I know I'm a nag. I nag because it's so important to plan now for your family when you die. It's not that we plan to fail, we fail to plan. So what happens to your children when they inherit the family home that is in a trust? A step-up in basis resets the cost basis of an inherited asset to its market value on the decedent's date of death. Example with a trust: Dad dies and has a house that is owned by a revocable trust. He bought the house for $100,000 in 1970 and transferred it to his trust....

The site, located at www.news.kern.org, was established as a venue to better connect Kern County's 46 school districts, charter schools and KCSOS programs with the larger community. But the change in seasons brings about a varied response in the different living things that call this area home. Some opt for a strategy called snow avoidance, in which they simply try to not experience snow or freezing temperatures. This includes virtually all the reptiles and...
It's fun to grow ornamental plants that both thrive in your garden and can be harvested from time to time. This is the case with a California native known as White Sage or Grandfather Sage (Salvia apiana). This hardy plant has attractive gray-green or white-green leaves that contain very aromatic resins. It was used by many different Native American tribes to make smudge sticks or medicine bundles, which serve the same purpose as incense sticks. The leaves are picked off and then wrapped into a...

This year a seventh wreath was placed in honor of the 93,129 U.S. servicemen listed as MIA/POW. Following the National Anthem, sung by Marcus Coats, Mistress of Ceremonies Lynn Eckert of American Legion Post 221 introduced guest speaker, Sam McEwen. Local groups involved in the ceremonies were 5150...
