Teresa and Christopher Carlson of Papa's Pizza in Stallion Springs, worked tirelessly (in the photo to the right, you can see how we knew Christopher was making pizza) preparing a sampling of their cuisine for friends and family Wednesday evening, Dec. 16, at their new second restaurant in Downtown Tehachapi. Pizzarami, the new eatery on the corner of Tehachapi Blvd. and Curry St. (160 W Tehachapi Blvd.), opened Friday Dec.18, featuring a variety of pizzas, pastrami and appetizers. Beer and...
Shopping for a home loan isn’t fun. You hear a bunch of numbers and aren’t really sure how to make sense of it all. Have another look at my website article “Comparing Loan Offers” if it interests you. Here is some practical advice to weigh competing offers to see which one is the better deal. As an example, one lender might end up with a bottom-line monthly payment quote for $1168 per month, at a cash-to-close figure of $5400. Lender B might quote $1206 per month after spending $3800. Assuming y...
Now retired, Jim and Judy Spina have come to Tehachapi from Turlock, California, in the company of their six year old yellow Labrador Retriever, Sophie. They have always liked small towns and had been in Turlock for 15 years. When I asked what brought them to Tehachapi, the answer was simple –most of their grandchildren live in Bear Valley Springs. Jim is a retired sales representative. He worked for a food broker for 35 years before he retired. He was born in Portland, Oregon, and has a brother...
Looking back at the Ghosts of Christmas Past can rake up memories that can warm the heart and will stay with one, always. Sometimes those same memories involved adjusting to fit the plans of family members who gather for the wonderful day. Good food, laughter and lots of new memories being made. Perhaps you can sense I’m setting up for some extenuating circumstances in those Christmas memories that sort of “strain” the yuletide cheer. Only a tiny bit. When our marriage was young and we only had...

Effective July 1, 2016, the City of Tehachapi and the Tehachapi Police Department will terminate their dispatch contract with Bear Valley Springs Community Services District. In a 5-0 vote, the Tehachapi City Council voted to end the contract with the Bear Valley CSD that has been in effect since 2007 when the Tehachapi Police Department was reestablished. When the contract began, the Tehachapi Police Department paid approximately $277,000 annually with a 5% annual increase. However, by 2014...
Living in a mountainous area such as Tehachapi lends itself to being able to enjoy outdoor activities. One of the many activities that people enjoy here is hiking. As most of you know, the Pacific Crest Trail runs just east of Tehachapi through the windmills and north of Hwy 58, through the eastern Sierras. On occasion, when hikers come into town to take a break from their long trek on the trail, I will get a call to work on someone's painful heel. This brings us to the subject of Plantar...
Have a Heart Humane Society if offering free dog training classes to 20 lucky Tehachapi kids beginning this January. Local dog training expert, Rosemary Evans, will be conducting the classes. Each class consists of two sessions, the first one covering things dogs need to thrive and be happy such as proper nutrition, exercise, training, attention and love. During the second session, kids will be invited to bring their family dog and learn some simple tricks and play some crate games. Classes...
Have you been to see the newest Star Wars sequel yet? I can’t wait. I was blown away when these movies made their debut. The action and images were entrancing, and there was something so simple yet important about the plot…a small bunch of righteous “rebels” against a huge monstrous mega-power with the likelihood of success slim at best. Who doesn’t love a courageous, impossible, underdog story? That’s a classic as old as time, yet still relevant today. We continue to cheer for ancient bib...
There are many legends about herbs and the roles they played in the Christmas story. We will explore some of these charming tales in this column. I hope they will add a new dimension to your festivities and a special connection with past celebrants. Herbs that are linked to the Nativity story are often called "manger herbs". Rosemary (rosmarinus officinalis) was silent underfoot as the Holy Family traveled. The soft leaves muffled the crackling twigs underfoot thus preventing detection and...
Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) or lupus is an inflammatory auto-immune disorder that can affect any body part or only one or a combination of body parts. For example, SLE may harm joints, heart, kidneys, lungs, skin, blood vessels or even the nervous system. While lupus is incurable and can be fatal, it can most often be treatable. Unfortunately, the disease course is often unpredictable because of alternating periods of exacerbation and remission. Some of the symptoms of lupus are severe...
Happy Holidays, but beware. Stallion Springs Police Chief Mike Grant warns you to look out for scams and fraud at this time of year. Check your bank and credit card accounts on a regular basis. You may want to look into Identity Theft protection. There are several companies that offer different levels of protection for relatively little money. Be sure to report scams or fraud to the police department so they can follow up on the issue. If you are a Stallion Springs resident and believe you may...
Open enrollment for the Affordability Care Act (ACA) or, as it is more popularly known, Obamacare, continues until Feb. 1, 2016. But since we’ve passed Dec.15, any changes you want to make now will start Feb.1. That said, though, there are a few things I’ve learned that I’d like to pass on to you. The first, although it’s quite self-serving, don’t take this on by yourself. Find a qualified agent or broker to take it on for you. There are some real subtleties that can cause you to be required...
If you’re a penny pincher but your spouse is penny wise and pound foolish, money arguments may frequently erupt. Couples who have opposite philosophies regarding saving and spending often have trouble finding common ground. Thinking of yourselves as two sides of the same coin may help you appreciate your financial differences. Heads or tails, saver or spender If you’re a saver, you love having money in the bank, investing in your future, and saving for a rainy day. You probably hate credit card...
I still smile at the memory of hearing the three-year-old's voice as he stated, "My toppings are falling." Even knowing the context fails to remove my amusement. John's voice was almost filled with desolation yet it soon changed to one of glee. How? By simply realizing the sheer deliciousness of soft caramel filled with M&Ms, sprinkles and bits of chocolate. Yes, we were making our annual caramel apples. His mom of course – totally OCD as she can be with all things domestic – had all the top...
Emergencies drivers may encounter can range from a flat tire in downtown to being stranded in a snowy ravine for three days. So you may want to consider a basic car emergency kit to keep in your vehicle at all times and a travel kit tailored to a specific trip. Your close-to-home kit would have some basic items to work on your car: everything you need to change a tire, gloves, a couple of quarts of oil, some antifreeze and water. A can of tire inflator is a great temporary fix for minor flats. You’ll also want jumper cables or a booster box, f...
