For more than 30 years when the Johnson family owned the Tehachapi News, the newspaper was typeset each week on a monumental piece of equipment called a Linotype Machine, which was invented by Ottmar Mergenthaler in 1884. This complex, 6,000-piece device revolutionized the printing industry by enabling type to be cast and stamped quickly, rather than laboriously set by hand, letter by letter. Setting type by hand took so long that prior to the invention of the Linotype, no newspaper in the...

Do you know where the idea of “The Wizard of Oz” came from, where Laura Ingalls Wilder and Louisa May Alcott ended up living the rest of their lives, or how a lion and a dragon became stars of their own adventures? Some of our most beloved books have multiple and interesting behind the scenes stories and mysteries that are not shared in the original stories themselves. In “The Wizard of Oz” Toto pulled back the curtain to reveal the wizard was not only a mere man, but that he really had no magi...
Kaylee wanted a puppy. I knew this was coming and that avoiding the issue was no longer an option. Her seventh birthday was looming and my ‘friend,’ Lillian, told me - in front of Kaylee - that her litter of seven puppies were soon to be ready for their forever homes. Thanks, Lillian. Life was going to change with a puppy in the house, that was for certain. There would be mess to clean up, chewed table legs, ‘little accidents’ on the stairs, needle-sharp teeth, and late-night walks in the dea...

In Ancient Greece, people used smooth stones or malleable clay. In the communal bathrooms of Ancient Rome, they often used their bare hands, which...

Although this process only happens every ten years, a common story is being told about the desert and mountain areas that make up Eastern Kern County, largely by those who don't live here. This tired and familiar story uses...
