When I was 16, I worked for the Tehachapi News taking photos and writing, and I was the sports editor. I had a 1971 Pontiac Firebird (which I still own) and my friend Dan Wells helped me paint it. Originally it was a lame shade of avocado green like a Sears refrigerator of the era, so my friend Dan Wells helped me repaint it a deep Warrior green. One Friday night I had driven the Firebird down to Bakersfield to cover a Garces football game, and had taken my friend Bill Millhollin, who was the...

As previously speculated, Kris Krempien was recently named head coach of the Tehachapi Warriors football program, taking over for departing Doug DeGeer after three seasons and a COVID-cancellation. As fate would have it, he came to Tehachapi searching for a chance to be an assistant coach, which he was for one season;...

As temperatures rise and families take to their backyard swimming pools and visit other bodies of water to cool off, Kern County Public Health urges everyone to take steps to keep your kids safe. While water can be fun for kids and a great way to escape the heat, it can also pose serious dangers. Safe Kids International reports that drowning is the third leading cause of death among children 19 and under. According to the Kern County Child Death Review Team (CDRT), in 2020, three children died...

By now you all are aware of the fruit tree shortage. It's happening all over America. Apple, peach, nectarine, apricot, cherry and pear trees are hard to find this spring for a couple of reasons. First, two of the three bare root companies have closed for good! These three companies sold to all 50 states and Canada. You can see what a dent it has made in nursery stock. Second, the pandemic. How can this affect the nursery business, you ask. Well, everyone has been home looking for something to...
Another wave of Tehachapi schoolchildren returned to Tehachapi Unified School District (TUSD) campuses on April 12 in scaled-down, phased-in classes and schedules designed to minimize COVID-19 exposure. The students are divided into two groups – A and B – that attend in-person instruction on separate days, therefore, half the district's students are engaged in in-person instruction at the same time. "Those groups don't mix," TUSD Superintendent Stacey Larson-Everson said at the April 13 TUS...

The program works like this: there are nine rounds or stations that you navigate through. Each round is three minutes with a 30 second break in...
Thank you to all who wrote emails or sent other correspondence expressing your appreciation for the typo-inspired column about the late Coy Burnett, the namesake of our football stadium. It was nice to hear some reassurance about the man and his rightful place on the sign adorning our facility. I had mentioned in that piece about the move in the late 1950s from nearby Imhof Field that had previously served as the home of the Warriors prior to Burnett's generosity. Here it is another day and...
For almost a year now, things have been really unusual for our community. Many people have been home more and at work less. I think maybe our pets have been thrilled to have us home. But when they do accidentally get out and go roaming, there really aren't the same authorities out there to pick them up and get them to safety. Due to the pandemic, most of the animal shelters are either closed or on limited working hours, and it has become difficult to go through the steps we used to take to try...
