  • Old enough to vote

    Pat Gracey|Sep 12, 2015

Sometimes one finds themselves doing things that make people say, “Why would you want to do that?” For instance, I, not long ago decided to memorize, in chronological order, our forty-four presidents. . . and I did it. I sort of had a headstart for I was born when Calvin Coolidge was President. Old “silent Cal” was famous for metering out his spoken words as if he had to pay for each of them personally. Of course, I was never aware of his term of office as Herbert Hoover was sworn in as Preside...

  • Letting go sets us free

    Chris A Paschke, on behalf of TCT|Aug 29, 2015

The Miracle Worker opened Friday, August 28, for a three week run through September 13. It's the story of Annie Sullivan (played by Elaine Chilcoat), a young visually-challenged teacher who, although haunted by her own past, reaches into the dark, quiet world of her pupil and opens the world up to her through language, friendship and love. It's also the story of a family who learn that by letting go-not only of Helen, but of their own fears-they, too, are set free. David Steele Reed is the...

  • Summer Stroll around Downtown – Share a glimpse into the past

    Pat Gracey|Jul 18, 2015

Before this goes to press the Heritage League will have already sponsored what they called "a Summer Stroll", which in actuality, will have consisted of a group of people "strolling" from one location to another with a Heritage League member stopping and giving a bit of history of a few local sites. The Stroll will have started at the Depot where a short orientation took place before the leisurely walk began. I would not be on the walk itself but stationed at a prescribed location, however, I...

  • Part II - Early history at a glance

    Pat Gracey|Apr 25, 2015

I left you in the early days of the Twentieth Century in “nineteen ‘aught’ nine.” That’s the way the old timers said those early years. They called zeroes “aughts” in those days. Sometimes “naughts” too. 1909 - The City of Los Angeles Cement Company was established four miles east of Tehachapi. An aqueduct was needed to provide Los Angeles with water from the Owens Valley. They closed the plant down after the project was finished. For a time it produced Potash; not to make cement again unti...

  • 'A Night to Remember'

    Feb 14, 2015

It’s often true that parents and their offspring have different ideas about what constitutes “good music”. Perhaps I lucked out, having grown up with Gary Mazzola and Joy Gray, both talented songwriters and musicians, as parents. Music was something personal, made right there in our home. Some of my earliest memories include the harmony of their voices, the strumming of guitars and their creative lyrics. While I can’t speak for how they may have felt about some of my music choices growing up, I feel privileged to say that the music they ma...
