The case of the Tehachapi-Cummings County Water District vs. the City of Tehachapi is scheduled for a mandatory settlement conference on Nov. 3 at 10 a.m. The remote meeting, involving all parties, is not held in court. "We want to get it resolved," water district Manager Tom Neisler told The Loop. "We laid out our case in 40 pages." The "40 pages" is Superior Court of California County of Kern Case No. BCV 21-102184, a petition for writ of mandate that seeks to set aside the Environmental...
One of Kern County's most strategically important fire stations is the little-known Keene Fire Station, located just off Highway 58 in the sleepy community of Keene, nestled in the Tehachapi Mountains. Kern has 48 different fire stations given numbers between 11 through 79, starting with Station 11 at Keene. So why would Station 11 be so significant, given that Keene itself is home to only a couple of hundred people at most? Because Keene is one of the main wildland firefighting stations, with t...
During the 2020 pandemic a small group of high school juniors started their own organization, Teens with a Purpose. This is their umbrella organization for many cause-driven projects. Layla Lujan, 2020 Tehachapi Citizen of the Year with her brother Milo, and her friend Trinity Madden, a local beauty queen, organized Teens with a Purpose in April of 2020. Teens with a Purpose is a volunteer-based platform designed to inspire children of all ages to be more active in their community. It is the...
Did you know there are about 20 different species of wild cats that can be found in Kern County? Only two of them, mountain lions and bobcats, are native to this area, but you can see these two as well as snow leopards, fishing cats, jaguars, servals, caracals, ocelots, Canada lynx, margays, jaguarundis and more in a shady oasis only 30 miles from Tehachapi at Rosamond's Feline Conservation Center. Kern County holds many surprises, and one of them is this remarkable sanctuary, formerly known as...
As the West in general, and California, of course, experience another devastating wildfire year in 2021, it reminds me of terrible fire that we had 10 years ago. One of the most destructive wildfires that ever swept through the Tehachapi Mountains struck in September of 2011, destroying 32 residences and 30 outbuildings, as well as 19 cars and trucks and 19 RVs as it burned its way through 14,585 acres. Started by a Sept. 4 plane crash that killed both occupants of a small Cessna, the blaze was...

Sometimes it's interesting to read little timelines listing events of many years ago. I don't really live in the past, but it's interesting to find out what people were doing in this little valley when Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, Ben Franklin and "the rest of the boys" were signing the Declaration of Independence in 1776 back on the east side of the country, as well as including a couple of hundred other years, just for fun. 1776 – Padre Francisco Garces traverses Tehachapi Pass with f...

The railroad through the Tehachapi Mountains, completed in 1876, is a vital thoroughfare for freight traffic. In fact, the Tehachapi line is considered to be the busiest section of single track mountain railroad in the world. While all the traffic is freight now, for the first nearly 100 years of the railroad's existence, there were daily passenger trains that passed through Tehachapi. It was one of these passenger trains that suffered the worst transportation disaster in Tehachapi history on a...

(Note: This is the 17th article in a continuing series about local military veterans and their service to our great country. It is also the second article focusing on World War II. Like Bill Jasper and Henry Martinez [February 13, 2021 issue of The Loop], Mr. Hubbard took part in stopping the massive last-ditch German offensive on the Western Front that began in December 1944, and which is commonly known to Americans as the Battle of the Bulge.) Emery Hubbard was inducted into the military on De...

Last year at about this time Claudia White, the publisher of The Loop newspaper, asked me to write my column about rattlesnakes. Now that warmer weather has come back and reptiles have begun to stir, she thought it would be appropriate to revisit the topic. The Tehachapi Mountains are primarily home to one species of rattlesnake: the Northern Pacific rattlesnake (Crotalus oreganus oreganus). This snake typically has a basic "ground color" that matches their surroundings, and may be light brown,...

So many historical aircraft have been tucked away in hangars at Mojave Airport through the years. In 2003, this genuine Messerschmitt Bf 109E, Werke Number 3579 was in Hangar #77 (the same hangar that housed the Voyager Aircraft in the 1980s). The Bf 109 was recovered near St. Petersburg, Russia in 1991 and was fully restored to flying condition, complete with WWII instruments, for the Santa Monica Museum of Flying. The restoration was completed on the Isle of Wight, in the south of England. The...

It was 10 years ago that I was able to take a trip that once happened multiple times every day, but now is a very rare experience: a train ride through the Tehachapi Mountains and down to Bakersfield. Of course multiple trains a day still pass through Tehachapi. The rail line through here is considered one of the busiest stretches of single-track mountain railroad in the world, but they're all freight trains. After nearly 100 years of continuous operation, passenger train service was...
The largest non-profit nature preserve on the West Coast is located in Kern County, just a little more than an hour's drive from Tehachapi. This remarkable 95,000-acre place is called the Wind Wolves Preserve, and it serves as a crucial wildlife corridor to help connect two parallel mountain ranges. Wind Wolves Preserve is home to Tule Elk, mountain lions, bears, coyotes, deer, badgers and a host of other animals and birds, including the California Condor, one of the rarest birds in North...

With the arrival of the Winter Solstice on December 21, we're now officially in winter. So what kind of weather does Tehachapi get in January? And how cold can it really get? Well, the coldest temperature on record in the Tehachapi area occurred on the night of December 20, 1990. A brutal cold snap was expected, and it definitely arrived. I was up off and on during the night checking the weather, and I watched as the thermometer outside our kitchen window dropped each time I checked it: 5 degree...

The Tehachapi Humanitarian Relief Group was formed during the current COVID-19 pandemic to fill a need for food distribution and other services for Tehachapi's under-served. The group networks almost entirely through Social Media and were very active during the Christmas holiday. The group teamed up with Michelle Wattenbarger of the American Legion and the Coffee Mill to provide an angel tree. The Legion itself sponsored 20 families. A Google form was set up for families to sign up and the tree...
Nearly 200 local high school students put their knowledge of the U.S. Constitution to the test over the weekend with the annual “We the People” Congressional Hearings competition. Due to COVID-19, this year’s competition was held virtually. In the end, Centennial High School took home the victory in the regional competition. Centennial High will go on to represent Kern County in the state championships to be held virtually in February. The regional competition consisted of 10 Kern County high school teams competing for a chance to win eithe...
