  • What does lifetime fill mean?

    Protech Auto Service|Oct 24, 2020

When I was a kid, my dad would have to take the car down to the garage every few months for a chassis lubrication, usually at the same time as the oil and filter change. Now, apart from a few components, the chassis lube is now a thing of the past. That kind of progress has been making its way to fluids, which are now commonly labeled as lasting for a “lifetime.” What does lifetime fill mean? The words “lifetime fill” raise a few questions, including whose lifetime — mine or my car’s? It’s a good question and one reason to read the fine prin...

    Oct 24, 2020

Couple that with his local roots and you have a winning combination. “I was born and raised in Bakersfield,” said Marion, “and a proud graduate of East Bakersfield High.” “I think that both my knowledge of the industry and my background has helped make Stockdale Tile the success it is today and it’s exciting to be able to now...

    Pat Doody, staff writer|Oct 24, 2020

Although she has a degree in Art from California State University Northridge, Helen McAllister worked for many years as a behaviorist for LA County Schools. It wasn't until she and her husband moved to Tehachapi in 1990 that she began thinking about her art. She knew she wanted to teach art locally and began to teach for Tehachapi Valley Recreation and Park District. As it was during the Christmas season, she did some sample paintings for the class. The first of her series was of Kelcy's Cafe....

  • The High Desert: a living land of beauty and desolation

    Jon Hammond, contributing writer|Oct 24, 2020

East of the Tehachapi Mountains lies the Mojave Desert, a 48,000 square-mile expanse that is one of the great deserts of the world. It is one of the wetter deserts on Earth and is home to nearly 2,000 species of vascular plants. The region near to Tehachapi is commonly referred to as High Desert, since the average elevation is above 2,000 feet – people are often surprised to learn that the town of Mojave, at 2,762 feet, is about 150 feet higher in elevation than Keene at 2,602 feet. The High D...

  • A lady who remembered when the railroad was being built, and when there was only one house in Tehachapi

    Jon Hammond, contributing writer|Oct 24, 2020

My husband and I joined the Southern Pacific construction forces at Caliente [in the early 1870s] to keep a boarding house for the men who were on the big work. Mr. Hood was in charge of the work and he was very kind to us, and gave us a big tent to live in until a house could be built. He used to drop in for visit quite often, and I wonder if he remembers teaching me how to make eggnog in that old tent? The work was rather monotonous, nothing but hard work day after day. The laborers were...

  • The perils of home brewing

    Jon Hammond, contributing writer|Oct 24, 2020

One time I decided to brew some beer at home, so I got some malt extract and made a big batch. When the fermentation is finished and you get ready to bottle it, the beer is totally flat so you have to add a little sugar back in and then cap it, so it ferments just enough to get carbonated again. Well, I made a mistake and used cane sugar instead of corn sugar or malt sugar. When I figured it was done, I took two six-packs and headed down to Mojave to share some with the guys I worked with at Sou...

    Diana Wade, Disability Advocate|Oct 24, 2020

Question: My rheumatologist just told me I have fibromyalgia and he called it connective tissue disease. He is sending me out for more testing to determine what I have. I have not been able to work since 2019 due to "fibryo fog" severe fatigue. I also have muscle and joint pain and stiffness, weakness, and many other symptoms. He is also telling me I should file for disability but I'm only 35 years old! Can I qualify for disability? Answer: Connective tissue diseases are referred to as a group...

  • Dark and scary times

    Mel White, contributing writer|Oct 24, 2020

Usually this time of year I like to write about how I love October, the month of Halloween, especially because of all the dark and scary movies that are on television. I'm not necessarily a big fan of dressing up or decorating for the actual Halloween holiday itself, but I do enjoy seeing other people's scary yard art and gruesome costumes. As far back as I can remember, I have always loved the telling of macabre tales and ghost stories through horror books and frightful movies and tellings...

  • Clearing Windows caches

    Greg Cunningham, owner of Tech-hachapi|Oct 24, 2020

In its widespread non-technical use, a cache (pronounced cash) is a collection of items of the same type stored in a hidden or inaccessible place. In the technical world, a cache is either specialized hardware or a specific software location that stores recently used data. Programs can access cached data quickly the next time the data is needed. Clearing your caches can help with troubleshooting computer issues, free up disk space, remove personal data and generally improve system performance....

  • Re-elect President Trump rally

    Craig Luther, rally co-organizer|Oct 24, 2020

On Saturday, October 17, we conducted our fourth Re-Elect President Trump rally in Tehachapi since late July. There were only about 500 folks in attendance (our last rally in late September drew close to 1,000), due in part to competing Trump rallies taking place in Bakersfield at the same time. All of our participating "Trump Troops" were excited to be among like-minded spirits and fully engaged in supporting the president's re-election. There were smiling, joyful faces everywhere, among a...

  • Aunt Minnie

    Pat Gracey, contributing writer|Oct 24, 2020

I read an article a while back that described a study (a study?) about why children didn't care for the school lunches. We're talking about a carefully planned, nutritionally balanced lunch. That last sentence says it all. What kid likes a carefully planned, nutritious lunch? I remember my youngest child (now past 50) used to tell me that he always put his peas in the empty milk carton. Good place to hide peas! Of course, some kids eat the lunches and think nothing much about it. The general pop...

  • Ridgecrest Chamber Music Society concert series

    Oct 24, 2020

The Ridgecrest Chamber Music Society is excited and pleased to once again be able to offer wonderful concerts this season. RCMS has been offering an annual series of concerts for almost 15 years. In planning this year’s concert series, the RCMS leadership always had in mind that COVID-19 restrictions would have an impact. Generally, concerts entertain an audience of hundreds but chamber music is performed for a much smaller audience in a more intimate setting. That makes chamber music uniquely situated to continue to entertain audiences d...
