    Kern County Public Health has received confirmation of the first West Nile virus (WNV) infection in a person in Kern County this year. WNV is a disease spread by mosquitoes most often during the summer and early fall when WNV-carrying mosquitoes are most active. While many mosquito-borne illnesses such as WNV cause only mild symptoms in most people, the infection can cause severe illness and even death in rare cases.     On Sept. 14, 1924, David Patton Grier was born to Joseph Grier and Florence Matilda Haken of Fort Macleod, Alberta, Canada. His father fought in World War I and brought his young bride home with him at the close of the war.     On Aug. 20 at approximately 1:55 p.m., the Tehachapi Police Department received a call for service from the Tehachapi Home Depot loss prevention, regarding two individuals they recognized as repeat retail theft offenders. Both suspects had previously been involved in multiple prior retail thefts, that had occurred in the Antelope Valley.     On Aug. 19, at approximately 10:14 p.m., the Tehachapi Police Department received a call for service regarding an individual under the influence of alcohol and marijuana in the 800 block of Tucker Road. Officers arrived and contacted Joseph Lopez, 35, of Golden Hills and Rachel Stillman, 23, of Tehachapi, in their vehicle.     The car pictured above is from a car club event awhile back at the Mojave Air and Space Port. The airport crew are pushing a 1980 European 308 GTS Ferrari.     In 1913, a funding bill was passed to build a road from Bakersfield to Mojave to replace the wagon and horse trails that, at the time, were the only way in and out of the Tehachapi Valley. In 1916, a 28.2 mile road was completed from Tehachapi to Mojave that opened the area up to better forms of transportation.
