I lived in Ecuador during part of my childhood, since my father is Ecuadorian and he wanted my sister and I to experience that country. When I was four or five years old, I was visiting a waterfall near our house. Having a source of clean, fresh drinking water was a big deal, and the stream that fed the waterfall could be trusted, so I was carrying home some water jugs. While there, I caught a little frog that I wanted to bring home with me. My hands were already full, and I thought about...
In 1928, following his service in the U.S. Marines and before marriage would bring six children, a young Alvin Majors bought an Indian Scout motorcycle. He paid $300 for the new Massachusetts-made vehicle, which served a dual purpose – to ride in hill-climbing competitions and as transportation to his job at various Los Angeles Department of Water and Power locations. He also used the motorcycle on the job to patrol the Los Angeles Aqueduct in the Antelope Valley and points east. Majors became R...

We’ve all had family or friends in a nursing home and for some people it’s a wonderful experience with friends, activities and plenty to do. For many veterans in V.A. Nursing Homes it can be a tough road to hoe. Many of our Veterans are alone and have very little contact with the outside world. In many cases family, if there is any left, are far away and the vet is out of sight and out of mind. Project D.E.F.T. was designed to help fill that void by providing our veterans with a Christmas car...

(Once again, especially for S. and E., with love.) TV ads say, "It's amazing what happens when you quit smoking," and the pictures are of people smiling and enjoying the good life. As if quitting smoking makes everything better – amazingly so! – the very moment you snub out your last butt. I kicked the habit 16 years ago, and I can tell you it was amazing – it was amazing to me how hellish it was at the time. I finished my last cigarette at 3:32 p.m. on December 23, 1993 (ex-smokers remem...

On Aug. 27, the Board of Supervisors adopted our final 2019-2020 Fiscal Year Budget, and I'm extremely pleased that this budget will completely close the General Fund deficit of $44.5 million that was identified four years ago. This large deficit was caused by a significant drop in oil prices over two years and steep increases in employee pension costs (70%) over the last ten years. It took a lot of hard work from county employees and department heads to get there, but our four-year mitigation...
