  • Information for 'Feds'

    Nov 23, 2019

All about WEP. You have certainly heard much over the years about WEP and GPO. If you are under the Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) these two programs can affect how much annuity you or your spouse receives at retirement. The Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) reduces your earned Social Security benefit. The Government Pension Offset (GPO) reduces your spouse’s Social Security benefit by 2/3 of your annuity pension. They do not apply to those under the Federal Employment Retirement System (FERS) because they paid a payroll tax to S...

The Tehachapi Valley lost a kind, interesting and community-minded man with the passing of Harold Cox, 84, on Oct. 20. Harold had been battling cancer but was still able to get around, and only a few weeks ago celebrated his 84th birthday at Kelcy's Restaurant surrounded by a large group of friends. Harold had a special appreciation for antiques and collectibles, and he did his part to capture some of America's past, creating a small but thoroughly-stocked gasoline filling station from the...

  • Travelin' days

    Pat Gracey|Nov 23, 2019

In 1950, when I began living in the Southland, it was, and still is, 200 miles from Oceanside, Calif. to Tehachapi, and if I had a dollar for every time I have made the trip I would have a comfortable amount. At first, our trips consisted of getting into my husband's 1947 Buick Roadmaster and taking off. It was a lovely car, one that he acquired during his bachelor days while still an enlisted man in the Corps. Highway 101, between the two points, at that time, was a three lane affair. The...

  • Holiday season in Tehachapi

    Greg Garrett, Tehachapi City Manager|Nov 23, 2019

It's certainly the holiday season as our public works team completes one of my favorite tasks, putting up the Christmas decorations Downtown. We reinvested in new decorations a year ago with LED snowflakes along with illuminated garlands adorning each Downtown light post. This year we purchased a few more for Mill Street and the new transit center so the entrance to our City off of Highway 58 and the heavily-used parking and ridesharing facility had the same dose of Christmas cheer. Thanks once...
