  • Advice from Tehachapi Lawn & Garden

    Jack Potter, owner|Nov 21, 2015

Well we have had some rain and a little snow. That means the weeds and grass will grow this Spring. Around the end of March or early April we start getting busy with equipment repairs and service. If you have any equipment that needs service please bring it in before the end of March and take advantage of the “REDUCED WINTER RATES”. You will also get your equipment back faster. Remember not to keep fuel in your equipment for more than 30 days if you have not used an ethanol additive. Water in the fuel and clogged fuel systems are the most frequ...

  • All American Tire

    Pat Doody|Nov 21, 2015

The week after the 4th of July of this year, Robert and Ann Curtin took over ownership of All American Tire on Tehachapi Boulevard and turned it into the All American Automotive Center, a full service auto repair shop. Robert explained that this is to be their retirement business. Robert has worked on and rebuilt cars and motors since he was in high school as a hobby and also as a mechanic in auto repair shops. For quite a while he had it in his mind to return to auto repair. About 30 years...

  • Prepare your kids to buy their first home

    Tammy Engel, Mortgage Advisor|Nov 21, 2015

You don’t want your kids to miss out on today’s housing market opportunities, and everything is different since you bought your house. Here’s a primer on how to position your young adults for their first home loan. So far I haven’t written a home loan for anyone under age 19, but theoretically an 18-year-old’s signature could be binding on the purchase agreement contract. Sound loan underwriting decisions have always been based on the three C’s: Credit, capacity, and collateral. Sometimes y...

  • Meet your new neighbors

    Pat Doody, Welcome Hostess|Nov 21, 2015

I first met Sarah and Randy Frantz at Tehachapi’s 4th of July Hot Dog Festival when they told me that they were buying a home here. They finally were able to make the move from Long Beach in August. For the last 12 years, Randy has worked for the Los Angeles County Fire Department in Palmdale and had commuted to work from Long Beach. Since Randy’s parents live in Bear Valley Springs, Tehachapi seemed like an ideal move with a much shorter commute. Randy and Sarah were both raised in Hun...

  • Do it yourself or get help?

    William Kritlow|Nov 21, 2015

We’re three weeks into the open enrollment for the Affordability Care Act (ACA) or, as it is more popularly known, Obamacare. There are a few things I’ve learned that I’d like to pass on to you. The first, although it’s quite self-serving, don’t take this on by yourself. Find a qualified agent or broker to take it on for you. There are some real subtleties that may require you to call Covered CA, and unless you know the “how and when” of that experience, you can literally spend hours on hold...

  • Ancient Hebrews encouragement to traumatized Parisians: 'Vive l'amour!'

    Nancy Bacon, Reverend|Nov 21, 2015

“Hebrews”, a book in the New Testament, most likely written for early Christians considering abandoning their faith, offers words of hope to modern Parisians and the rest of us. Those ancient Christians were experiencing terror and persecution, too. Who could blame them for walking away from ideals of love and forgiveness, which seemed to stand no chance against such violence? Isn’t the normal reaction to horrific murder a deep thirst for revenge? Who can we hate and kill for this? The day b...

  • Have-A-Heart put 'wish list' on Giving Tree

    Nov 21, 2015

Christmas came to Tehachapi a little early with the Have-a-Heart Humane Society “Giving Tree.” Volunteers Cherrill Gragg, Valerie Santiago and Jennifer Jorgensen decorated the tree with paws and photo cards memorializing some pets who went over the Rainbow Bridge and rescued pets who have found a home through Have-a-Heart. The tree is topped by a dog angel, a special ornament belonging to Gina Christopher, in memory or her beloved Murphy. Have-a-Heart is asking Tehachapi’s pet lovers to find it in their hearts to support this fundraiser by vi...

  • Computer support scams, don't fall for 'em!

    Greg Cunningham|Nov 21, 2015

Say you’re shopping for ’55 Chevy alternator brackets or something, and a super-scary web page comes up that uses some or all of the below phrases, maybe a Microsoft or Windows logo. The page might even read itself over your speakers. DON’T PANIC. Do NOT call the number on your screen. It’s just a scam. There is NOTHING WRONG with your computer. Just close your browser and shut down your computer. Give it a minute or so to think about what it did, and then turn it back on. See? Everyth...

  • Stuff your dressing

    Victoria Alwin, MSRD|Nov 21, 2015

Some folks say that stuffing and dressing are the same. Actually they’re not. Like real estate, it’s all about location. Stuffing is baked within the turkey. Dressing has the same basic ingredients, but is baked in a separate container. The question isn’t which tastes better, but which is safer to eat. One of the biggest problems this time of year isn’t whether your turkey is over cooked or under cooked, but whether it and your stuffing will make you full or sick. ALL poultry have Salmonella bacteria which can make even the best feast a memor...

  • New Horizons Changes Course as Pioneer 6 reaches 50

    Dale Hawkins|Nov 21, 2015

After dazzling the world with high resolution images and high-tech data from Pluto, New Horizons is going for the extra point. Even while it continued the slow process of downloading the massive store of data it gathered at Pluto, New Horizons changed course for yet another Kuiper Belt object (KBO) called 2014 MU69. Surely there will be an initiative to give it a snazzier name! I'd like to start the bidding with "Rupert" from a fictional KBO in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Orbiting the...
