  • Harvest activities at Triassic

    MK Waiss|Oct 10, 2015

It should be no surprise that the harvest moon shone down as the first Triassic crop of 2015 (Viognier) began its journey from vine to bottle the last weekend of September. The earliest members of the harvesting crew started at 7 p.m. Saturday and continued at 5:30 a.m. Sunday, using headlamps to augment the moon's glow while they removed the netting in anticipation of the arrival of the pickers. This is the first year that Triassic has used the netting to prevent extensive damage from the...

Susan Showler had moved from Minnesota to Valencia, California in 2014, but she loved the mountains of Tehachapi and the change of the seasons so in the spring of this year, she packed up and moved to Tehachapi. She said that the mountains here are “crazy beautiful”. Susan came to California as a contractor in marketing, communications and graphic design for Donaldson, a global industrial filter manufacturer; a job that she was able to bring with her from Minnesota. However, after her move to...

  • Tiny loans making a world of difference

    Nancy Bacon, Reverend|Oct 10, 2015

I have three new friends from Armenia, Haiti, and Uganda that I am invested in. They don’t know me, but through Kiva’s micro-lending program, I have fronted each of them $25 to assist their small businesses and to move them out of extreme poverty. There’s a taxi driver in Armenia, whose only possession is his broken taxi, so getting it running again is critical for his livelihood. A young mother in Haiti, has a small business of selling soft drinks and snacks to beach sunbathers. She needs...

  • Got green?

Liz Block, Water Conservation Coordinator, Tehachapi-Cummings County Water District|Oct 10, 2015

I was at a home earlier this week doing a consultation for the homeowner who wanted to remove some lawn and take advantage of the turf removal rebate. Her lawn looked really healthy – and she only watered once a week. I hope one thing we are learning from this drought is that lawns DO NOT need to be watered every day. That’s just plain wasteful (not to mention against the drought emergency regulations). We know with scientific accuracy how much water fescue lawn needs. A watering schedule to keep your lawn healthy would look like this: • Once...

This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor. What’s the biggest obstacle to your ability to invest successfully? Is it the ups and downs of the financial markets? Political events? The fact that you weren’t born rich? Actually, the chief hurdle you face is something over which you have control: your own emotions. Your emotions can lead to a variety of ill-advised investment behaviors, such as these: • Cutting losses – Declines in the financi...

    Oct 10, 2015

How do I tell if it’s a fake tech support or printer driver site? Here’s the best way to tell: If you’re looking for something from Dell or HP or anyone else, their company name will show up in the link BEFORE whatever you’re looking for. For example support.hp.com or www.dell.com/support. The fake sites will have what you’re looking for AFTER their site name. Examples of this look like gethuman.com/phone-number/Dell-Tech-Support or iprint.io/hp-officejet How do I tell if a viral video, Facebook post, or image on social media is true? The...

  • Fall tours begin at Tehachapi's Native American village site

    Jean Rhyne|Oct 10, 2015

California State Parks is beginning the fall tour season at Tomo-Kahni State Historic Park in Tehachapi. Although no structures remain on this Kawaiisu Native American village site, the area's rich history comes alive through the trained volunteer tour guides and the clues that the inhabitants left behind. Tomo Kahni means "winter home" in Kawaiisu, and rock rings mark the locations of many of the kahni, or homes, that were built of juniper boughs. Hundreds of mortar holes in the park tell of a...

  • Financial statements

    Jay Thompson|Oct 10, 2015

It often amazes me how many small business owners cannot read their own company financial statements. You do not need a Ph.D. in accounting to successfully operate a small business but any business owner who wants to grow their business should, at least, have a basic understanding. There are two basic Financial Statements that you need to be familiar with, the Balance Sheet, and the Profit & Loss Statement or P & L. Balance Sheet In school, you got a report card grading your performance. In...

  • Whitehouse cookbook

    Susan Wiggins, Mayor|Oct 10, 2015

Recently I noted that I have been unable to locate my mother’s original copy of the White House Cookbook, originally published in 1887. My mother’s version was revised in 1900, according to documentation she had received about it. But…I couldn’t find it anywhere. I went to my Brother Bill Deaver’s house and went through some of his boxes of “stuff” to no avail. In the meantime I ordered a reprint of the book from Amazon and thought that way at least I could write about it. (not cheap, either...

  • Year-end investment decisions

Jennifer Williams, President J. Williams Personal Financial Planning|Oct 10, 2015

What are year-end investment decisions? Year-end investment decisions may sometimes result in substantial tax savings. Tax planning may allow you to control the timing and method by which you report your income and claim your deductions and credits. The basic strategy for year-end planning is both to time your income so that it will be taxed at a lower rate, and to time your deductible expenses so that they may be claimed in years when you are in a higher tax bracket. In terms of investment...

  • Pineapple sage is for the birds!

    Edna McCallon|Oct 10, 2015

This herb is definitely for hummingbirds, but bird watchers as well as gardeners seeking brilliant fall color and a delectable pineapple scent will enjoy it too. Pineapple sage (salvia elegans) fills so many "bills" that it is a must in every garden. It was formerly called salvia rutilans so either botanical name will suffice when you purchase a plant. It is rarely grown from seed but tip cuttings taken in spring are easy to start. Grow it in an area where it will get morning sun. Provide good...
