The opening of the new Tehachapi Branch of the Kern County Library system at 212 South Green St. on Dec. 4 was a community celebration. The library is open Mon. and Wed. 11-7 p.m. , Fri. and Sat. 9-5 p.m....

  • Keeping your accounts and devices safe

    Greg Cunningham|Dec 9, 2017

During this busy Christmas season, it can be more important than ever to protect your personal information. Whether you're shopping online, making travel arrangements, Uber-ing (is that a word?) around a different city visiting family, your data can be attacked from different angles. While you can't control the security practices of major corporations (cough, Equifax, cough), you can minimize the chances of the bad guys getting your data. Here are some things you can, and should, check. Check fo...

  • White Christmas? Maybe.

    Pat Gracey|Dec 9, 2017

My memories of a white Christmas in Tehachapi are scarce although last year our diaries may have listed, "snow on Christmas Eve." Usually the weather is cold, crisp and clear. That was always a plus for me as traveling to Midnight Mass in a snow storm is not something I look forward to. Each Christmas we listen to Bing Crosby's vibrant tones wafting through most store intercoms about his dreaming of a white Christmas, but one cannot fail to notice that he was a California resident and Southern...

  • Lockheed F-104 and the GE J-79 Jet engine that powered it

    Cathy Hansen|Dec 9, 2017

My husband Al and I review our old photos on a regular basis and are always happy to see the pictures that jar our memories into remembering the exciting projects we have worked on in years gone by. This photo (below) shows Al installing the General Electric J-79 engine into a Lockheed F-104 Starfighter that he was hoping to build into a flyer. Ever since he watched Darryl Greenamyer set the absolute speed record in October 1977 at Mud Lake, Tonopah, Nevada, with the "Red Baron," Al decided...

  • Tehachapi Downtown better than ever

    Greg Garrett, Tehachapi City Manager|Dec 9, 2017

As we enjoy the holiday shopping season, I hope you're taking notice of our local 'Buy 1' initiative. It's a challenge of sorts from the City to our citizens to make the effort to purchase at least one gift this year from a local small business. We understand that buying every gift here locally might not be possible, but our economic development team feels like one gift is reasonable. Honestly, after discovering everything our local shops have to offer, you'll most-likely be able to find...

  • Changes in the works for TVRPD

    Pat Doody|Dec 9, 2017

When the TVRPD Board met on Nov. 28, they welcomed their new member Wes Backes who had been appointed by the city on Nov. 18. Backes and his family have been in Tehachapi for many years. He graduated from Tehachapi High School where he played football for Coach Denman. He is now a member of the Tehachapi Fire Department and stationed at the Valley and Curry station. The Board voted unanimously to take over the Tehachapi Gran Fondo from the City. The matter was due to come before the City...

  • Christmas past and present

    Edna McCallion|Dec 9, 2017

We will compare today's Christmas meal with the celebratory feast that Christ and his loved ones might have eaten. It will be interesting to see the comparative use of herbs and spices as well as the foods and preparation techniques. Pretend it is 25AD and you are in Israel about to attend a festive meal where Jesus is the honored guest. Since the host is wealthy you will enjoy a great variety of foods. Servants are the doers of the meal. Breads are made from wheat. The unleavened is fried...
