    Pat Doody|Nov 8, 2014

Keeley and Janis Osbrink are not your average thirteen and fourteen year olds – both girls already know where they want to go to college. Keeley wants to attend Fresno State, and Janis is thinking about Montana University, because both schools have highly rated rodeo teams. The girls are currently spending many weekends competing in rodeo events sponsored by the California Junior High Rodeo Association. Their events include barrel racing, pole bending, and team roping. She is an equestrienne and has been horse camping in Bear Valley Springs for some time. It is always such a great experience that when she began to think about a place for a second home she immediately thought about the Tehachapi area as a possibility. To make a long story short, she took possession of her new...

  • To Pet or Not to Pet

Liz R Kover, Animal Assisted Activities Director Marleys Mutts Dog Rescue|Nov 8, 2014

When it comes to service dog etiquette, I need to give a shoutout to the kids! The girl pictured here is eight year-old Abby; she represents an impressive consciousness many children seem to possess with regard to manners around dogs in public, where many adults seem to be lacking. I took this picture during an outdoor lunch meeting in Sebastopol, CA a couple of weeks ago, after Abby approached me, and with a very mature and respectful tone, asked if it would be okay for her to pet Betty. She...

Ben Graham, Edward jones Financial Advisor|Nov 8, 2014

November is Long-Term Care Awareness Month – a month dedicated to educating the public about the need to prepare for the potentially devastating costs of long-term care. And the more you know about these expenses, the better prepared you will be to deal with them. To begin with, just how expensive is long-term care? Consider this: The average cost for a private room in a nursing home is more than $87,000 per year, according to the 2014 Cost of Care Survey produced by Genworth, a f...

The year was 1942 and a not quite 18 ½ year old young man, Winthrop "Win" Saville, made a choice – to enlist in what later became known as the Army Air Corps. Living in Alameda, California, at the time, Win and his buddy "Teenie" Baker signed their names on the dotted line the day before Halloween. As it turned out, Win was with the first group of Women Auxiliary Civilian Service members (WACS). Thus began Win's travels and experiences during WWII. From Alameda it was off to La Junta (...

  • The Times I Saw Ronald Reagan

    Susan Wiggins|Nov 8, 2014

October 27, 2014 marked the 50th anniversary of the now famous speech delivered by Ronald Reagan at the Republican convention for the nomination of Barry Goldwater. Hearing that reminded me of the times that I had met Reagan, and I decided to write about those memories and others of my brother Mike Deaver, who worked for Reagan, both in California and Washington, D.C. We lost Mike in 2007, from pancreatic cancer. I saw Reagan at Edwards Air Force Base July 4, 1982, as he and First Lady Nancy...

  • Paranormal Properties

    Natalie Brooks|Nov 8, 2014

I love the cooler autumn weather and the beautiful colors of fall in Tehachapi. Carving pumpkins and displaying them out front is a favorite seasonal pastime for our family. Regrettably, as the kids get older, their jack-o’-lanterns become less friendly and now I’m the one that’s afraid to walk up to the porch at night by myself. Of course, it doesn’t help that they are constantly sneaking up to startle me. I think the only one who shares in my sentiments is John Hancock our dog. He’s been a lit...

You may have a very idealistic vision of retirement--doing all of the things that you never seem to have time to do now. But how do you pursue that vision? Social Security may be around when you retire, but the benefit that you get from Uncle Sam may not provide enough income for your retirement years. To make matters worse, few employers today offer a traditional company pension plan that guarantees you a specific income at retirement. On top of that, people are living longer and must find...
