They love the mountains and the trains as well as having four seasons, but the primary reason was that Tehachapi is between Lancaster and Monterey...

Sue Wonacott, Medicare certified insurance agent|Nov 22, 2014

Life insurance is a gift – yes, a gift – we give to our loved ones. Without it, they do not have the money to perhaps cover our burial, their ongoing living expenses, and college expenses. It is the one gift given to them at the time of our death, the gift of money. When our office is notified of one of our client’s deaths, we carry their policy with us constantly so the money can be distributed immediately to the beneficiaries. There are different types of life insurance. Term life insur...

    Ed Gordon|Nov 22, 2014

The Stallion Springs Neighborhood Watch held its monthly meeting on November 12 with a packed house. Police Chief Mike Grant gave a presentation on social media and its effects on our lives. The majority of employers are asking for your passwords and use social media to research candidates. The same hold true for colleges. Postings of inappropriate photos, drinking, drugs, bad mouthing previous employers can a...

  • Choosing Your Insurance: Open Enrollment

    Terence G. Brady, Brady Chiropractic|Nov 22, 2014

Every year around this time of year you get to choose your next years’ insurance carrier during what is called “Open Enrollment”. Why you can’t change your insurance coverage any time you want is beyond me, but that is another story. You get about four weeks to make up your mind and make a decision. Talk about stress. You have to do your research, make your decision and then live with it the rest of the year. I think that the whole scenario is to make it convenient for the insurance compani...

  • Spiritual Insights from my Dog

Nancy Bacon, Tehachapi Community Congregational Church|Nov 22, 2014

If you Google “things I learned from my dog” many lists pop up containing snippets of wisdom people have gleaned from their loyal, fur-covered friends. My little dog, Oliver, a rescued miniature pinscher-chihuahua (MinPinHuahua), is one of my best spiritual guides. When life is overloaded with crazy, he remains calm, predictable, always loving, and reassuring. He keeps Sabbath by resting regularly and he extravagantly welcomes everyone. Recently, when my daughter’s high school in Baker...

    Greg Garrett, Tehachapi City Manager|Nov 22, 2014

Thanksgiving is here already! Can you believe it? This a great time of year in Tehachapi and I’m grateful for this wonderful community. In the spirit of this gracious holiday, I’d like to take the opportunity offer my own sincere thanks for some of the many things I am grateful for. First and foremost, I am thankful to live under the flag of our great nation. Each year, as elections come and go peacefully, I’m reminded that despite our shortcomings and disagreements, we are still a nation full...

  • Without Further Ado

    Natalie Brooks|Nov 22, 2014

It had taken the whole family to load up the side dishes we were bringing to my Mother’s for Thanksgiving. Once we arrived the kids dashed excitedly into the house, leaving only me and my husband to unload everything. “I don’t know if there is enough food,” he said sarcastically. “Are you sure there’s not more in the trunk?” “Well, I had to make enough to feed 25 people!” I defended myself. “Yes, but eighteen of them, all put together, weigh less than all this food.” I gave him a dirty look...

  • Retirement Planning, Part 2: The Basics

Jennifer Williams, President J. Williams Personal Financial Planning|Nov 22, 2014

Build your retirement fund: Save, save, save When you know roughly how much money you’ll need, your next goal is to save that amount. First, you’ll have to map out a savings plan that works for you. Assume a conservative rate of return (e.g., 5 to 6 percent), and then determine approximately how much you’ll need to save every year between now and your retirement to reach your goal. The next step is to put your savings plan into action. It’s never too early to get started (ideally, begin saving...

This was the first Clean-Up Day of the former Golden Hills Country Club, located on the corner of Westwood Drive and Woodford-Tehachapi Road. Littered with fly-away trash, overgrown with long-forgotten junipers and nasty Star Thistle; punctuated with tires, old wood with rusty nails, and broken fencing...

  • What is the Benefit of Winter Tires?

    Nov 22, 2014

This is a really good question. Most new vehicles in Tehachapi come with all-season tires that work pretty well in the Tehachapi winter conditions many car owners encounter. First, let’s talk about the things that dedicated winter tires do really well, touch on all-seasons and then you should have some information to help you in your tire selection. The first thing about winter is that it’s cold. The rubber compound used in summer and all-season tires gets a bit hard when California temperatures drop below 45 degrees Fahrenheit. Winter tir...

    Rick Gillies|Nov 22, 2014

Here it is, the holiday season and time to start thinking about Christmas and Christmas trees. I decided to write this article to let people know some things about the care of living Christmas trees. Getting a live tree should save you a lot of money because you are able to use it as a Christmas tree for a few years – as long as you can keep it alive. Then when it grows too big to be a Christmas tree, you could either plant it in the yard or in the community. But how easy is it to keep it alive? Here are a few points to help you made a d...

  • Tehachapi Pays Its Dues as We Reach for the Stars

    Dale Hawkins|Nov 22, 2014

Tehachapians are on the front lines of the conquest of space. Many work at Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Edwards Air Force Base/NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center, Mojave Air and Space Port, or one of the many supporting activities in the area. We all share the thrill of success – and the agony of the setbacks. We lost one of our own when Michael Alsbury went down with SpaceShipTwo VSS Enterprise on Halloween Day. He left behind a wife and two young children. We must help them find lasting m...

  • Lehigh to Burn Clean Rubbish

Tina Fisher Cunningham, The Forde Files No 83|Nov 22, 2014

An informational meeting Nov. 20 on the Lehigh Southwest Cement Plant application to use alternative fuels in the cement-making process – including treated trash, biomass and old tires – drew tough questions from residents worried about air quality. "If this great experiment goes awry," said a person in the audience of 30 at the Kern County Veterans Memorial Building, "is there insurance to compensate people?" Another person said, "I am being treated for COPD, asthma and chronic bronchitis. Whe...

Neighbors pitching in for the community It was burned and blackened by two major wildfires -- the West fire in 2010 and the Canyon fire in 2011-- and it has a reputation as a sanctuary for the rebellious and iconoclastic, but Old West Ranch is a beautiful place that the residents love. Recently the neighbors spent five days sprucing up miles of ranch roads and removing charred, dead trees. Everyone shared lunch at mid-day, taking time to talk and enjoy the view from high above the Tehachapi...
