  • April wildflower drives

    Mel Makaw, contributing writer|Apr 13, 2024

It's finally April and that means wildflower season. I'm hoping for a super bloom close to home this year, thanks to all the rain we've had this winter. Of course, you never know – it takes a combination of elements to make a very good year, including temperatures and wind, as well as rainfall, and they must all line up at the right time and in the right order. But no matter what, whether a super bloom or not, we're sure to see a variety of wildflowers this spring. In the lower elevations, l...

  • What's Up in Bear Valley Springs?

    Linda Coverdale, contributing writer|Apr 13, 2024

One thing this community offers in abundance is dance opportunities. On Wednesday and Sunday evenings in the Oak Branch Saloon, line dancing takes place from 6 to 8 p.m. The beauty of line dancing is that you do not need a partner. You can just get out on the floor and dance. And dancing is good for the brain. Sunday nights are for more advanced dances. Wednesdays, on the other hand, some instruction is involved if you come across a dance you don’t know, or if you are just beginning. Swing dancing appeals to many. It does require a partner, a...

  • Anselmo – a vaquero

    Pat Gracey, contributing writer|Apr 13, 2024

In the early 1800s, the entire San Joaquin Valley of Central California was populated by the Native Americans of that region. The larger portion of the population were Yokut, but there were a significant number of alternate tribes in the area. The Gold Rush and the influx of settlers and miners were to inevitably displace the natural residents of the area. It was not to the Native Americans' advantage as there was bloodshed and broken treaties. The resistance continued for decades with...

  • Pogonip: a rare weather condition comes calling on cold nights

    Jon Hammond, contributing writer|Apr 13, 2024

This winter and spring we've had the good fortune to have an average amount of precipitation, about 11.5 inches worth of rain and snow. And though we have had snow, it was a pretty mild winter without exceptionally low temperatures, so we had almost no examples of an unusual weather condition called pogonip. The word pogonip is derived from a Shoshoni word for this phenomena, and it refers to what is basically frozen fog that forms on exposed surfaces during very cold, windy nights. The result...

  • Simply Perfect holiday gift ideas

    Mike Scotti, contributing writer|Mar 16, 2024

"Someday, I'm going to open a gift shop!" I would declare this each time I left a gift shop during retail therapy sessions with my friends. Fast forward to retirement in late 2019, after 20 years of teaching first, second and third graders only to be isolated by COVID-19. Although I had family close by, the pandemic made it difficult to cultivate new friendships and experience all that Tehachapi has to offer. Once the city began to reopen, an opportunity presented itself where my son's tour...

We have definitely been in the rainy season. All’s good, though, as we should have a very vibrant spring. The valley has recently lost one of our community citizens. Miles Coverdale passed on Jan. 27. He was known for his years of weed-whacking roadsides, and also for his videos of our valley, covering the amenities, and, even more significantly, our fragile water delivery system. Kudos to CSD Vice-President, Martin Hernandez and the Board. VP Hernandez introduced a proclamation requesting that Bear Valley Springs be designated a Purple H...

He asked if he could put my phone number and name on his phone message that would indicate that he was retiring. I told him that it would be okay, and that I would do my best to take care of his customers. I told him that I...
