A few weekends ago I attended the Tehachapi version of Relay for Life. This event is a coming together of many people, from all walks of life that are suffering from cancer, are recovering from cancer, getting treatment for cancer, or have a friend or family member that has cancer or has passed away because of cancer. As lay people, we could debate the causes and reasons for cancer for the rest of our days; however, that won’t magically bring cancer to its knees. What does help is money; and a...
Question: My battery in my minivan keeps going dead. I had it tested and it is fine – what could be the problem? Protech Auto Service Answer: Well, your problem could be caused by several things. Let’s start with a likely suspect: your alternator. The alternator is like a little electrical generator. It is spun by the serpentine belt on your engine and makes electricity. This electricity is used to power the important electrical systems required to run your minivan. It also powers all of your electronic accessories like your stereo, nav...
The Apple Festival was an incredible success last year, so its coming back and this year it will be even more apple-y. David Brust, the event organizer, announced that this year the festival will be a two-day event on October 11 and 12 from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. at Railroad Park and Robinson Street. Some of the things that you can expect are even more apple related items, including apple cider, apple drinks, more farmers with apples, and each vendor will have something apple-y. Besides the great...
Remember the fear you experienced watching Star Wars, when you first met Darth Vader – the heartless killing machine? Luke Skywalker was young and untrained, just naïve enough to not be daunted by the improbability of his success going up against vast imperial power. What a fool. Vader’s boss, the evil emperor, didn’t value human life only his ultimate power. Resistors and innocents were brutally killed. Fear and control was the religion of the empire. Into this violent world, a rag-tag bunch...
I can't tell you how many nights I spend here at the ranch sitting on the front deck and just stargazing. I am totally in awe of this world we live in. It makes me wonder what it was like before creation: When it was a blank canvas. Dark, I bet. And suddenly there was light. Every great painting and every great artist comes from that creation. Without it, nothing exists. I see the miracle of creation everyday here at the ranch. You only need to look at the animals to realize just how uniquely...

Another member, Jim Carmichael, began his interest in photography in...
On Friday, September 5, Fiddlers Crossing is bringing back one of the favorite performers from last year. Angelo M is an authentic voice of experience from the American Heartland, whether singing the blues or other styles of American "roots" music. Angelo M (short for Melasecca) was a hit with Tehachapi's audience because he is the real deal. Many performers can sing the blues, but this former steel worker has lived it. When the Pennsylvania steel mill where he had worked for nearly 30 years...

The Canine Creek staff spends countless hours each week taking lost/found pet reports, checking for microchips, searching for foster families for strays, taking phone calls and photos, and corresponding with Facebook fans of the Tehachapi Pet Network (TPN) page. Morning, noon and night, holidays, 7 days a week–the work just never ends trying to get local strays back home. They do it because we care about Tehachapi, but providing this community service is time consuming and costly. They began to wonder why don't people put tags on their pets? Be...
