  • Let children lead you this season

    Nancy Bacon, Reverend|Dec 7, 2019

Dear Friends, This is the season to be led and influenced by little children. My grandson, Benji, is patiently waiting for some stranger to break into his house and bring presents because a baby was born many years ago. His home doesn't have a fireplace, so Benji's mama built one from cardboard for Santa to "slide" down the chimney and into their living room. Santa was the scariest person Benji met last year, so it's a wonder that he sits by his little fireplace eagerly awaiting this man's visit...

  • Landlords and trespassing

    Karen Drum-Sousa, Fair Housing advocate|Dec 7, 2019

Historically, Landlords and Tenants have been on opposite sides of the fence. Thankfully, the Fair Housing Laws define the rights of both, as well as all aspects of housing transactions from rental, sales, realtors, management companies, insurance, etc. This column is designed to bridge the gap between the two. Just because a landlord owns the property that does not give him/her the right to show up without notice. Most states, including California, have statutes that define when a landlord can...

  • Mutual Funds: Wading into the passive verses active debate

    Lance Patton|Dec 7, 2019

It's fairly difficult - even for professional investors - to consistently "beat the market." This realization led to the creation of index mutual funds, which are passively managed investment vehicles designed to match the performance of a particular market index by owning the same securities included in the index. Today there are hundreds of indexes and index funds tracking various types of assets.1 Still, index funds are not the only game in town, and there is plenty of discussion in the...

  • Captain Guy Gruters – Vietnam POW

    Cathy Hansen|Dec 7, 2019

I often receive emails that have familiar names attached and I am careful not to forward their addresses to anyone else. This particular email caused me to take notice and do a little research on the person who sent it originally. It was signed by Capt. Guy Gruters, along with some impressive quotes. It also gave his website – www.guygruters.net. My interest was piqued when I read he was a motivational POW speaker and an author of a book titled "Locked Up With God." Below are some of the q...

  • Watch your step – I wish I had!

During rehab it was further fractured and I had to have a second surgery on Nov. 13. I now have a top to bottom brace on the right leg and use a wheelchair for mobility going from bed to commode to chair. This is our world for the next several months. For Mike and I it is very difficult but doable. So many amazing people have stepped up to...

  • New rules for the Holidays

    Mel White|Dec 7, 2019

Here's another little gem from that prolific writer "Author Unknown" that came across my desk via email. I hope you take it to heart as I surely did, as these new holiday rules are sure to make for a really happy holiday season. To whit: "I hate this time of year," Author Unknown says. "Not for its crass commercialism and forced frivolity, but because it's the season when the food police come out with their wagging fingers and annual tips on how to get through the holidays without gaining 10...

  • Ghosts of Thanksgivings past

    Pat Gracey|Dec 7, 2019

"Over the river and through the woods to Grandmother's house we go. The horse knows the way to carry the sleigh through white and drifted snow." A charming children's song. A bit dated, also. No horse, no sleigh and if there were drifts of snow the roads would have been closed. Still, we would come to Grandmother's house and would enjoy not only a fine meal but seeing family and enjoying ourselves. Of course, the horsepower was in whatever car we were driving. I remember back when I still lived...

  • Jolabokaflod, Christmas Book Flood

    Mark Fisher|Dec 7, 2019

Yes, it's that time of year again. People in Iceland are preparing for the Jolabokaflod or the Christmas Book Flood. In Iceland, book publishing tends to focus on the end of the year. But almost everyone gets books for Christmas Eve and spends the evening reading. And I've seen books listed as good Hanukkah gifts as well. I still have books that I was given as Christmas presents after ... well an unspecified number of years. Just in time for all this holiday giving, the Friends of the Library's...
