When everything about the Oroville Dam and Lake in Northern California started to go to “hell in a hand basket” two weeks ago, I remembered that my mom Marion Deaver rode on a train to that area in the late fifties to see the Feather River and hear about a dam. I searched high and low for an article that she probably wrote for the Bakersfield Californian concerning that trip and what did I find? Nada, zilch, nothing! Those articles must be in the infamous “lost boxes” that my brother Bill De...
“ The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization focusing on service to veterans, service members and communities. They evolved from a group of war-weary veterans of World War I into an influential non-profit organization in the United States.” I copied that from the Internet. But, what does it really mean? I grew up knowing that my father, a World War I veteran, was a member of the American Legion. He had served and was proud of his country and wou...
Our friend, Noel Dees, was the middle child of five children. He was born November 3, 1918 – eight days before the end of WWI, in Wirt, OK, an oil boom town. His father worked in the oil fields and the family came to Calif. in 1923. His Father worked for Shell Oil Co. and they first lived in LaHabra for almost a year, then moved to Brownsville, Tex. hoping for more money. After 10 months, the family was back in Calif., this time in Long Beach, but his father always liked Mojave and when Noel was...

It’s another new year. So I guess it’s time to tally up my score for last year. I think I did pretty well. As a writer I need to track where I submit things to and what the outcome is. I keep a database which makes it easy to count up some of my important statistics. I was rejected 64 times this last year. While it might seem odd that I’d lead off with my rejections, it’s not that unusual for a writer to remember them. JK Rowling was rejected 12 times before her books about Harry Potter were acc...
My mother Marion Deaver loved being a member of the Kern Antelope Historical Society and she made sure that she, my dad Paul, my brother Bill and I were all charter members of the group. The meetings were held each month and there was always a guest speaker. The part I enjoyed the most were the field trips that took us all over East Kern and once even to Fort Tejon to see history first hand. I found an article of my mom’s that she wrote about guest speaker Ruby Rogers, of Cantil. The meetings w...

Fall has arrived in all of Eastern Kern and of course Tehachapi, where the morning temperatures are a bit cooler than say, Ridgecrest. I was looking for stories about weather and actually found two articles that my mother Marion Deaver had written about desert weather. Of course we all know by now from reading my column that my mother never thought to include a date on anything she cut out to save. I believe the first article was from the early ‘60s as the community of Mojave sought to grow a...
I found a file marked Rosamond history that was marked in my mother Marion Deaver’s handwriting and it was a sort of mishmash of articles and handwritten notes. One article was written by Glenn Settle, Eastern Kern historian of sorts, and another was written out on typed sheets and I cannot make out the name on the return address. It looks like M. Kilchry, but I cannot be sure, and as always my mom did not include any dates on anything. Settle’s article seems to be from the early 1960’s, and the...
According to a recent press release from The AABB Interorganizational Task Force on Domestic Disasters and Acts of Terrorism, Hurricane Matthew has forced the cancellations of many blood drives along the Southeast coast of the U.S., impacting the nation's blood supply. The task force is urging eligible donors across America to give in the coming days and weeks to help meet these needs. "We are asking all potential donors, both current and first-timers, to roll up a sleeve and make a commitment...

The East Kern County economic diversification study currently being carried out by the Austin-based TIP Strategies has found that "location quotients" (LQ) by occupation show ratios of high-level jobs per geographical designation above those of the nation, state and Kern County as a whole. "Location quotients by occupation is one of the most exciting findings," TIP senior consultant John Karras said at a presentation to the East Kern Economic Alliance on Sept. 7, 2016 at the Rio Tinto plant...
Guild to the rescue – From the operation of its little thrift shop at 101 West E Street, the Tehachapi Hospital Guild through the years has provided hundreds of thousands of dollars in hard cash to purchase vital hi-tech equipment for the Tehachapi Hospital. Now the Guild has in excess of $675,000 in its bank account, and Adventist Health (soon to be the operator of the new hospital and clinics), with its big purchasing power and resources, doesn't really need those funds for equipment. As the R...
Mark your calendar! Saturday, Sept. 24, 2016. There will be signs all over Tehachapi pointing the way. If you and your family love to have fun with your dog, then the Gone to the Dogs Fun Run/Walk and Pet Festival is an event you don’t want to miss. Have a Heart Humane Society volunteers have been busy planning their annual Gone to the Dogs Fun Run/Walk and Pet Festival. Helping Tehachapi become a “pet friendly town” has been a goal of the organization’s board and of hundreds of pet owners. This event is geared to help achieve that goal. T...
If there were any serious objections to the proposed route of the California High-Speed Rail (HSR) track over the Tehachapi pass, the 45 people who attended the project community update July 20 in Tehachapi were pretty quiet about it. The single question from the audience following the HSR Authority presentation related to fire safety along the electric rail line. People got answers to their questions from a dozen project engineers and managers who fielded questions one-on-one in a relaxed...
This week I found an article in a 1957 copy of the Tehachapi News that had reprinted an article from the Fresno Bee in my mom’s files. The article was written by Leo Dollar, following a tour he took of the Tehachapi Valley’s seed industry. At that time Tehachapi was certified as one of the primary seedgrowing areas in the United States. Dollar wrote “This little mountain community, snugly bedded in a cool valley 4,000 feet above the San Joaquin Valley, is demonstrating for the agricultural world the old saying that good things come in small...

It seems that everywhere we look, we see the breakdown of society. Churches are often overwhelmed with the needs that are all around us these days. The DPER Life Center was developed to aid churches and the local community in meeting some of those needs. Dr. Kevin Belsby, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and his wife Jolene, a Certified Life Coach, founded DPER Life Center to offer affordable counseling for individuals, couples and families. They also work along side local churches and...
When I first moved to Bakersfield, California, from the Midwest, it didn't take me long to notice many big churches. My new neighbor told me the city is nicknamed "The Bible Belt West" due to Dust Bowl migrations from the southern Bible Belt. She invited our family to one of the big churches, assuring us that "everyone goes there." It certainly was a big congregation and the church had many bells and whistles. Yet, I wondered: How is it that the Central Valley has so many big, wealthy churches,...
It was time to paint my office at home since it had never been painted in the time I have lived there. This required me to go through old totes of photos, etc. that were above the closet that had not been seen for a long time. Their contents were mostly old photos of the kids and their school “stuff.” Then I found something of mine! I had saved a copy of the Enterprise Newspaper because it featured a photo of my daughter Meg on a “slip and slide” when she was seven. The photo allowed me to note...

On May 6, the Tehachapi Community Theater (TCT ) was given notice that they had been awarded $25,000 from the Spring Cycle grants awarded by The Bakersfield Californian Foundation. The foundation has a long tradition of giving back to Kern County through funding grants to a variety of local nonprofits. The $25,000 grant is to help with the funding of the expansion of the BeeKay Theater. Grant writers Douglas Jockinsen and Deborah Hand-Cutler couldn't be more pleased and proud. TCT is currently...
Recently I visited the Mesa Verde Detention Center in Bakersfield - the temporary forced residence of about 300 male and 100 female undocumented immigrants. While touring the facility and praying with inmates, I thought about biblical stories. Have you ever noticed how much of the bible tells about migration? People on a journey somewhere…up into the mountains, wandering in the wilderness, leaving one place and seeking a homeland. We are people in motion, all of us. Some with legal status to m...
Some residents in Bear Valley Springs and Stallion Springs who want to vote on Proposition H are not sure they can vote. The Tehachapi Valley Healthcare District encompasses all of the Tehachapi valleys and adjacent areas to the north and south, dips down into the Central Valley on the west side (at one point crossing Bear Mountain Road, or Hwy. 223) and extends down the east side into California City. Only residents who live within the boundary can vote on Prop H, the passage of which would...
