  • Tweaking Facebook

    Greg Cunningham|Nov 26, 2016

We log on to Facebook to see photos of families and friends and see who’s off to some far away land and (probably) having more fun than we are - but we don’t want to give the book of faces too much information about ourselves. Here are some changes you can make to take control of Facebook. Prevent your friend’s page likes from turning into ads If you don’t want Facebook to show you ads from pages your friends have liked, you can turn it off. Log in to Facebook. Click on the downward pointin...

We, at HWB (Honey Wagon Brewing), are delighted to announce that we are changing our name to Local Craft Beer, Tehachapi or LCB. Nearing the one year anniversary of our ownership, we felt it was time to separate ourselves from the old brewery in name, beer and recipes. There are some really amazing things happening in Tehachapi and we are proud and excited to be a part of this community's continuing growth. We have enjoyed and will continue working with the City, local charities and local...

  • Don't fall for it!

    Tammy Engel, Mortgage Advisor|Nov 26, 2016

After you’ve done a new home loan, your mailbox gets stuffed with all kinds of mail. Anything you receive from your lender would be important, of course, as would anything from the local county tax assessor or recorder. But what about all the other stuff? It sure looks official, with pictures of seals and barcodes. Here is just one example of mail that looks like it needs attention, but is really best shredded. “Recorded Deed Notice”! “First Documents recommends that all CA homeowners obtain...

  • How to make a difference

Liz Block, Water Conservation Coordinator, Tehachapi-Cummings County Water District|Nov 26, 2016

I’m not very philosophical, so I always appreciate when others present ideas in a way that helps me think about stuff. One of the aspects of Social Development Theory outlines how there are different spheres or ecosystems (e.g., self, family, community, country, world) in which any individual moves or operates. As water conservation coordinator, part of my job is to influence people, and I might try different approaches depending on your focus. We all know people who are focused on self. They’re tough to influence because they’re absol...

  • Nature prepares for winter

Tina Fisher Cunningham, Fisher Forde Media|Nov 26, 2016

Leafy trees in Tehachapi are preparing for winter by shutting down nutrients to their leaves, a process that produces bursts of brilliant color in a final farewell. The red and burgundy colors are the result of chemical changes triggered by light and cold. The yellow and orange colors are in the leaves all along, masked by the green chlorophyll. In the fall, trees break down the green pigments, exposing the colors. In the dry brown leaves on the ground, all the pigments are gone. Some trees,...

  • Affordable housing in state's central backbone

Tina Fisher Cunningham, Fisher Forde Media|Nov 26, 2016

California's economy is rebounding toward full employment, according to the Caltrans-California Economic Forecast 2016-2050 County-Level Forecast, Mark Schniepp, director. "In 2017, the big story in the California labor market will be 'full employment,'" the forecast says. "Since the beginning of the Great Recession in 2007, the unemployment rate has been elevated with a large number of job seekers unable to find work. But in 2017, the unemployment rate in California will average 4.9 percent,...

  • Tehachapi aims to capture $158 million in retail trade leakage

Tina Fisher Cunningham, Fisher Forde Media|Nov 26, 2016

Retail leakage happens when residents go to Bakersfield or Lancaster/Palmdale to shop instead of shopping in Tehachapi. Tehachapi Economic Development Coordinator Michelle Vance is on a mission to turn that around, to keep the money in Tehachapi and to draw shoppers up the hill to make their purchases. "One hundred fifty-eight million dollars leave our town every year," Vance told the Greater Tehachapi Economic Development Council on Nov. 2 at the Tehachapi Police Department community room....

  • NYC marathon for ZERO

    Randall Kam, Dr.|Nov 26, 2016

I was able to complete the NYC marathon (135th overall) on Nov. 6 and I raised $3421 with a majority of that from my Tehachapi dental patients for ZERO. Heartfelt thanks to those generous people who took the time to support ZERO prostate and also allow me to do the largest marathon in the world with over 51,000 finishers. We started on Staten Island and journeyed through the other four boroughs: Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx and Manhattan. The race day was gorgeous, sunny, but cool and my wave began...
