  • Endings and beginnings

    Mel White, contributing writer|Jan 8, 2022

Usually when we put up new calendars I like to write a rah-rah sis-boom-bah column about the joys of starting a brand new year. Endings and beginnings! Out with the old! In with the new! Look ahead! Start over! Clean slate! Well, not so much this year. Like many of us, after a few years of being absolutely hopeful that the new year was going to be better than the last one, I find myself tiptoeing up to 2022 in order to peek around some corners and keep my fingers crossed and my hooded, wary...

  • Christmas before Rudolph

    Pat Gracey, contributing writer|Dec 18, 2021

The first time I heard about Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer was in 1950. My Marine husband and I had been married eight months and were living in a Quonset Hut at Camp Pendleton. It was late November and Gene Autry, the cowboy movie star of that era, was on the radio singing his heart out about the latest addition to Santa's transportation system. I know Autry owned a baseball team (the L.A. Angels) but he must have had a large interest in the radio station too, for his voice and that song came...

  • Kind gestures

    Mel White, contributing writer|Aug 14, 2021

First and foremost I want to offer a big thank you to ... well, I don't really actually know whom to thank. When she did come by my table she just told me to have a n...
