  • Miracle on 34th Street (1947)

    Nicholas Tanaka, contributing writer|Dec 18, 2021

My name is Nicholas Tanaka. I fell in love with movies and studied film in college, but due to my age, I haven't seen many of the classics. I've decided to go back and watch the films that have formed our movie landscape today, and view them with a modern lens. An absolute classic (written and directed by George Seaton), centered around the real Kris Kringle, who finds himself with a job at the retail giant Macy's as a parade and mall Santa. This Santa runs into a busy professional single...

  • Santa Claus in Bear Valley Springs

    Therese Luther, staff writer|Dec 18, 2021

Bear Valley Springs is a great place to live and it is the only area in all of Greater Tehachapi with its own Santa Claus! BVS has Jorge Melendez and his brilliant imagination to thank as well as his exceptional supervisor, Karolyn Hartmann, for the last several years of gatehouse decorations for various holidays and for their own private Santa. Jorge and his wife, Elizabeth (his "Princess Charming" as he calls her), moved to Bear Valley Springs about six years ago with their daughter, Alyssa,...

  • Big plans, tiny trailer

    Tanya Joham, staff writer|Dec 18, 2021

I recently went through the McDonald's drive-thru near the corner of Valley Blvd. and Tucker Rd. in Tehachapi. As I emerged I saw a T@B Sofitel teardrop camper hitched to an ordinary car (not a truck), parked with the driver standing nearby, apparently stretching his legs. As a tiny house enthusiast and an admirer of all things mini, I was intrigued. I rolled down my window and called out to the man, "How do you like your little trailer?" "I love it!" he called back. "Do you want to take a look...

  • Seventh-day Adventist Church mortgage burning celebration

    Tanya Joham, staff writer|Dec 18, 2021

On December 4, the Tehachapi Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church officially celebrated the fact that they paid off their mortgage and now own their property and buildings outright. They actually paid off the mortgage last year, but as we all know, 2020 was a pretty tumultuous year and many celebrations were cancelled or postponed. Before the Tehachapi SDA Church was established, Seventh-day Adventists from Tehachapi drove to Mojave to meet and fellowship. But in 1985, they began meeting at the Co...

  • Alano Club's sober New Year's Eve party

    Tanya Joham, staff writer|Dec 18, 2021

The Tehachapi Mountain Alano Club had a very successful Thanksgiving dinner and marathon meeting event. According to Alano Club president Jim Walker, "It was beautifully decorated" and "very well attended." The food was good and plentiful and the spirit of recovery and thankfulness was alive and well. Too often for alcoholics and addicts, the holidays from Halloween through the New Year festivities are fraught with isolation, temptation and sadness. That's why it's so important to have a way to...

  • Edison updates Rotary on PSPS

    Pat Doody, staff writer|Dec 18, 2021

Cal Rossi from Southern California Edison (SCE) spoke to Tehachapi Rotarians at their December 9 meeting. His territory covers an area from Bakersfield to Mammoth and includes Kern, Inyo and Tuolumne counties. Rossi began by thanking the...

  • Prop 68 new park and community center grant

    Corey Torres, District Manager|Dec 18, 2021

It is with heavy hearts that we announce that TVRPD’s application to bring a new park and community center to Tehachapi was not awarded funding. This was an extremely competitive statewide grant. There were 468 project applications, totaling $2.42 billion in requests with $548.3 million available. Over the last two years, I have had the privilege and opportunity to dream, shoot for the moon, and fight for a chance to bring resources to Tehachapi that would grow and expand our services and facilities. In the position I hold, I feel that it is m...

  • Christmas lights

    Mel White, contributing writer|Dec 18, 2021

One of my favorite parts of the winter holiday season is driving around town after dark and seeing all the Christmas lights and decorations on people's homes and yards, including, of course, decorated Christmas trees seen through house windows. Long ago my family used to always take part in this holiday tradition, usually starting to decorate our house the day after Thanksgiving, or sometimes not until the first weekend in December. Then around the middle of the month, especially if it was...

  • Christmas before Rudolph

    Pat Gracey, contributing writer|Dec 18, 2021

The first time I heard about Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer was in 1950. My Marine husband and I had been married eight months and were living in a Quonset Hut at Camp Pendleton. It was late November and Gene Autry, the cowboy movie star of that era, was on the radio singing his heart out about the latest addition to Santa's transportation system. I know Autry owned a baseball team (the L.A. Angels) but he must have had a large interest in the radio station too, for his voice and that song came...

  • Helen McAllister

    Judith Campanaro, contributing writer|Dec 18, 2021

"Nobody does me better than me." – Eddie Van Halen I first met Helen McAllister at a Spirit Wind meeting at the local Community Church and we have been friends ever since. Helen isn't just your average senior lady. She is a conglomerate of resilience with a strong core of beliefs and a skeleton of steel, coated over with talent and wisdom that just drips off her. She continually gives back to the community, always thinking of others and taking no credit for herself. She doesn't speak of her a...

  • Maximum 'wow factor' at Plane Crazy Saturday

    Cathy Hansen, contributing writer|Dec 18, 2021

The November Plane Crazy Saturday had a maximum "wow factor!" Meghan Salzman gave a concise and informative presentation about the incredible Build-A-Plane project, sponsored by the Tehachapi Society of Pilots. Many of the sponsoring mentors, all experienced aerospace professionals, were in the audience to encourage this exceptional young woman, who displayed an inspiring appearance of self-confidence and knowledge, although she had never addressed a group of people before. "I began attending...

  • James Walker Crowe: From Guantanamo Bay to the War in Afghanistan

(Note: This is the twenty-eighth article in a continuing series about local military veterans and their service to our great country.) His father, David, teaches history at Tehachapi High School; his mother, Lara, taught English at the high school and other locations through 2020. As a youngster, James worked for neighbors cleaning horse stalls,...

  • Train horns

    Ed Gordon, contributing writer|Dec 18, 2021

Toot, toot! Ever wondered about all those loud horn blasts as the trains come through Tehachapi? The four blasts as they approach an intersection or other series of toots before they move from a standstill? Those horn blasts are part of the General Code of Operating Rules for the railroad and are sounded for safety reasons. Whistles are sounded to attract attention to the train. They are also used as signals to railroad personnel and to the public or livestock on the tracks that a train is...

    Dec 18, 2021

Whether your holiday list includes a new television, computer, washer or dryer or gaming console – take note. Safety may not be at the top of your list, but it’s one of the first things you should think about when purchasing big-ticket electronic devices. Here are a few electrical safety tips to consider: • Unplug your electrical items by grasping the plug firmly rather than pulling the cord. • Check that your electrical items are certified by a nationally recognized testing laboratory. • Never remove the third prong on an electrical appliance...

  • Bakersfield National Cemetery unveils Avenue of the Flags

    Tanya Joham, staff writer|Dec 18, 2021

On Dec. 8, the Bakersfield National Cemetery Support Committee unveiled the Avenue of the Flags, 44 new American flags and flagpoles lining the gently curving road leading to the Upper Assembly Area of the cemetery and also sweeping down away from it. It's a graceful circular drive, lined with stately and gorgeous ceremonial flags. Dick Taylor, president of the Support Committee, stood in front of five rather impressive military branch insignia pillars and addressed those gathered including...

  • What Child is This?

    Midge Lyndee, Book Review|Dec 18, 2021

Just a glance at the words “What Child is This?” and immediately the melody of “Greensleeves” starts playing in my head along with the Christmas words about the baby Jesus. The lyrics were written in 1865 by William Chatterton Dix and set to the tune of “Greensleeves,” which was a traditional English folk song at the time, in 1871. The song itself has British origins, but is much more popular in America, perhaps due to its familiar tune. “Greensleeves,” a broadside ballad, was first known as...
