On Nov. 18-20, local train store Gold Coast Station held their 7th annual car and train show. The show was put on by Rachel and Hans Kahl, who are the owners/ operators of the store. I was blown away by this event. The Wandering Railroad "G" scale display was there for the first two days. This collection was built and is owned by Matt and Jerry Abreu. I was very impressed with the fantastic detail in the layout. The first two days of the event was devoted to the "G" scale trains and the...

If I may borrow from Dickens, the holidays can be the best of times and the worst of times. Holidays can intensify feelings of anxiety and worry for some and for different reasons. The grinch of grief is one culprit who can steel our joy during the holiday season. Some have experienced a death of a family member this year or close friend, or maybe a pet. Some have a child who has joined the military or gone away to college and they have gone through the process of missing them; and for others...
One of the ways that I know California has been locked in an ongoing drought is that fact that I often dream about a winter and spring that are green and lush and verdant. It can seem hard to imagine now, but there are years when the Tehachapi Mountains are home to lots of seasonal creeks that are flowing with water, beautiful water. . . . The year 2011 was one of those years, when the rains and snows kept coming, recharging reservoirs, springs and aquifers. It seems so long ago now, but I remem...
If you receive Social Security, you've probably already heard that your checks in 2023 will be bigger – considerably bigger, in fact. How can you make the best use of this extra money? Here's what's happening: For 2023, there's an 8.7% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for Social Security benefits – the largest increase in 40 years. Also, the monthly Medicare Part B premiums are declining next year, to $164.90/month from $170.10/month, which will also modestly boost Social Security checks for...

For nearly 25 years, Mountain Music served the community as Tehachapi’s downtown music store. Even with the pandemic, it kept a presence downtown with a booth in the Treasure Trove, which is now the Arts Center. “I couldn’t leave the community without a place to buy reeds, strings, capos and other musical necessities,” said owner and founder Deborah Hand, who sat out the lockdown by writing books (available at the Arts Center) and plays. Now the store at 206 E. F St., Tehachapi, will be back in time for Christmas. The “elves” have been workin...
Father Joseph Mohr had journeyed to Oberndorf, a small town in Austria. It was his new assignment at St. Nicholas Church. He was a quiet, meditative man and a deep thinker. He could better put his thoughts down on paper than to express them orally. Still his sermons, carefully given and simply spoken, always had been quite acceptable by the congregation. As he walked over a recently fallen snow, he prayed his new parish would be a good one and he would serve the people well. He entered the...
'Tis the season for gift-giving, and if you're in the mood for finding some unique gift ideas, may I suggest Charlie Brown Farms in Littlerock, California? But note: Charlie Brown's is much more than just a gift shop – it's a great little day trip destination. I was casting about for something to do the other day and out of the blue I realized I haven't been to Charlie Brown's for several years. I looked it up on the internet to make sure it is still there and sure enough, it is. So, off I w...
When it comes time to service your car, you need to find a good mechanic/technician. Whether it's regular maintenance, like an oil change, or a funny bump-squeak-rattle you need to have diagnosed, a trusted mechanic/technician is key. Here are some of the key qualities to look for in a mechanic/technician. Diagnostic skills A good mechanic/technician needs the skill to diagnose a problem when you bring in your car. You may have a pretty good idea of what's wrong so you can point them in the...
In October, when Tehachapi Martial Arts Center (TMAC) announced to their students that they were going to have a Toys for Tots box at the studio, young Alyssa Melendez, who had recently joined TMAC, announced that she was going to raise money for toys by collecting recyclables. She collected from friends, family and from her school and by Thanksgiving had raised $236 from recycling. Over Thanksgiving weekend, Alyssa went to Walmart and spent the entire amount on toys to take to TMAC. When she...
Venture into the higher elevations in the Tehachapi Mountains, about 5,000 feet and higher, and you will eventually encounter one of our most common conifers: the White Fir. These handsome trees have beautiful green foliage, a dense symmetrical appearance and a delicious, apple/citrusy aroma. They smell just like Christmas trees, because they are Christmas trees – the tree species that Santa most often leaves the gifts around are White Fir, Noble Fir, Douglas Fir and other members of the f...
California air quality affects Tehachapi drivers wherever we are. Many decades ago, people began to become aware of how air pollution negatively affects health. But what about the air inside your vehicle? Cabin air filters are now coming standard on most new vehicles since the 2000 model year. These filters clean the air in the passenger compartment. They can filter particles down to three microns, so that's good enough to clean out dust, pollen and most pollutants. If you suffer from...

I think this is a good time for a true Christmas story. I call it "Another Day in Paradise." For a lot of us the holidays are hard. I am one of them. I am divorced and my parents are "off planet." A few years back after the death of my father, I was hanging out in a local coffee house at night during the holidays. I usually saw a man wearing a Vietnam veteran's hat and he was always sleeping. I was concerned about him sleeping sitting up – that's not good for you. One time I saw him during t...

Originally, she was assigned to Los Angeles County's maximum security jail. She spent almost 15 years with LASD. She was promoted to Senior Deputy and oversaw a unit that...
Four of the nine dedicated Litter Loathers of Bear Valley Springs who showed up on Nov. 15 found a sunny, but cool and very windy day for picking up roadside trash on Bear Valley Road from the gate to Hwy 202. In fact, the conditions were so difficult that the section of Cummings Valley Road from the school to Hwy 202 had to be put off for better weather. The hard workers, which appear in the picture are (from top left) Mitch McDiffett, Shawn Smith, Greg Hahn and Greg Matheson. The hard workers...
The Tehachapi Community Theatre Association (TCTA) is thrilled to offer a final weekend package of performances, featuring two evening shows and two matinees of the much loved "A Christmas Story" by Jean Shepherd. The large cast remains super-excited to be performing in such a nostalgic and warmhearted family Christmas story, set in 1950s middle-America. The kids love experiencing the joy that comes from playing to nearly sell-out crowds. "Live theater is a gift of give-and-take shared on both...
