Traditionally the auction is a single day event, however this year virtual bidding allowed a longer...

  • The Daffodil Principle

    Mel White|Sep 12, 2020

Here's another one of those wonderful little tales that makes its way through the universe by email, word-of-mouth, and/or written copy. No one knows who wrote it, but it's worth passing on because it has a wonderful reminder for us all. Here you are, the story of the Daffodil Principle: Several times my daughter had telephoned to say, "Mother, you must come see the daffodils before they are over." I wanted to go, but it was a two-haour drive from my house to hers. "I will come next Tuesday," I...

  • Debit or credit? Pick a card

    Lance Patton|Sep 12, 2020

Americans use debit cards more often than credit cards, but they tend to use credit cards for higher-dollar transactions. The average value of a debit-card transaction in 2018 was just $36, while credit-card transactions averaged $89.1 This usage reflects fundamental differences between the two types of cards. A debit card acts like a plastic check and draws directly from your checking account, whereas a credit-card transaction is a loan that remains interest-free only if you pay your monthly...

Depending on the year of manufacture, a smog check is also required when a vehicle changes ownership or is registered for the first time in California. Remember to take the vehicle registration renewal form with you when going for a smog check. This helps ensure that the correct vehicle information and smog check certificate are electronically sent to the...

  • What is a naturalist? And why are there so many of them in the Tehachapi area?

    Jon Hammond|Sep 12, 2020

"I would propose that a naturalist is someone whose curiosity is boundless. He or she is interested in kinkajous and sticklebacks, in astronomy, French wine, magpies, baseball, prairie rattlesnakes, quantum mechanics, corn on the cob, great sperm whales, and even Bolsheviks and hummingbirds. A naturalist tries to delight in everything, is in love with the whole of life, and hopes to walk in harmony across this Earth." – John Treadwell Nichols I consider the above quote to be one of the best I h...

  • When horsepower was still supplied by horses

Jon Hammond, Land of Four Seasons|Sep 12, 2020

My grandfather, who was also named Lance Estes, owned freight wagons and teams of horses, and he used them to haul merchandise to general stores and trading posts in California. He sometimes had to travel across muddy plains, and oddly enough, it was easier to cross when the ground was thoroughly soaked rather than when it was only moderately wet, for when merely wet the adobe soil stuck to the wheels until they could no longer turn, and the mud could not be knocked off, but had to be cut off...

  • The remarkable Mrs. Katherine Curran Brandegee, botanist adventurer

Jon Hammond, Land of Four Seasons|Sep 12, 2020

In June 1884, Katherine Layne Curran (later Brandegee) travelled from Bakersfield to Mojave; the trip must have been one of the most successful brief trips in California botanical history. On this trip, in addition to much other material, Mrs. Curran collected the types for no fewer than 14 currently accepted taxa (species or subspecies)! This feat was even more remarkable when one considers that the month was June, not a particularly favorable one for collecting in the region, and that much col...

The same is true of your smart speakers, too. Here's how to remove your data from Amazon Echo and Google...

Medical News Today reports that the symptoms of COVID-19 may be more severe for breast cancer patients. Furthermore, the Centers for Disease Control and...

  • If you could be any person in the Bible, who would you want to be?

    Nancy Bacon, Reverend|Sep 12, 2020

My husband and I enjoy writing skits and watching people perform them at our church services in the park. During September and October we will be following the epic story of Moses and the Exodus, using a bit of humor along the way. Skits require people to play different roles, sometimes quite different from the ones we play in real life. Sometimes we are unaware of the roles we play in our real lives. As a Marriage and Family Therapist, I have studied roles within families. I've been fascinated...

  • Words

    Midge Lyndee, Book Review|Sep 12, 2020

In spite of dilemmas, conundrums, inquisitions and counteractions, school has been initiated. Did I manage a good use of my words? A nice variety, slightly challenging, apart from the usual? Put in plain words, school has started. A different kind of school for most, in front of a screen instead of the usual room of 30 or so desks, a screen with many bobbing heads in Zoom squares, double sets of eyes and ears, and voices that must listen and speak only in turn to escape chaos. Virtual school in...
