In the mental health field there are dozens of avenues, or modalities, that can be used to help client's with their needs. They can be broken down into two categories, evidence based practices and non-evidence based practices. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Internal Systems and Motivational Interviewing are just a few of a long list of evidence based practices. At...

I hope by now you all understand when it comes to athletics my feeling is that while the pros are entertaining and add value to society, the true value of competition is found in our kids. Athletics lays the foundation and teaches hard life lessons that more often than not are no longer taught in the classroom or life in general. My passion for sports centers on the youth, and helping them with that same foundation that I benefitted from; the foundation that helped launch a successful career. I...
Steering is one of the things we take for granted in our vehicles. Let’s break it down into two areas: first, the power assist and second, the actual parts that steer the vehicle. Most people under 40 have never driven a car or truck without power steering. Most vehicles today have a hydraulic power steering pump that provides boost to help you steer. The pump is usually driven by the serpentine belt, but some newer vehicles have an electric pump. Some vehicles even have an electric motor t...

"I'm excited not just for my customers but for myself as well," said owner, Sarah Rose. "You can bet that I will be attending as many classes as possible!" The president signed the Inflation Reduction Act into law on Aug. 16. It contains some valuable tax credits for homeowners. When it comes to taxes, nothing is better than a tax credit since it is a dollar-for-dollar reduction in the taxes you must pay (unlike a tax deduction that only reduces your taxable income). In other words, a $1,000 credit saves you $1,000 in taxes. The new law extends and expands three tax credits intended to encourage homeowners to make their homes more energy efficient...
In any lake, reservoir or pond where water stands year-round in the Tehachapi Mountains, or this part of California in general, sooner or later there will appear a plant that is important to waterfowl and other aquatic species and was of great significance to Native people: the tule, also known as Hardstem Bulrush (Schoenoplectus acutus). Tules are a type of giant sedge that is found in marshlands all over the West. The long round stems are dark green and grow from three to ten feet tall, with...
With Homecoming this past week at Tehachapi High, it's a good time to remember lifelong Tehachapi resident Terry Edwards, who earned the title "Warrior of the Century" and the "Ultimate Warrior" after he achieved a milestone that will likely never be equaled by anyone else: he attended 413 Warrior football games in a row without missing a single one for more than 30 years, from 1980 until he passed away at the age of 80 in 2014. Terry's incredible streak of Warrior fandom began with a game...
There are no shortcuts to investment success – you need to establish a long-term strategy and stick with it. This means that you'll want to create an investment mix based on your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon – and then regularly review this mix to ensure it's still meeting your needs. In fact, investing for the long term doesn't necessarily mean you should lock your investments in forever. Throughout your life, you'll likely need to make some changes. Of course, everyone's sit...
Fall tours at Tehachapi Native American Village Site California State Parks is currently taking reservations for the fall tour season at Tomo-Kahni State Historic Park in Tehachapi, beginning this Saturday! Park visitation is only allowed on authorized guided tours, which involve a moderately strenuous 3-mile hike. Although no structures remain on this Kawaiisu (Nüwa) Native American village site, the area’s rich history comes alive through the trained volunteer tour guides and the clues that the inhabitants left behind. Tomo Kahni means “w...
On Saturday, Sept. 10, the Freshman Tehachapi Tomahawks won their first game of the season against Central. Both teams played a great game with the Tomahawks coming up with the win, with a final score of 36-12. This victory was hugely in part due to our son, #21 Stylz Davis. Stylz is 8 years old and is a second-year player for the Tomahawks. Stylz plays as a Running back on Offence and Defensive End on Defense. Stylz loves football and he is an amazing player. Even knowing how good he is, we...
What activities did you use to wile away the long days of pandemic seclusion? I heard about a lot of bread making. Families dusted off board games and caught up on G-rated movies. Some people indulged in binge watching cable series they hadn’t had time for during busier schedules. Others got out their knitting needles and finally used their accumulated yarn stashes, making stacks of sweaters for their families, friends, pets and strangers. For singles, books were taken from the “someday I will r...

This is not an obituary but a story of a life well lived. At just two days before turning 101, my mom, Evelyn Dignam decided she was ready to leave this earthly plain. Her life, like so many, was full of ups and downs. She lived through the depression. Her childhood was not always a happy one, so much so, that she would rarely talk about it. Evelyn was a fighter and tried not to let things get her down. She married William Dignam from Bay Ridge Brooklyn in 1942. They loved and supported six...
For the past six or seven years dance aerobics at the Whiting Center has been led by a spirited lady, Teresa Scognamillo. A close-knit group of women have enjoyed the class over the years and had many laughs together, as well as tear of grief on occasion. Now, Teresa is leaving and moving back to her home state of North Carolina to be closer to her ailing mother and her passel of sisters. Her class wishes her well on her new adventure, and will miss her enjoyable classes. Happy trails, Teresa....
Friendly advice, you may not want to speed in Bakersfield for a few months. The long running reality TV show "COPS" will be filming in Kern County. Film crews will be embedded with the Kern County Sheriff's Department. While the Kern County Sheriff's Department provides service to much of the unincorporated areas like Mojave, Rosamond, Sand Canyon and Golden Hills, the "COPS" TV show will not be filming there. Instead, they will be filming the show in the Bakersfield metro area. The partnership...

I had such a great time on a Sunday drive a few weeks ago that I decided to take another similar one last week. This time I took a different route to the Lake Isabella area – up and back down the canyon – specifically with the idea of visiting the Silver City Ghost Town in Bodfish. And once again, the drive was just as entertaining as the destination. I headed out of Tehachapi on the 58 and took the Comanche exit, turning north toward the 178. A few miles later I turned right onto the 178, follo...

In a special meeting held on Sept. 21, the Tehachapi City Council voted unanimously to award the contract for the Dennison Water Main Project to California Compaction Company, who submitted the low bid of $649,486.57. According to Andrew Norton from Public Works, the bid was actually under the estimated cost for the project. The projected plan is to replace a .50 mile of 14 inch diameter pipe and ductile fittings, tie-in connections to existing water lines, as well as the removal of the...
The Apple Festival is excited to partner with the Make-A-Wish® Northeastern/Central California and Northern Nevada Chapter to grant the South Valley Region's 1,000th wish. The fun begins at 10 a.m. and we highly encourage the community to come out in support of a fabulous 11-year-old who turned 11 on the 11th of October and was born in 2011. This is his wis...
