Storytelling in music is as old as melody. Although today's pop music tends to focus more on "beats" than ballads, musical storytelling is still alive and well in acoustic music. Over the last seven years, Fiddlers Crossing has been bringing some of the best musical storytellers to Tehachapi. Berkley Hart, returning for their second appearance in the venue August 4, is certainly in the top tier of musical storytellers. The combination of Kerrville New Folk Songwriter Award winner, Jeff Berkley,...
If you have ever driven Hwy 154 north of Santa Barbara on a Sunday afternoon and stopped at the Cold Spring Tavern for a tri-tip sandwich, you will undoubtedly remember the "good-time" blues music that went along with it. Tom Ball, on harmonica and vocals, and Kenny Sultan, on guitar, have been playing their own brand of American roots styles of music together for 35 years, and outside on the porch of the Tavern on Sundays for much of that time. On Saturday, July 15, at 7 p.m., Fiddlers...

Camp Kiya has offered songwriting classes in the past, but plans to have a full workshop this year. Kerry Patrick Clark and Peter Romano are returning to head up the program. They will be joined by Max Valentino, who will also teach bass, percussion and guitar, as in past years. Camp Kiya is a traditional music camp for...

Spring is finally here! The sun is out, the days are warmer and longer and flowers are in bloom everywhere. The beauty of the season stirs the senses and the soul. The same can be said for great music. Believing wholeheartedly in this sentiment, Fiddlers Crossing will present Jill Knight and The Luckys on Saturday, May 20 at 7 p.m. The band combines elements of Folk, Americana, Blues and R & B to create what they call "Soulful Americana." Jill Knight, lead singer and songwriter, is no stranger...
The "big dream" for many singer-songwriters is to have their music used in film or TV scores. For Ernest Troost, it was the other way around. Troost became an Emmy Award-winning composer of movie and TV scores first, and only recently became an award-winning folk-blues songwriter, as well. "Songwriting was something I had put in the trunk and sat on for 20 years because it was an impractical thing to do," he said. "I hadn't done it since high school." Ernest Troost will return to Fiddlers...

Now that March is finally here, we're starting to see the first hints of green in Tehachapi. With the cold, wet winter, the weather seems more normal this year. The trees did not bud out in February, and the daffodils are just starting to push up their green spears. What a perfect year to celebrate "the wearing of the green" on St. Patrick's Day. To Fiddlers Crossing, it's all the more perfect because it comes on a Friday, which means there will be music in the popular downtown venue. A special...
The Fiddlers Crossing poster for West My Friend reads: "Canadian eclectic acoustic ensemble." The quartet of young and accomplished musicians from Vancouver Island has also been called an "Indie folk pop band," or simply "Indie roots." Other music reviewers have called the band, "Third-wave indie rock pop with four-part harmonies," and their style, "Cascadian third-wave indie progressive chamber folk-roots music." Obviously, West My Friend defies being pigeon-holed into any one genre. Their blen...
Juni Fisher is no stranger to these parts. She has already given four sold-out concerts in Fiddlers Crossing and will ride into town March 3 for her fifth appearance. Fisher is the real deal – a Western singer who actually IS a cowgirl. Many of her songs are about women rodeo riders of bygone days, and she can be funny and poignant at the same time. Fisher grew up horse crazy on a San Joaquin Valley citrus farm, achieving 4-H and FFA honors, listening to the music of Marty Robbins, Joan Baez a...

C. Daniel Boling has been called "a thinking man's singer/songwriter." While most of his songs and stories are simply about relationships -- with his wife, children, parents and life itself – there is nothing that sounds simple about them. Boling, said one reviewer, is "one of those characters who can keep you glued to his telling about a whole day in his life without your getting bored at all." The award-winning singer/songwriter will be in concert at Fiddlers Crossing on Friday, Oct. 28, at 7...

In the world of Folk and Americana music, some traditional songs have been beloved for centuries and are known all over the world. They form the basis of our musical heritage and are well-loved by performers and audiences alike. Occasionally a song composed by a contemporary songwriter appears and is so universal in its appeal that it quickly becomes a de-facto "traditional" song. One of these is "A Walk in the Irish Rain," by Steve Spurgin. It has been performed and recorded by dozens of...
