  • Doin' what comes naturally

    Pat Gracey, contributing writer|Oct 29, 2022

My mother used to like the song, "Smiles." It described how smiles can make you happy and even make you blue. Also, smiles that drive away the tear drops as the sunshine drives away the dew. Then, there are smiles that have a tender meaning that the eyes of love alone can see. Then it says, and I quote: "But the smile that fills my heart with gladness is the smile that you give to me." Looking at The Loop newspaper I enjoyed reading Scott Ware's article about local folk smiling and speaking to...

  • The Kern Valley Museum

    Mel Makaw, contributing writer|Oct 29, 2022

Kernville is like a magnet for me – I love making day trips into the whole Lake Isabella area for a variety of reasons, and many of them are in Kernville – and once I get started it's hard to stop. The town of Kernville is full of history and present-day activities, including river rafting and kayaking, fishing, wading in the river, camping, hiking, and shopping. The small downtown area features a number of antiques shops and gift shops, and of course there are great places to eat and drink as...

  • Wheel squeal (what causes squealing while steering)

    Oct 29, 2022

When teenagers squeal at a concert, it's usually a sound of joy. When your vehicle squeals when you are turning, it could be a sign of something dangerous. When engineers designed your vehicle's steering system, they intended it to work smoothly and silently. So, you know when you get a warning sign like a squeal or a squeak while turning, something is not right. The noise could be coming from different sources. Power steering is used in virtually all vehicles today since, without a little...

  • Rabbitbrush: the golden flowering light of autumn

    Jon Hammond, contributing writer|Oct 29, 2022

One of my favorite aspects of living in the Tehachapi Mountains is how vibrant and tangible the changing of the seasons can feel. The weather, the angle of sunlight, the temperatures, the plants and animals. . . they all shift and pulse seasonally. The longer you live here, the more expected and predictable these patterns are. Right now, we're in the golden days of autumn, and this is partly due to one of the most significant flowering events of the year in the Tehachapi Mountains: the annual...

Tootie's grandmother, Francis Tungate, was from an early ranching family and she married Jess Cuddeback, from another pioneer ranching family. At one time the Cuddebacks owned most of the land that now comprises Golden Hills. For 71 years Tootie was married to...

  • Chrome password checkup, very short extension cords

    Greg Cunningham, owner of Tech-hachapi|Oct 29, 2022

Every time we hear about a data breach, we know that a new bunch of usernames and passwords were just stolen and are about to be used against us. Somehow, and by somebody. But how do you tell if they stole YOUR email address and or password? You can always check by going to www.haveibeenpwned.com and entering your info, but wouldn't it be handy to have something that could check for you, something you already have on your computer? Google has a tool for the Chrome browser that will alert you...

  • Mojave Air & Space Port – then and now (part 4)

    Cathy Hansen, contributing writer|Oct 29, 2022

I have been trying to touch on some of the exciting happenings and new projects that have spread their wings at Mojave Airport over the last 50 years. The airport district was formed in 1972 when Dan Sabovich served as airport manager. This is the last of the series of articles. I left off last time when Brian Binnie rocketed SpaceShipOne into history, becoming the first private manned spacecraft to exceed an altitude of 328,000 feet twice within the span of a 14 day period, thus claiming the...

Home Health Services allow for patients to recover at home and still receive care from health professionals. The goal is to improve the quality of life and increase energy, comfort and strength. Many of the rotarians had questions about the services. What kind of home care can you receive? Your physician can give a referral for a nurse to visit your house to...
