  • Something to be thankful for every day

    Mel White|Nov 23, 2019

I find myself struggling to write a Thanksgiving column this week, as no matter what I say, I am painfully aware of all the suffering going on in the world today. I know that in spite of all the burning disasters, killing sprees, ugliness and uncertainty going on in the world at large and even in our little corner of it, there is always something to be thankful for. And I am thankful, even as I also know I have much more to be thankful for than so many others do. So today this is a slightly...

  • Generators for Seniors fundraiser, Dec. 6

    Nov 23, 2019

After our last power outages left many medically fragile and oxygen dependent seniors in the dark and struggling to breathe, we decided we needed to help somehow. Indoor rechargeable/solar generators and power stations to run their oxygen concentrators is the most useful and direct solution. Many back up batteries for oxygen are not meant to last the 2 to 3 day outages we have recently experienced. On Dec. 6 from 5:30 to 9 p.m. come out to Westlane Brewing at 207 E. H St., Tehachapi, to help raise funds for portable power for our seniors....

  • Cemeteries interest AAUW members

    Phyllis Belcher|Nov 23, 2019

Members of the American Association of University Women learned about cemeteries and graveyards when Barbara Wood and Janice Armstrong spoke at the November monthly meeting. It was a dozen years ago that they started an AAUW interest group, which they called The Cemetery Club. Since then they have learned more than they ever envisioned. They explained there are at least 10 cemeteries in Tehachapi and more may be discovered. Most people in Tehachapi are familiar with the East Side Cemetery and...

  • Hometown supermarkets show generosity to community

    Nov 23, 2019

Our supermarkets, Albertson’s and Save Mart, now joined by Walmart, are really generous to our community in supporting good-deed efforts. This is the ninth year we have experienced this support from Albertson’s and Save Mart! My church, Tehachapi Community Church, at East E and Green Streets, has been collecting donations from our congregation to provide Thanksgiving meals through the Salvation Army’s program for less fortunate families. When called on, these supermarkets came through in a big way. We in Tehachapi are fortunate to have many...

  • Meet Your New Neighbors

    Pat Doody, Welcome Hostess|Nov 23, 2019

Palmdale residents Darek and Dena Galloway have had a dream to move to Tehachapi since 2007. They loved the natural setting of the mountains and the easy-living lifestyle. It took until 2019 to make that dream come true; they had lived in Palmdale for 17 years by the time they finally made the move. Dena still works as a social worker in Palmdale for the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, where she works with the homeless. Derek was born in Los Angeles as was his father. He is an...

  • Invest in your family and community

Jennifer Palakiko, Edward Jones Financial Advisor|Nov 23, 2019

This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor. Why do you invest? For many people, here's the answer: "I invest because I want to enjoy a comfortable retirement." And that's certainly a great reason, because all of us should regularly put money away for when we're retired. But you can also benefit by investing in your family and your community. Let's start with your family members, particularly the younger ones. How can you invest in their future?...

A big thank you to...

  • Can Polycythemia Vera qualify for Social Security Disability?

    Diana Wade, Disability Advocate|Nov 23, 2019

Question: I am a 60-year-old man just diagnosed with Polycythemia vera. I am now unable to work due to some of the symptoms. I have painful swelling in the big toe of my right foot making it hard to stand and walk. I have numbness, tingling, burning and weakness in both my hands so bad that I can't even hold a coffee cup. I get shortness of breath, headaches and dizziness if I even try to mow the lawn. All of that and almost daily weakness and fatigue. I am on State Disability right now, but it...

  • Phobias

    Rebecca Valenzuela|Nov 23, 2019

Phobias – you know, irrational fears like fear of flying, the dark, heights, etc. I have had a fear of escalators since childhood. Occasionally, if the escalator wasn’t too steep or didn’t seem to be moving too fast, I could do it. Unfortunately, that wasn’t usually the case. When my mother and I were in front of an escalator, I would protest that I just couldn’t do it. Then we would march off to the out of the way elevator. My mother was a saint. Anyone else would have probably wanted to wring my neck. The problem gradually became less seve...

  • Community Church hosts Prayer Vigil for victims of fires

    Nov 23, 2019

Residents and visitors in the greater Tehachapi area were faced with a new challenge the last week of October. Electric power was shut off in many areas while the winds blew hard, leading to a series of Red Flag alerts. While the Kincaid, Getty and Tick fires exploded in Northern and Southern California, first responders in Tehachapi were placed on high alert to respond to multiple local fire incidents and medical emergencies. In response, a public event was held in the early evening of Nov. 5,...

  • Statement from Dick Taylor

    Nov 23, 2019

Based on my 27 years running our family business, military record, experience as a county department head and knowledge of the district, I’ve been urged by many community leaders and friends to run for District 1 of the Kern County Board of Supervisors. Having first moved into the district in 1979 after my honorable discharge from the Marine Corps, I consider it a great honor to be approached to run for this office. However, after a lot of thought and research, I have decided to not seek election in March 2020 as District 1 Supervisor. My h...

  • What's Up in Bear Valley Springs?

    Linda Coverdale|Nov 23, 2019

The recent PSPS events certainly had a lot of our community in an uproar and disrupted services. On top of that, the schools were closed causing, at a minimum, great inconvenience to working parents, plus meals and a warm, safe place for children who depend on those services. As well, people who needed power for medical devices were put at risk. Hopefully a better solution can be found in the future. At the November CSD meeting, discussions were held on preparing for possible future outages. A warming (or alternately, cooling) center, as well...

  • St. Jude's Anglican Church moves back to their old home

    Nov 23, 2019

In a joyful celebration, St. Jude's in the Mountains Anglican Church began ministry anew at their former campus on 1200 S. Curry St. Almost 40 years ago, members of the church built the building themselves, but three years ago they had to surrender the entire campus to an Episcopalian diocese who prevailed against the Anglican diocese in a lawsuit. Now with a new owner, the property became available once again to St. Jude's Church and they celebrated their first Sunday "back home" on Nov. 3....

  • Spam from yourself, easy Windows 10 shortcuts

    Greg Cunnigham|Nov 23, 2019

Have you ever received an email that looked like it came from you but you didn't send it? Self-spam is happening a lot now and it's usually tied to a blackmail or shaming scheme. Forging, or faking, an email address is called spoofing. And it's easy. Most email systems don't have any security checks to make sure the person in the email's "From" line is who they say they are. With billions of email addresses and thousands of email servers all over the world, it is impossible to verify that...

  • What's the real return on your investments?

    Lance Patton|Nov 23, 2019

As an investor, you probably pay attention to nominal return, which is the percentage increase or decrease in the value of an investment over a given period of time, usually expressed as an annual return. However, to estimate actual income or growth potential in order to target financial goals – for example, a certain level of retirement income – it's important to consider the effects of taxes and inflation. The remaining increase or decrease is your real return. Let's say you want to purchase a...

  • Tehachapi Valley Wrestling Club

    Curtis Nelson|Nov 23, 2019

Tehachapi Valley Wrestling Club has started their wrestling season with 50 boys and girls from kindergarten to eighth grade. The team is divided into three practice groups: middle school, grades 2-5 and grades K-1, to ensure that each wrestler receives a lot of individual attention. TVWC has been doing a lot of fundraising over the last year to purchase a new wrestling mat for the middle school practice site. "It is so great to have this new mat for our kids," said TVWC President Adrian Hart. TV...

  • Do I need a new battery?

    provided by NAPA-Kern Auto Parts|Nov 23, 2019

For many of us, we don’t worry about our car battery until it doesn’t start the vehicle ... then it’s a major problem, especially if we’re away from home. Wouldn’t it be great if we knew ahead of time that our vehicle battery was on its last leg and we were able to replace it before this inconvenience occurred? Today’s vehicles have more electrical components, gadgets and do-dads than ever before. Your battery really has to work hard to keep up with all this new technology. Look at what we have today: power windows, door locks, keyless ent...

  • Journey to Sedona and more

    Judith Campanaro|Nov 23, 2019

I hesitated to write this article about myself for fear of bragging. But bragging isn't what this is about. My intent is to share with you an amazing journey intertwined with insight and "aha" moments. When I turned 70 I thought getting older was the end, but it's not. Aging is only the beginning. First let me tell you about my book "The Wisdomkeepers, Tehachapi Women of Substance." I have so many incredible friends here in Tehachapi and I wanted to document their stories. Everyone has a story...

  • Distracted driving – the real cost

    provided by Protech Auto Service|Nov 23, 2019

It’s time to face the truth. When was the last time you checked a text, made a call, or dropped a ketchup covered french fry on your lap while driving? How many of your “near misses” as a pedestrian, or in a vehicle, have involved a driver with a cell phone in their hand? Our technologies have conditioned us to immediately respond to a like, text, post or call from our mobile device. Furthermore, our “on-the-move” society of modern conveniences makes it more likely for us to combine daily functions - like applying make-up or eating fast food...
