate athletics now that the once proud "Conference of Champions" the Pac-12, has been gutted and reduced to four teams in 2024-25, thanks to the exits of most of their programs to other national conference over the last several weeks. As a former college athletics administrator, I can shed some light as to why this is all happening. It's a two-part answer: money and television. Streaming rights are important, but as the Pac-12 proved...

  • Do you need Gigabit internet service?

    Greg Cunningham, owner of Tech-hachapi|Aug 19, 2023

You can get a gigabit internet service package from Spectrum or Race to provide internet service at home or work. But do you need internet service that fast? We measure internet speeds in Mbps (megabits per second). 1 Mbps can transfer one million bits of data in a second, but that's not fast these days. So, a gigabit internet connection can deliver up to 1,000 megabits of data per second. Another way of looking at it is delivering a billion bits per second of internet goodness to your home or...

  • What is Power Training and why it matters

    Terry Delamater, RPh, contributing writer|Aug 19, 2023

The past couple of decades has seen a sharp increase in the amount of research focused on Power Training for older adults. But what exactly is Power Training? Simply put, power is equal to the amount of force and velocity. Starting around the age of 50, the human body begins to lose a very specific kind of muscle fiber. Muscle fibers are organized into two major categories: Type I and Type II. Type I fibers are slower contracting fibers, and Type II are faster contracting. Type I fibers...

  • The kid from Cooley

    Sheila Zanghi, contributing writer|Aug 19, 2023

Both of my grandkids are going to middle school this year and once I was over the shock, I remembered my first days at a junior high school. The first month I met a lot of new kids and became good friends with one girl especially. Her name of Linda and I thought she was amazing. The first day in English the teachers had her diagram sentences on the board. Diagramming had never come up in my 6th grade class, so she was awe-inspiring. Linda seemed so sophisticated to me because she listened to...

  • Rainy night

    Mel Makaw, contributing writer|Aug 19, 2023

I was thinking of writing something else this evening for my column, but a sudden and surprising rainstorm happened and that got the memory center in my brain working. I love thunderstorms; I think I always have. I don't ever remember being scared in one, but I do have lots of memories of enjoying them. Having grown up mostly in the Midwest, I had plenty of opportunities for stormy experiences. One memorable storm was in Chariton, Iowa, the summer I was 12. The thunder and lightning were simulta...
