Among the most interesting insects to be found in the Tehachapi Mountains, or anywhere for that matter, are the translucent-winged dragonflies. Since dragonflies always lay their eggs in or near water, aquatic habitats are necessary for dragonflies. The dry Inland Ranges of California are not known for their abundance of aquatic habitats, of course, but dragonflies can often utilize small ponds, pools, seeps, etc. You can also find some adults quite a distance from any surface water. The...

Neil applied for a transfer to Edwards AFB so the couple could move closer to...

Kern County’s COVID-19 death data is updated when sufficient data accumulates to prevent identification of the deceased. While this data is a tool to help our community better understand the impacts of this disease, it is our responsibility to adhere to HIPAA guidelines and ensure patient privacy. COVID-19 death data is reviewed biweekly to determine if we have met the criteria set forth by our HIPAA statistician to release more information related to these deaths. Our last update to local death data occurred on April 20, 2021. As of S...

To help find loving homes for pets, Assemblyman Vince Fong will cover the costs for the first 100 pet adoptions at Kern County Animal Services during the month of October. Originally scheduled for September 16-18, Fong's Third Annual Free Pet changed to October 4 to promote the adoption of dogs from local shelters. We have put out many articles about what we do, and we know many of you out there personally. You come into our shop, have adopted pets from us, have brought us little lost foundlings, and, most importantly, have had your family pets spayed and neutered at one of our clinics in the past. We usually spend at least one paragraph in our articles begging for help, asking for volunteers to spend a bit of their free time to further our cause and to add helping hands to lighten the load. Due to what...
A trust will streamline the process of transferring an estate after you die while avoiding a lengthy and potentially costly period of probate (in California if you have assets like a house, and it is worth more than $166,000, there will be a probate in most circumstances). However, if you have minor children, creating a will that names a guardian is critical to protecting both the minors and any inheritance. Deciding between a will or a trust is a personal choice, and some experts recommend...

Thanks to a high school friend of mine I received a valuable piece of history in the mail the other day, it was one of the final newspapers that I produced at Tehachapi High School as the Managing Editor of The Warrior newspaper. More importantly it included a set of photos I took from a church trip to Mexicali, Mexico in the spring of 1998. I remembered the photos vividly, it was decent artistic work but in the world before digital cameras, cell phone pictures and memory cards, I had no idea...
Nearly three months after the constitutional deadline to pass the state budget, the Governor and the Democrat controlled Legislature passed its fifth and final budget of the year. Assemblyman Vince Fong (R-Kern County), Vice Chair of the Assembly Budget Committee, issued the following statement: "This budget does nothing to fund new water storage. Nor does it do much to strengthen the conveyance infrastructure needed to deliver the limited available water. "Not only is the state refusing to inve...
Could it be a true statement, that the stars are not for man? Man has reached into the stars, reached the moon personally and propelled himself in unmanned vehicles to Mars and Jupiter and beyond. We grew up watching Star Trek, and it certainly promoted man exploring space in every possible way that can be imagined. What is infinity? Is space an infinity or does it have an end? Should we pursue to the very limits of our abilities and then push even further? Reading “Childhood’s End” by Sir A...
My family, the Freemans, arrived in the Tehachapi Valley 140 years ago when my grandparents, Farmer and Susan Freeman, moved from Havilah to Tehachapi in the 1870s. The Freemans ran a small dairy located on Green Street, about where the former St. Vincent De Paul Thrift Store (and before that, Town and Country Market) was located. My grandmother would turn her cows loose after the morning milking, and they would wander down the canyon by the railroad tracks and eat the meadow grass. It used to b...
Given the latest COVID-19 Mega Event restrictions and mandates issued by Los Angeles County on September 15, the 2021 Antelope Valley (AV) Fair scheduled to start October 1 is officially canceled. Due to the logistics and complexities of the new mandates including requiring proof of vaccinations or proof of negative COVID-19 testing and other protocol requirements have increased logistical burdens beyond reason. Coupled with the continued uncertainty of additional event regulations and the fiduciary risk to future events, cancellation is the...
On September 9, Assembly Bill 3, authored by Assemblyman Vince Fong (R-Kern County), cleared the California State Legislature unanimously and is now headed to the Governor's desk for final approval. "Illegal street racing and sideshows wreak havoc in our communities, draw permanent damage to our roads, and claim innocent lives,"...
