I remember December 31, 2016, New Year's Eve. Father Time, old 2016 made an effort to throw the weather book at us and surely did. Starting with sunshine, then dense fog, then rain and finally snow, he went out in a fit of madness. Guess he didn't want to leave. It gets one to thinking about days gone by sometimes decades. Our brain is a wonderful filing cabinet for episodes from our lives that can be called up at will. We see kids today completely engrossed in their smartphones that can take...
Aviation enthusiasts everywhere know there are some very important dates to remember in the month of December. At 10:35 a.m., on December 17, 1903, Orville Wright made history by flying a powered machine into full flight at Kitty Hawk, N.C. This year marks the 106th anniversary of that famous flight. During the 1890s, sometimes known as the decade of the bicycle, the Wright brothers developed a successful business of bicycle repair. They happened onto an article in a magazine about Otto...

On Dec. 10, Second District Supervisor Zack Scrivner asked Kern County CAO and Director of Planning and Natural Resources to address the recent moves by Governor Newsom against the Kern County Oil Industry. Supervisor Scrivner characterized the Governor’s recent moves as an attack and said, “The constant attack on our oil industry continues to erode our fiscal stability and our way of life in Kern. The Governor is failing us and the Central Valley. The arrogance and hypocrisy of this Administration to deny Californians access to our own nat...
Holidays are a tough time for some people, for a variety of different reasons, and I have been one of those people. But through the years I’ve actually developed a fondness for finding new ways to celebrate, new traditions to enact, new memories to be made. For 54 of my years on this planet, I only missed two Christmases with my birth family. Through my high school days my family always managed to have Christmastime with both sets of grandparents and a special day or two with a close aunt and un...

In my Dec. 7 article, I mistakenly referred to Jennine Gillispie’s mother as Wendy. Jennine’s mother was Carol Swingley and Wendy managed the store for her. Also, while her store is normally open Thursday through Sunday, she will be open daily until Dec. 31. My sincere apologies to Jennine for these errors. If you have moved to Tehachapi within the last six months, Hilltop Welcoming Service has a bag of information about the Greater Tehachapi area, its activities, events, government and fac...

For years, public schools have had a couple of options for collecting online donations for specific classroom needs, such as www.DonorsChoose.com and www.AdoptaClassroom.org. Unfortunately, Christian schools are not allowed to use these platforms because both sites focus solely on public school needs. There is a great need for outside donations for Christian schools to help with classroom supplies and activities. The majority of religious schools function on a limited budget and receive no government funding. Parents must budget beyond taxes...

Are you ready for your Administrative Law Judge hearing? Most people have no idea what the judge is looking for. Here are some helpful hints: 1. Tell all your doctors about all your symptoms. If you have depression and you go to your primary doctor for a referral to a specialist, fill out a health questionnaire, and check NO, you do not have any mental health problems; it makes you look less believable. 2. Tell all your doctors about all your symptoms. Social Security disability is a system base...
