This restored Mosquito DH.98 was essentially built around the data plate by Glyn Powell and Mike Tunnicliff who run Mosquito Aircraft Restoration in Drury, Auckland. The first flight was Sept. 28, 2012 My dear Mother had a saying that has been with me for years – "Where there's a will – there's a way!" Glyn Powell must have lived by this saying. The plane came to New Zealand seven years earlier, after being pulled from a Russian swamp. The Canadian-built Mosquito KA114 was owned by American war...

Fiddlers Crossing’s next concert will be in keeping with the season when award-winning singer-songwriter Brad Cole performs Oct. 23, at 7p.m. The songs of Brad Cole address the ups and downs of the human condition with both wit and raw insight. His passionate and distinctive delivery of roots-based folk music, woven with the grit and groove of old school r&b, moves audiences in a way that is unexpected, yet at the same time familiar. Cole has released a music video called, “I Got a Job at the Church,” that paints a compelling portrait of a man...

It was a pleasant evening of education and discussion....

Walking up Green Street in downtown Tehachapi after work, I glanced up and to see a multitude of soaring turkey vultures in the evening sky. Circling, sweeping, swaying in the updrafts, a tilt of the wings with an occasional flap as they sought to roost for the evening. Always a joy to see, we know there are some of our readers who don’t know why these wonderful creatures are traveling through the area. The following is reprinted from Kern Audubon’s website at kern.audubon.org/tvfest.htm: These birds travel up to 200 miles per day, so they des...

Some days ago the Californian featured an article about the old Ridge Route Highway that took one from the San Joaquin Valley to the L.A. area. In 1988 I had written an article about an old hotel, The Lebec Hotel, which was a rather famous and beautiful stopping place. I had visions of pulling an old article out of my files and quickly copying a vintage story I had written about the old lodging place. It’s harder to rewrite than it is to write and I spent hours revising my own copy. The Lebec H...
For some of us, any time we exercise it has to be accident, because we definitely wouldn’t do it on purpose! Contrary to this thought, is the actual concept called “accidental exercise.” I heard about this on a news program and found it interesting. Bottom line: our modern conveniences and step-saving mindset are literally adding to our bottoms and lines. Think about it: Obesity has always been with us, but not to the current extent. Many of our grandparents and great grandparents might have been heavy, but it was more due to cooking and eatin...
September 2014 Cycling, whatever. So, I can ride a bike and no big deal. It was running that I really loved. The pounding of my shoes on the pavement and the endorphins that many just don't understand. But sadly lower back issues ended my running so I needed a new exercise gig. With all the fondue, fundo, fondo hype, I became interested. I've been on biking vacations and the routes are scenic and adventurous especially the self guided trips. They say it's all about the journey and not the destin...

It was really bright this night and I had to stop and take a photo. I keep my camera with me in my truck most of the time that way I don’t miss unexpected mom...

Another season of tours is coming to an end and I can’t believe how fast it has gone by. We are always so excited when the season begins, but by the end, I think all of us breathe a sigh of relief. We try every year to add something to make it more enjoyable for visitors. This year, it was camel rides. If you got a chance to sit high atop Mac and tour the ranch, I am sure you had an experience you will never forget. Sadly now, we do not have enough volunteers to finish the year out with camel rides. (No more pony rides either). In fact, we a...
