  • Nope, that won't help your score

    Tammy Engel, Mortgage Advisor|Sep 26, 2015

A new survey conducted by TransUnion indicated that home buyers may not be as prepared to purchase a home as they thought. The survey revealed that those looking to buy a home within the next 12 to 18 months are not cognizant of the actions that could help improve their credit score, and the majority of respondents did not understand how their credit score affects their ability to obtain home financing. The survey found that almost 75 percent of potential home buyers believe it’s important to c...

  • Medical Identity Theft: Most dangerous of all

    Matthew Rice|Sep 26, 2015

Your medical identity is your most complete and most valuable identity. Your medical identity has far more uses than any other identity and that makes your medical identity worth more money to a thief, than a credit card. A single medical identity is like a credit card with a $Million credit limit. Medical identity has become the thieves ID of choice! Medical identity theft can cost you literally everything. When you create your “medical” identity, your doctor or hospital will ask for specific information from you. That information will usu...

Liz R. Kover, Animal Assisted Activities Director Marleys Mutts Dog Rescue|Sep 26, 2015

Greetings, Mutt Fans! In this month's article, I get to make a very special announcement, geared especially to Marley's Mutts' oldest and dearest friends and supporters in Tehachapi and Bear Valley. Our successful canine-assisted reading program, Barks & Books, has come to the Tehachapi Library! Our program of the same name, which we've run at Beale Library in Bakersfield for almost two years, has been a huge success! Every second and fourth Wednesday of the month, kids come to Beale to snuggle...

  • Meet your new neighbors

    Pat Doody, Welcome Hostess|Sep 26, 2015

It was his work as an aircraft mechanic that brought TJ Fargo, his wife Roni, and their three children, aged nine months to fourteen years, to the Antelope Valley from Vacaville, California. They lived in Littlerock for less than a year before the lure of the mountains, the change of seasons, and friends in Stallion Springs prompted them to make the move to the Bear Valley area of Tehachapi. According to Roni, since they made the move they have had company almost every weekend. That’s what h...

  • Ruthie's gift

    Adam Bailey|Sep 26, 2015

I was never a "dog person" growing up. We always had cats. Dogs avoided me, and I avoided them. It wasn't a big deal I just didn't "get" dogs, or so I thought. That all changed when I met Ruthie in 2011. I was 42 years old and she was 12. We became fast friends. She was only in my life for a couple of years but we bonded pretty quickly. It was a moment I'll never forget. I was reading a book to her. Well, I wasn't reading to her, but she would lay next to me while I'd read my stories and one...

  • How to successfully start a small business

    Jay Thompson|Sep 26, 2015

For years it has been said that a small business is just a smaller version of a big business. We now know this is not completely true. Though there are some similarities, there are many more differences between the two. As an entrepreneur it is all up to you. In the beginning, everything rises and falls upon your actions and quite often this occurs on a daily basis. As time goes on you will gain strength and stability. You will build your team or network and things will eventually start to even...

  • A work of art

    Pat Gracey|Sep 26, 2015

Works of art are to be appreciated. I often look at paintings, quilts, ceramics and any attractive work that has been labored over and finished to perfection. It is a pleasure to admire such efforts and appreciate them. I say this because now, as I drive down Woodford-Tehachapi Road, I cannot help but admire the fine paving job that has just been completed. Mostly though, I had to admire the lines painted to show us "our side" of the road and the turn off sections. They are so mathematically...

  • An El Nino Winter

Liz Block, Water Conservation Coordinator, Tehachapi-Cummings County Water District|Sep 26, 2015

Meteorologists at NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association) have stated they are 95% sure we will have an El Nino winter. We can expect abundant rain and snow, flooding and mudslides. Batten down the hatches! Will this “fix” the drought? Can we go back to normal now? Sorry, but no. After four years of drought, the moisture in the deeper soils and the groundwater stores have been deeply depleted. It will take several years of wet or at least normal weather to replace this water. That’s a fairly big picture view of our situation, but t...

  • The Internet, privacy, and you

    Greg Cunningham|Sep 26, 2015

Advertisers and social media companies and others are paying for the ‘free’ Internet by tracking which sites we visit, what we search for, how long we stay on a site, what pages we look at, where we live, who our friends are, and more. How can a normal person maintain any privacy on the Internet? Here are some things you can do. 1) If you don’t want your Internet searches tracked and later influencing the ads you’ll see on the rest of the web sites you visit, consider using DuckDuckGo or IXSt...

  • Chiropractic is unique

    Terence G. Brady, Brady Chiropractic|Sep 26, 2015

Chiropractic is definitely unique. It is probably the only branch of the healing professions that treats the cause of your condition and not just the symptoms. Thomas Edison was quoted as saying. “The doctor of the future will give no medicine but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet and the cause and prevention of disease”. This quote from such a man as Thomas Edison is very meaningful for us as chiropractors because he seemed to tap into the basic philosophy of ch...

  • Welcome Pope Francis!

    Nancy Bacon, Reverend|Sep 26, 2015

I’m thrilled that I get to be with a group of interfaith leaders heading to Philadelphia for Pope Francis’ visit. God is good. I love Steven Colbert’s nickname for the Holy Father, “Pope Hope.” That is also how I see him. He is an inspiring leader who demonstrates walking-the-talk of his faith. I love reading about his choices to forego many standard papal perks. His well-worn black shoes are a comfort to my heart. He walks with common people and people who suffer or are forgotten, as Jesus onc...

  • Occultations, conjunctions, eclipses, oh my!

    Dale Hawkins|Sep 26, 2015

8 has certainly been a year for celestial alignments! As we go to press, there will be a total lunar eclipse tomorrow (September 27th), which I told you about last month. In brief, the sun will set at 6:44 with the moon rising already in partial eclipse. Totality begins at 7:11 and ends at 8:23 p.m. This will be the fattest eclipsed moon we will ever see, because the moon will be at the closest point in its orbit (perigee). Tehachapi already enjoyed a total lunar eclipse last April, plus two...

  • Health Fair advantage

    Victoria Alwin, MSRD|Sep 26, 2015

On Saturday, Oct. 3, Tehachapi Valley Healthcare District will be holding its annual Health Fair. I have been working at these fairs for the last 4-5 years. I have watched folks pass by the various booths: some actively taking part in what’s offered and others just picking up whatever literature or goodies are available. While I normally write about all things nutrition and exercise based, dietitians are also concerned with everything dealing with a person’s overall health. Health Fairs are great opportunities to speak to the experts inv...

  • Six common 401(k) plan misconceptions

Jennifer Williams, President J. Williams Personal Financial Planning|Sep 26, 2015

Do you really know as much as you think you do about your 401(k) plan? Let’s find out. 1. If I leave my job, my entire 401(k) account is mine to keep. This may or may not be true, depending on your plan’s “vesting schedule.” Your own contributions to the plan--that is, your pretax or Roth contributions--are always yours to keep. While some plans provide that employer contributions are also fully vested (i.e., owned by you) immediately, other plans may require that you have up to six years of ser...

  • Rotary Club of Tehachapi welcomes new members

    Linda Carhart|Sep 26, 2015

The Rotary Club of Tehachapi has been busy welcoming new members which are pictured here. It is our privilege to serve the community in a variety of ways. One of the many projects we do locally is replacing smoke alarm batteries for seniors the week after the clocks change on Nov. 14. In December we do our Senior Holiday luncheon and we work with Kiwanis and The Salvation Army to serve families a pancake breakfast and pictures with Santa. We send ten high school students to leadership camp,...
