Here's a peek into the history and characteristics of the grapes we grow at the vineyard. The Riesling...
Several years ago, in early December, I was sitting on my couch sipping a cup of spiced apple cider, feeling quite proud of myself. The tree was up, the entire house was decorated, the stockings were hung on the mantle and a sprig of mistletoe was hanging in the doorway. As I sat there, basking in a sense of accomplishment, I suddenly had an image of Jesus walking through the door. "Wow!" he said, in my imagination. "Your home looks so festive. What's the occasion?" With delight, I replied,...
I recently had a unique, one-of-a-kind day tripping experience that I'd like to share with you today. My friend Joan Cote called me in early November and asked if I would like to go with her to visit the Mobile Vietnam Memorial Wall, which was to be in Rosamond for a few days, sponsored by Southern Kern Unified School District, Rosamond Municipal Advisory Council, and the Rosamond Chamber of Commerce. I said yes immediately. Joan and I are the same age, and the Vietnam War was our generation's w...

It's hard to believe the Holidays are upon us again! Sitting around the Thanksgiving dinner table, often children will ask their parents the "what if?" question. We all know what that is. "How do you want your estate handled?" Follow along with me as we discuss common questions. What is better, a will or a trust? A trust will streamline the process of transferring an estate after you die while avoiding a lengthy and potentially costly period of probate (in California if you have assets like a...
Nov. 11 was, of course, Veteran’s Day. Our local Veterans held their ceremony, commencing at 2 p.m. with a welcome and introduction by past commander, Martin Hernandez. The speaker for the day was Commander Bill Kritlow. He spoke about a Navy leader from the Revolutionary War. This leader was involved until his dying die. During the induction ceremony, our most recently departed veteran was memorialized. John Pruden, a very active member of the Bear Valley Veterans Association, left us on May 22. He left behind his dear wife, Susan, as well as...

If your children are grown and your mortgage is paid off, do you still need to carry life insurance? It depends on your situation, but for many people, a cash-value life insurance policy, such as whole life or universal life, can be a valuable, tax-efficient source of retirement income. And by drawing on the cash value of your policy, you might be able to temporarily reduce the amount you take out from your retirement accounts, such as your IRA and 401(k). This ability could be especially...
Ronald "Ron" Wayne Depew, a beloved member of the Tehachapi community, passed away on Oct. 25, at the age of 74, following a brief battle with cancer. With his smooth baritone voice, trademark beard and handsome appearance, Ron had a remarkable presence that positively impacted every room he entered. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Born on May 23, 1949, in Visalia, California, Ron was the son of Jack and Mabel Depew. He attended Mt. Whitney High School and later pursued higher...
Once again in this season of thanksgiving, I find myself struggling a little about what to say about being thankful, as no matter what I say or think, I am painfully aware of all the suffering going on in the world today. I know that in spite of all the mass shootings, ugliness and uncertainty in our country – not to mention the out and out war going on in the world at large – there is always something to be thankful for. And I am thankful, even as I also know I have much more to be thankful for...
Albertsons and Save Mart have supported The Salvation Army's Thanksgiving meal program, and our church's collection for this worthwhile program, for the last 14 years. My church, the Tehachapi Community Church, recently collected from our congregation to provide Thanksgiving dinners for The Salvation Army to distribute to less fortunate families in Tehachapi. Donations were accepted during Sunday services and online at the church's website, www.tccucc.org. When called on, Save Mart and...

In this issue we will continue the discussion begun in The Loop newspaper's Oct. 28 issue describing 7 end-of-summer car care tips. Check the battery Summer is an easy time for the car battery, but cold weather can tax it. Don't get caught by the first cold morning with a dead battery. First, look for corrosion on the battery terminals. This needs to be cleaned or repaired to eliminate resistance between the battery and the rest of the electrical system, such as the starter and blower. Then,...
Women meet challenges as they seek equity. This was the topic for American Association of University Women at their November meeting when Shane McGarrett told about her life journey spending 45 years in aerospace. She was just 17 years old when she joined the military. After three years in the United States Air Force, she became one of the first women to be fully trained and certified as a jet engine mechanic at March Air Force Base. McGarrett wrote about the struggle to achieve her goals in...
One of the most interesting of our local habitats to explore and to experience the outdoors is also one of the Tehachapi Mountains' most widespread and interesting: the oak woodland. This plant community is abundant in Central and Southern California, and found throughout the Tehachapis. Locally, it consists primarily of Valley Oak (Quercus lobata) and Blue Oak (Quercus douglasii) trees interspersed with Gray Pines, California Buckeyes, Mountain Mahogany, Buckbrush, Great Basin Sagebrush and a...
The Tehachapi Mountains have at least some snow every winter, but you can make sure that your yard has plenty snowballs even in drier years if you plant a Snowball Bush or two. These appropriately named shrubs produce large, globular white blossoms that do in fact resemble carefully crafted snowballs. In spring they are loaded with flowers, and they will bloom for weeks. There are a number of different species of Viburnum that are referred to as "Snowball Bush," including the European Snowball...

It isn't often that one of our local Honor Flight recipients is a woman, but this year proved to be an exception. Well-known and long time resident, Diane Griffin, was the 2023 honoree. Her flight departed Oct. 16 and returned on Oct. 18. And, even more unusual was the fact that three other Honor Flight recipients were also female, as well as their guardian Kay Philips of Tehachapi and bus leader, Arlene Aninion. Both were veterans themselves. Each person had one regulation bag that they were...
