Some people need to ease into a holiday mood in order to embrace all the trimmings. I just jump right in and immediately enjoy it all. The lights, the music, the overwhelming number of Hallmark movies. I especially enjoy the books. I first turn toward the classics. "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens remains a world treasure as the story of miserly Ebenezer Scrooge (first published in 1843) survives numerous re-writings and performances, on both stage and big screen, by many actors over the...
Real estate investment trusts (REITs) can offer a consistent income stream that is typically higher than Treasury yields and other stock dividends (see chart). A qualified REIT must pay at least 90% of its taxable income each year as shareholder dividends, and unlike many companies, REITs generally do not retain earnings, which is why they provide higher dividend yields than most other stock investments. You can buy shares in individual REITs, just as you might buy shares in any publicly traded...

Central Valley Assemblyman Vince Fong issued the following statement regarding the announcement by Representative Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) as he moves onto the next chapter: “Speaker Kevin McCarthy served the Central Valley, the State of California and our country with distinction, striving to make our community and nation better. “Through our decades of friendship, I’ve seen his commitment and his sacrifice – always optimistic and unafraid of the hard work necessary to create more opportunities for all Americans. “I am grateful to Kevin for...
The Maturango Museum in Ridgecrest is a little gem in the desert. I typically get to visit the museum a couple of times a year; my most recent trip was this last October on a sunny but not too warm fall day. And as usual, while there, I always see something new. This time, to my delight, the new things I saw were in fact, new things. More artifacts and other additions in the outdoor garden display, and of course the latest art display in the galleries. Founded in 1962 with a mission "to...

It was a dark and gloomy night before Christmas in 1975. This was going to be the first Christmas as a married couple and his family was having a family reunion. We were short of funds, and I had decided to put my craft and sewing skills to use to make all the presents. The most important skill I should have employed was time management because the day before Christmas I still had the finishing touches and wrapping to do. I had planned on leaving work early but due to issues I ended up staying...

I had been married to my Marine a whopping 17 months when he received orders in 1951 that he would be sent to Korea for a year. This was during the "Korean Conflict" which is what they called the war they had going over there. I found it difficult to imagine a whole year without him. My baby son, 8 months old, and myself had no choice but to come home to Tehachapi. Uncle Sam's allotment did not cover the expense of maintaining an apartment for the two of us. My parents were happy to have us....

"In 1876 the Debating Society of Tehachapi was organized with Charles McVicar, the President, and Simon Alexander, the Secretary. Debates were held each week, and a newspaper correspondent hoped that, because of such organizations, instead of Tehachapi being regarded as 'that rough place,' outsiders would realize that the citizenry had a 'taste for literature and moral sentiment.'" – William Harland Boyd...

"The southern Sierra, the Tehachapis, the Coast Ranges, and the Mojave Desert all come together in a welter of canyon and ridge, where we find interesting and peculiar plant assortments. Valley Oaks (Quercus lobata), of all things, have crept through Tehachapi Pass to the desert edge where they grow with Joshua Trees and cactus." – Elna Bakker Elna Bakker was a pioneering naturalist and cartographer who wrote the influential book An Island Called California, published by the University of C...

The project, when complete, could contain up to 995 single and m...
The sight of Common Ravens harassing and chasing a Red-tailed Hawk, or songbirds in turn pestering a raptor or a raven is a common seen in the Tehachapi area, and I'm often asked about the dynamics of these seemingly mismatched conflicts. People wonder: why do the bigger or more formidable birds fly away from the smaller birds that are harassing them? The first thing to understand is that mature ravens pair-bond for life, and they maintain a territory year-round. When you see a group of smaller...
