Column time – what to write, what subject? My bi-weekly dilemma as I dig through my mother Marion Deaver's files to find a gem. I had found a couple of possible subjects and was ready to compose when I got a call from my brother Bill Deaver, who sent me an article he received from Mojave aircraft enthusiast Cathy Hansen. The X-15 – a test plane/spacecraft that flew 199 times and led the way for future space flights with research for the SR-71 Blackbird, the space shuttle, and the reusable spa...
It appears that the much talked about Tehachapi Park 'n' Ride project to be located on the north side of Tehachapi Blvd. between Mill St. and Pauley will become a reality. At the Aug. 21 City Council meeting, Development Services Director Jay Schlosser reminded council members that in August of 2015, they had directed City staff to pursue the Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) Program funds to construct the Park and Ride facility. The application was successful and the City will...
I have a confession to make. Either I am getting old(er) or I have been writing this column way too long – or both! When I began this venture, it did not occur to me that I should devise a plan to keep track of the materials from my mother, Marion Deaver, so that I would know whether I had written a column about it. At the time I just figured I would remember – after all – I was "not that old" at the time. I guess I never envisioned that I would still be doing this after several years. Yet h...
The American author Henry Miller once wrote, “Confusion is a word we have invented for an order which is not understood.” In Bear Valley Springs, as in any community, a certain amount of confusion is to be expected, yet too much is never a good thing. Sir Francis Bacon is attributed with the phrase “Knowledge is Power”. It dates back to 1597, and in 420 years that quote has stood the test of time. So, in an effort to create a more ‘powerful’ Bear Valley Springs (BVS), here are a few tidbits of knowledge that are often sources of confusion i...
The Greater Antelope Valley Economic Alliance held its quarterly meeting in Mojave recently so its members could get a current look at what is happening in East Kern County. In addition to reports given concerning the Golden Queen mine just south of Mojave, the Test Pilots School located on the Mojave Spaceport, and The Spaceship Company, Bill Deaver Vice President of the Mojave Spaceport Board of Directors, delivered an update on what is current at that facility. I chose to feature Deaver’s rep...
Have you ever wanted to write a song but didn't know where to start? Have you written songs and want to take them to the next level? Do you have a song you would like to record? Camp Kiya has offered songwriting classes in the past, but plans to have a full workshop this year. Kerry Patrick Clark and Peter Romano are returning to head up the program. They will be joined by Max Valentino, who will also teach bass, percussion and guitar, as in past years. Camp Kiya is a traditional music camp for...
Gun control – or not – has been a topic for the ages. In the late 1960s the East Kern area of the Mojave Desert was an area subjected to illegal shooting. Earlier in the decade was a period when some residents of the Los Angeles area would drive up to the desert to practice "quick draw" with their handguns holstered on their hips – and shoot themselves in the thigh or foot. (Thank you "Gun Smoke", "Have Gun Will Travel", etc.) Once they figured out that guns can cause pain – or even death – they...
I knew Mary Watts because she was a student at Tehachapi High School and was a classmate of my sister, Evelyn Davis, both graduates of Class of 1940. They were six years older than I so it was not until many years later that Mary and I actually became friends. The older one becomes, the more the age barriers are erased. I recall that Mary, during World War II, enlisted in the newly formed naval organization for women known as the WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service). She comes...
In November of 2014, the Tehachapi City Council earmarked several years of Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds towards improving and connecting the pieces of sidewalk on the north side of H Street across from the Union Pacific rail line and on the east side of North Green Street between H and J Streets (see map). Since that time, the city has been refining and designing the Northside Neighborhood Sidewalk project. The last step for starting the project is an agreement between the...
At the May 11 East Kern Economic Alliance meeting, Adventist Health president and CEO Charlotte Briggs spoke about the problems that the healthcare district has faced in getting the new hospital licensed and open. Thanks to the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD), many codes have changed since the beginning of construction and the hospital must meet all the codes before it can be licensed and "there is licensing for everything," she said. Most frustrating are the new...
“The more things change, the more they remain the same…” There are all sorts of sayings that confirm that though things seem to change and fads come and go, basics remain the same. In searching my mother Marion Deaver’s news files I found an article she wrote in November, 1969, lamenting the damage from vandals to historical sites in the desert area of Eastern Kern County. A tagger was caught and arrested recently in the Tehachapi area for leaving his little marks for all to see on other p...

Darrin Mason, head coach of the Tehachapi Mountain Bike Team, described Tehachapi's results as...
Come voice opinions on where transportation dollars are spent. Should Kern County fix local streets and roads or add more bike baths? Does public transportation need to be increased in our area? Is there a dangerous intersection you think could be improved? If you have opinions, the Kern Council of Governments wants to hear from you. The Greater Tehachapi Economic Development Council is teaming up with Kern COG to host a Tehachapi workshop and they need your opinions. “It’s all part of the pro...

In 1955 the Southern Kern County Union School District proudly announced that it had completed additions to its school and would dedicate its new buildings April 30, 1955. The additions included a new Kindergarten, four new classrooms, an administration building, cafetorium, and four new classrooms. The district was still a K-8 district in 1955 and high school students, along with other East Kern Districts, climbed on buses and were taken to Antelope Valley High School in Lancaster. Some were...
I found an article of my mom, Marion Deaver that she wrote in 1956. I know that because she actually wrote the year on it! If you read my column regularly you know I am always complaining and trying to guess the year she wrote something because she always cut the date off when she clipped her articles to save them. With that said, the article proclaimed that predictions made a few years earlier that the desert would be a new frontier was gradually coming true. She added that “the women of the d...
Camp Kiya, Tehachapi’s family traditional music camp, has been awarded a $1,000 grant from the Arts Council of Kern. The “Arts in the Community” grant was given for the scholarship program, which helps make the camp affordable to students and adults who would not be able to attend without some financial aid. Camp Kiya will take place July 23-27 this summer. The Arts Council of Kern – in partnership with the California Arts Council, the County of Kern and local agencies – provides, supports and promotes arts access, advocacy and education...

California City planners are reviewing 60 building permits submitted by medical marijuana growers who seek to build hydroponic facilities in the city "We want to get away from special taxes," Cal City Mayor Jennifer Wood said at the Mar. 9 meeting of the East Kern Economic Alliance at the Mojave Air and Space Port. "If this industry does it for us, that's it." She said that city personnel have researched the marijuana growing industry and visited facilities, and that city planners have been...
Another lake appears – Just as Surprise Lake in the lowlands of Bear Valley appears infrequently, a lake has arisen like Brigadoon in the lowlands of Sand Canyon (photo right). The lake is a catch basin built 50 years ago to irrigate potato crops at the bottom of the canyon. "That's the story I have heard, anyway," said Richard Cantrell of the Quail Valley Water District, which does not own the property or the lake. The lake got so high in the usually dry basin this year that water flowed o...
When everything about the Oroville Dam and Lake in Northern California started to go to “hell in a hand basket” two weeks ago, I remembered that my mom Marion Deaver rode on a train to that area in the late fifties to see the Feather River and hear about a dam. I searched high and low for an article that she probably wrote for the Bakersfield Californian concerning that trip and what did I find? Nada, zilch, nothing! Those articles must be in the infamous “lost boxes” that my brother Bill De...
“ The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization focusing on service to veterans, service members and communities. They evolved from a group of war-weary veterans of World War I into an influential non-profit organization in the United States.” I copied that from the Internet. But, what does it really mean? I grew up knowing that my father, a World War I veteran, was a member of the American Legion. He had served and was proud of his country and wou...
Our friend, Noel Dees, was the middle child of five children. He was born November 3, 1918 – eight days before the end of WWI, in Wirt, OK, an oil boom town. His father worked in the oil fields and the family came to Calif. in 1923. His Father worked for Shell Oil Co. and they first lived in LaHabra for almost a year, then moved to Brownsville, Tex. hoping for more money. After 10 months, the family was back in Calif., this time in Long Beach, but his father always liked Mojave and when Noel was...
