  • Hats warm newborns

    Phyllis Belcher|Sep 12, 2015

A team of knitters has been busy making baby hats to be given to newborns in Uganda, Peru, and elsewhere. In developing countries, babies are often of low birth weight and hats help to keep them warm. Nearly 80 hats have been completed and have been on display in the sanctuary of Tehachapi Community Congregational Church for the last few weeks. All those hats were knitted by a small group of members and friends including Catherine Smirnoff, Carol Kemmerer, Carolyn Scott, Dalton Steele Reed, Claudia White and Jan Combs. They enjoyed the...

Our seniors already knew her and she them, making the transition easier for everyone! Patty and her husband, Jim, have been residents in Tehachapi for 17 years moving here from the Antelope Valley. • Honor Flight with Mr. Blas Hernandez

    Katie Nowell|Sep 12, 2015

They are known as “The Greatest Generation” and on a recent trip to Washington DC with Kern County’s Honor Flight, I was able to discover firsthand how true this saying is. Honor Flight is a National non-profit organization that honors our veterans who served in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam by flying them to see the memorials built in their honor in Washington, DC. For a while now, I have been interested in this organization and as a prior member of the military (US Navy 2000-2004), a daughter of a Vietnam Navy Veteran (my dad served 1972-...

  • A Hero for All Time – Eddie Rickenbacker, World War I – Ace of Aces!

    Cathy Hansen|Sep 12, 2015

Thirty years ago, before computers, iPhones and Google, I was a stay at home Mom who enjoyed helping my two sons and their friends with school homework and special projects. Graduation time was approaching and some extra credit was needed for English for a couple of the kids and an essay on a historical person was needed by the next day! I loved research and history, so I assured them that this would be fun and easy! We all piled into the car and headed for the library. On the way, we were...

In the July 4 - 18, 2015, edition of The Loop I read two articles, one titled “Landscape Classes for Water Conservation,” by Tina Fisher Cunningham; the other titled “Landscapes for the Future,” by Liz Block. The articles focused on a series of classes to be taught by Ms. Block. Ms. Block is the Water Conservation Coordinator for the Tehachapi-Cummings County Water District. She offered a series of five classes/workshops regarding how to landscape with water conservation in mind. The five-week course was titled “Landscapes for the Future....

  • "Can we all just get along?"

    Diana Frieling|Sep 12, 2015

I am not sure how many of you remember when Rodney King said those famous words. It was a time of tremendous strife, just like today. Los Angeles had burst into flames and violence. Racial tensions were boiling over. Can’t stop thinking about how little has changed. Watching the news is, well, depressing. More hate. Blacks hate whites. Muslims hate Christians and Jews. ISIS seems to hate everyone. And the victims seem lost somewhere in all this: Children being washed up on shore after trying to escape persecution. People fighting over i...
