  • Tehachapi Pays Its Dues as We Reach for the Stars

    Dale Hawkins|Nov 22, 2014

Tehachapians are on the front lines of the conquest of space. Many work at Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Edwards Air Force Base/NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center, Mojave Air and Space Port, or one of the many supporting activities in the area. We all share the thrill of success – and the agony of the setbacks. We lost one of our own when Michael Alsbury went down with SpaceShipTwo VSS Enterprise on Halloween Day. He left behind a wife and two young children. We must help them find lasting m...

  • Local Veterans Enjoy Visiting Local Airports

    Ed Sullivan|Nov 8, 2014

The September 27th Warbird Fly-in in Tehachapi gave Captain Ed Sullivan (Rt.) of Tehachapi the opportunity to escort his neighbor and World War II veteran, Joe Tays, on his first trip to Tehachapi Airport. The 93 year old survivor of Pearl Harbor said that he wanted to see his first air show and the neighbor was glad to oblige. The weather was cold, cloudy and windy, but that didn't deter the two men on their mission. Some may recall that Tays, who had been awarded four bronze stars, was recogni...

  • The Times I Saw Ronald Reagan

    Susan Wiggins|Nov 8, 2014

October 27, 2014 marked the 50th anniversary of the now famous speech delivered by Ronald Reagan at the Republican convention for the nomination of Barry Goldwater. Hearing that reminded me of the times that I had met Reagan, and I decided to write about those memories and others of my brother Mike Deaver, who worked for Reagan, both in California and Washington, D.C. We lost Mike in 2007, from pancreatic cancer. I saw Reagan at Edwards Air Force Base July 4, 1982, as he and First Lady Nancy...

  • Tehachapi Gandy Dancers Tour Edwards AFB

    Mrs Brenda Johnston|Sep 13, 2014

The Tehachapi Gandy Dancers recently toured Edwards AFB. First order of the tour was checking out the aircraft and tower on display at Century Circle. These aircraft known as the century aircraft stand in silent tribute to the Air Force of the past; the F-100, F-101, F-102, F-104, F-105, and F-106 Fighters. Also located at Century Circle is an YC-15 Transport aircraft. The tower display is the actual top portion of the old Edwards Flight Tour. Displayed in the window is a cardboard cutout of...

  • Meet Your New Neighbors

    Pat Doody, Welcome Hostess|Aug 16, 2014

Tom and Debbie Burgess moved from Bakersfield, Calif. into their new Bear Valley home in May, not too long before Tom’s June 30th retirement as Federal Probation Officer. He had worked at the Federal Courthouse for 22 years and 9 months and now that they were “empty-nesters”, they felt it was time to move. Their oldest son lives in the area and Debbie says he tried to “lure them with the promise of grandchildren”. However, since they already liked the area, it didn’t take much “luring”. B...

  • tehachapi incubates a startup sport plane moves to vacaville

Tina Fisher Cunningham, The Forde Files No 71|May 24, 2014

The sleek, uber-sexy ICON A5 Light Sport Aircraft will be manufactured in Northern California but Tehachapi is where it was born. From 2008 to the present, research and development of the recreational amphibious aircraft has been taking place in relative obscurity inside hangars at Tehachapi Municipal Airport. Now it is ready to meet the world and the A5 is leaving the nest. ICON Aircraft Company officers confirmed on May 14, 2014, that they selected Vacaville as the location for its...

  • The kids love rocket science

Tina Fisher Cunningham, The Forde Files No 71|May 24, 2014

Tehachapi students compete for Space Challenge top honors For two hours on the morning of May 21, the cheers at Tehachapi Municipal Airport were deafening as Tehachapi Unified School District fourth and fifth grade students from all three elementary schools – pressed against a barrier fence a safe distance from the launch pads – urged their home-made rockets upward toward the drifting clouds. It was the annual Intermediate Space Challenge, organized by the Arts, Science and Technology Committee...

  • Bob Hoover – A Pilot's Pilot

    Cathy Hansen|Feb 1, 2014

I have met so many people through the years who talk about the history of Mojave – the L.A. Aqueduct, Southern Pacific Railroad, the gold and silver mines and of course, Mojave Airport. It is always fun to share the rich history of Mojave! I have heard comments and questions like: "I didn't know that Mojave Airport had been a Marine Corps Air Station" or "Why don't we hold the air races at Mojave Airport anymore?" Mojave Airport was constructed by Kern County in 1935 and the dirt strip was used...
