Before the rescue was established, all of these pets were sent to Kern County Shelters. While our facility is located at Edwards Air Force base, we do not receive any funding from the Air Force or the Federal governme...

California Assembly Bill 775, which is nearing a Senate vote and a likely party-line approval (Democrats for, Republicans against), would order all medically licensed pro-life pregnancy centers in the state to post a prominent sign telling clients how to get information on securing abortions. The law also would order non-medical pregnancy centers to post a sign in 48-point type (see sidebar) stating clearly that the facility does not provide medical care. The bill, backed by Planned Parenthood...

This mural was donated to the Mojave Transportation Museum Foundation on December 13, 2012, and it has been copyrighted. A picture truly is worth a thousand words! This mural tells the transportation history of Mojave and so much more. Mojave began in 1876 as a...
Water, water – Brite Lake, also known as the Tehachapi-Cummings County Water District Jacobsen Reservoir, is full to bursting. Shown above, the fishing dock (normally resting partially on land) floats beyond access. In planning for an extended drought, the district ran four wells into the reservoir earlier this year to supplement the imported water supply and began importing water in April as usual. “Then the rains came,” district General Manager John Martin said. While increasing the inflow to the lake, he said, the rain, hail and cold cause...

His talents for two wheels began with motocross from a young age, where he moved through the ranks to a local pro level. After racing motocross, bicycling became his main focus. He began competing in USA...
It is one of the most common questions we get here at the ranch. The answer varies with the critter, so I thought I would share a few stories with you all. I didn't start off with a lot of animals. I started with a couple of horses from a local humane society. I had always wanted a horse ever since I was a little girl, so this was a dream come true. When I moved to a larger property, I added a couple more horses. Then someone told me about a llama that needed a home. Then a pig. Then a couple of...
In 1987 I wrote a one hundred year history for St. Malachy Church Centennial commemoration. I found much material that I didn't need but did not wish to completely discard. I ended up making a time line for safe keeping. Each notation has volumes of history behind it but it's nice to get a glimpse of the "goings on" of the people who came before us. It extends from 1776 to 1987. Here is just a portion. 1776 – Padre Francisco Garces traverses Tehachapi Pass with four Mojave Indian guides. 1776 ...
OK, I’ll admit it…one of my guilty pleasures is an occasional grande skinny cinnamon dolce latte from Starbucks. I love Starbucks and I wouldn’t feel as much guilt if their coffee was Fair Trade, but the company does make impressive efforts to engage important soci-political issues. Their newest campaign, “Race Together” intrigues me. Discussing racial issues is tricky and I am wondering how my barista will get my fancy coffee order correct while juggling such a hot topic. My church began a c...

The Arts Council of Kern – in partnership with the California Arts Council, the County of Kern and local agencies – provides, supports and promotes arts access, advocacy and education...
"The wildflowers are blooming!" When my mother, Marion Deaver, exclaimed this on a weekend it meant we were headed for the desert to check out the wildflowers. My mom knew each of her favorite spots and which wildflowers would be blooming there in a year with "appropriate" rainfall. That meant that there would have to be fall rains to help the seeds germinate, and spring rains to bring them up and to bloom in all their glory. We would travel to "Nine Mile Hill", east of Mojave, to look for...
'It's a beautiful business.' – Brassard Isabelle Brassard, general manager of the Rio Tinto Boron operations, told the March 5, 2015 meeting of the East Kern Economic Alliance at the Borax Visitor Center that business is good. "Twenty-fourteen was a great year for us," said Brassard, a native of Montreal. "We are doing the right things to keep this business in good shape." The Boron plant produced more than a million pounds of borates, Brassard said, and at the same time decreased water c...
