Anyone who reads this column probably understands my love of music. Whether the quiet hum of a dulcimer or music that just feels right in the moment, music has always deeply touched me. It's no wonder my kids have (in my opinion at least) excellent taste in music, not to mention an exceptional appreciation of music. I have to say I am quite proud that both my 8-year-old and my 2-year-old quickly identify a wide-variety of genres and musicians when they pop up in the shuffle of my iPhone. Lady...
Michael and Michelle Wedekind arrived from Okinawa, Japan in August just in time for Michael to begin his job as a procurement specialist at Edwards Air Force Base. They had lived in Okinawa for about five years while he was working for the Department of Defense. By the end of August, their furniture still had not arrived and they were sleeping on a huge air mattress in the middle of the living room floor with no idea when to expect their belongings. Michelle said that they really hated to...
Addiction. There, I said it. People, Americans in this case, are addicted to their smartphones. Not you and me, though; we're fine. Other people, probably someone we know, is addicted. Public hearings for draft environmental report due summer 2019 Piece by piece, elements of the massive California High-Speed Rail (HSR) project are falling into place as planners move ahead like the tenacious tortoise who prevailed over the overconfident and dismissive hare. In this case, the hare is the portion of the population of California whose favorite word for the project is "boondoggle." The tortoise keeps moving steadily ahead. "There are 120 miles [of track] under construction and 21...

The new campus - located on the grounds of Camp Arroyo Grande - is named KEEP By The Sea and complements the program's KEEP Ocean campus in nearby Montano de Oro State Park. Thanks to a robust economy, a business-friendly climate and the desirability of Tehachapi, our Downtown is operating at full strength. Buildings that sat vacant due to a variety of factors will be unoccupied no more. The old Ace Hardware building at 228 Tehachapi Blvd. is currently being renovated to serve as company headquarters for World Wind and Solar. The design is impressive and will offer a welcome gateway to Downtown. Meanwhile across the street, the former lumber shed and bulk yard is...
The year was 1936. Green Street had just been paved for the first time. We had 15.68 inches of rain that year. Franklin Roosevelt had defeated Alf Landon and was serving his second term as president. The favorite songs being sung and played at the Saturday night dances might be "Pennies from Heaven" or "The Music Goes Round and Round." "Flat Foot Floogie" was one of those nonsense songs being sung that year. A decade later some may remember another such song, "Mairsy Doats," in the 40s. I used...
Every year the Kern County Libraries recommend one book for all residents to read and discuss around the county. This year’s recommended book is “Incarceration Nations” by Baz Dreisinger. Given the number of prisons in Kern County, the way that incarceration affects societies and the questionable effectiveness of “rehabilitation,” this book is well chosen for discussion. Dreisinger’s writes from her experiences as a teacher and as the founding director of the Prison-to-College Pipeline pr...

Do you know the feeling of meeting a person and instantly there seems to be a connection? That often happens to me when meeting folks from the aviation community. In 2005, at the Aerospace Walk of Honor in Lancaster, we displayed our UH-1H helicopter and also attended the black tie banquet held that evening. Five test pilots are honored each year and the 2005 honorees included: Major General Wilbert D. Pearson, USAF; NASA Research Test Pilot Edward T. Schneider; F-5F Chief Project Test Pilot,...
Kern County Budget Update This week, the Board of Supervisors passed the county's budget for the 2018-19 fiscal year. We are in year three of our four-year plan to eliminate the General Fund structural deficit, after several years of falling oil prices and rising employee benefit costs. All county departments, except for Kern County Fire, have endured cuts during our four-year plan, but the Board and I have asked your county government to maintain service levels despite these cuts. The efforts...
Picture a grandmother who could cure thrush in babies by breathing into their mouths, a cousin who was struck twice by lightning and survived, a grandfather who was shot down on the road to his home, an aunt who left the life of a miner's wife to become a movie star and a grandmother who spoke to a mysterious man named Charlie through a plastic banana. These are the ancestors of Appalachian singer Jeni (Smith) Hankins, who will be sharing her rich, poetic background at Fiddlers Crossing for the...
