  • The dangers of encountering elk

    Fiona Nelson|Sep 2, 2017

What do reindeer and elk have in common? Antlers. Impressively big antlers in some cases. Now, why in an article about elk, would I mention reindeer? The answer to that question is that it is to introduce the idea of how dangerous these animals can be. Reindeer are, generally, much smaller than elk and many are semi-domesticated. They are a huge part of the way of life of certain circumpolar peoples. Although semi-domesticated, and they are even milked in some cases, this does not mean that...

We're short and sweet this week, since something big is happening in the world of reverse mortgage. On Aug. 29, 2017 the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced changes to the Home Equity Conversion Mortgage program. This speaks to all federally-insured reverse mortgages, and is important because right now there is no other kind of reverse. Borrowers will see higher mortgage insurance premiums, and reduced reverse benefits, with case numbers issued on or after Oct. 2, 2017....

  • We all want to eat healthy. But what does that mean?

    Sep 2, 2017

For the owners of Taylor's Provisions that means non-processed, whole, plant foods; or, put another way, stuff from farms not factories. But like many places in America, that's easier said than done. "Our food system is set up to support Big Ag, not small farms," said store owner Scott Taylor. "And so we get more meat, more dairy, more corn, more salt, more sugar, and more processed foods. In fact, food can be food like beans, and grains, and fruit, and nuts, and seeds. Add a pinch of seasoning...

  • Henry's Home For Less closing

    Sep 2, 2017

Twenty-three years ago Henry Schaeffer opened the doors of Henry's Home for Less to help meet our small town's growing home improvement needs. A few years later he was joined by his son, Henry, and together they worked tirelessly serving their loyal customers and hunting down great deals to pass along to their patrons. Through the years the folks who walked through the door became so much more than customers, many of them became dear friends. The stories swapped while waiting for a gallon of...

  • Mojave Volunteer Fire Department

    Susan Wiggins, Mayor Pro Tempore|Sep 2, 2017

I get busy with my duties as the Mayor Pro Tem of Tehachapi and with everyday life and the next thing I know it is time for a column. I have known for a week that I had to write one, but then life happened, and I found myself scrambling for a topic. Mother's (Marion Deaver) files never fail to yield something and this time was no exception. I found a press release about the Mojave Volunteer Fire Department. This brought back all sorts of memories from my childhood growing up in Mojave. My dad Pa...

  • A checkmark on the bucket list

    Dale Hawkins|Sep 2, 2017

Seeing a total solar eclipse never was on my Bucket List. Yet, when I was twelve years old, I remember visiting a travel agent to discuss the possibility of attending such an event in Nova Scotia. The brochures I came away with fired my imagination for a very long time. I was therefore happy to add an eclipse to the bottom of the List when I discovered that the Great American Solar Eclipse was to pass directly over my mother's house in Chillicothe, Missouri. And so it came to pass last Monday....

The Christians were looking for a less hectic environment in which to raise their three children, 14 year old Sierra, 12 year o...

  • Passwords - the bad news and the good news

    Greg Cunningham|Sep 2, 2017

First, the bad news. Back in 2003, Bill Burr, a manager at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), wrote a paper about computer passwords that eventually became the password mess we find ourselves in today. Burr's eight-page password recommendation document, titled NIST Special Publication 800-63. Appendix A advised people to use irregular capitalization, special characters, and at least one numeral in their passwords. He was also the guy that suggested we change our...

Two beautiful domestic Pekin Ducks were abandoned at Cub Lake earlier this month. Your first thought might be what a beautiful duck home! Unfortunately, domesticated ducks cannot fly and have little ability to get away from predators. Also, domestic birds can carry diseases that the wild ducks may be vulnerable to, or vice-versa. These birds were rescued by Pacific Waterfowl Rescue (PWR) staff and transported to the rescue in Tehachapi Valley for rehabilitation and hopefully re-homing. If you...

  • Teakettle tea

    Pat Gracey|Sep 2, 2017

As children, my sister and I used to have tea parties. It was usually just the two of us but occasionally my brother, Buster Davis, four years my senior, would sometimes join us. His real name is Thomas but we called him Buster. A little Japanese- made tea set would be on our small table and my mother would fill our little tea pot with hot water from her teakettle. We put cream and sugar in our cups and then added the hot water. Voila! Teakettle Tea! Of course the one ingredient missing was...
