The religious celebration of Easter is eternal and the reason for the commemoration of the day –the resurrection of our Lord, Jesus Christ, from the dead –never changes. The traditions, however, do change from age to age and in different cultures. Apart from the traditional worship services of this holy day, communities, such as ours, are seen observing local customs that tie into Easter, as well. Not too many years back, it was a tradition on Good Friday for businesses to close from noon unt...
It’s Girl Scout cookie time, however, this year in Tehachapi it will look a little different. In the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, the four Tehachapi Girl Scout troops will, understandably, not be able to have a sales booth at their normal locations of Albertsons, SaveMart and Walmart. However, when one door closes, another opens and the Girl Scout Troops have been blessed with other locations where they will be allowed to have booths until March 21. The Golden Hills Water District Office (...
The two brothers, Coyote and Wolf, went to dance with the bears at Walker Basin. They had a picnic down there and a big dance. Everyone danced, and they danced all night. Coyote's tail was "sparking like a battery" at the top. His brother said, "What's the matter with you?" He was so excited, sparks were coming off his tail. Coyote said nothing and kept dancing. An old lady was gathering wood all night for the fire. She lost her tobacco. She said "pu-zi-ni-kaax." No one could understand her....
This is the seventh article in a continuing series about local military veterans and their service to our great country. John and his twin brother were born on April 17, 1942 in Suffolk, Virginia. His family soon moved to Newport News, Virginia, where his father worked at the famous Newport News shipyard and, in the early 1950s, became one of the first African-American police officers to serve with the Newport News Police Department. As John recalled, "Newport News is a military community and I...

The winners of The City of Tehachapi and The Loop newspaper's holiday decorating contest were presented plaques, each featuring a photo of their winning home. The contestants were very competitive and the judges all said that it was obvious a lot of thought went into designing the displays. Many included homemade elements while others went for the "wow" factor making the decisions even harder. Congratulations to all the winners! No photo was available for the Golden Hills winner located at...
The City of Tehachapi and The Loop newspaper have collaborated to sponsor a holiday decorating contest for both homes in Tehachapi communities including Stallion Springs, Bear Valley Springs and Golden Hills, as well as businesses within the city limits. After much consideration by the judges, here are the winners of the Holiday Light Contest. Since all of the lights were so fantastic, the judges really struggled to pick the winners. Some of them went out to look at the lights two or three...
Assemblyman Vince Fong (R-Kern County), issued the following statement in regards to the passing of General Chuck Yeager: "General Yeager was an American legend, and one of our nation's best aviators and test pilots. Breaking the sound barrier over the Mojave Desert 73 years ago led to tremendous aerospace achievements and technological advancements. We have lost an American hero. He was a true pioneer that helped establish the East Kern County legacy of aerospace innovation. Thank you for...
Assemblyman Vince Fong (R-Kern County), Vice Chair of the Assembly Transportation Committee, introduced AB 5 to stop the High Speed Rail and to dedicate remaining bond funds for K-12 education. The High Speed Rail project has been under scrutiny since 2008 for major cost overruns, mismanagement and massive delays. In order to address a $54 billion budget deficit, California passed a budget deferring billions of dollars for education. AB 5 will put the brakes on High Speed Rail for two years, fre...
Assemblyman Vince Fong (R-Kern County) introduced a bill with colleague Assemblyman Jordan Cunningham (R-San Luis Obispo) that would limit the Governor's ability under the California Emergency Services Act (CESA) to unilaterally enact or change laws or regulations 60 days after the emergency was declared. Specifically, AB 108 would require the Governor to seek approval of the Legislature for any proposed changes to laws and regulations under CESA 60 days after the emergency declaration. This...

The holiday season and what comes with it is a welcome distraction from the past 10 months of 2020. The City of Tehachapi has decided to sponsor a holiday decorating contest for both businesses and homes in the city limits. "Seeing all of the lights and decorations puts a smile on faces of all ages," said Greg Garrett Tehachapi City Manager....
They say it takes a village to raise a child, and I've written about how it also took a village to get me through my knee replacements and various other surgeries. Indeed, what would we do without the help of friends in our times of need? It turns out it also takes a village to make a major move (as in moving from one house to another); in other words, what would we do without the help of strangers, either, every now and then? I made the decision to downsize and move to a smaller place some...
The best known stories often begin with a birth, and ours is no different – it began when Rebecca Lynn was born on August 20, 1990. Although she was born in Salinas, California, Rebecca was raised in Tehachapi for the majority of her life, where she attended school, worked and later raised her daughter, Delilah. A single-mother, Rebecca was diagnosed with breast cancer, several months before her 26th birthday in 2016. After bravely fighting it for several years, without complaint, she lost t...
Assemblyman Vince Fong (R-Kern County) issues the following statement regarding Governor Newsom's Executive Order, which bans fracking and gas powered vehicles: "Reality does not care about political theater. The reality is that there are real costs and job loss, particularly in the Central Valley, due to Gavin Newsom's decisions today [Sept. 23, 2020]. The responsible thing to do right now is to ensure we have sound energy policy that will provide an affordable, reliable and sustainable path...
My husband and I are the happy owners of a home in West Golden Hills. We purchased the property in March 2020. While the house was in great shape, the .6 acre backyard was largely unfinished. The house has a pool, but the pool deck area needed a lot of work to make it functional and beautiful – including removing an old sun room and old wrought iron fencing. We had some ideas on what we would like to do with the property, in particular wanting to open up the view out of the back of the house (which was largely blocked by the sunroom and f...

Assemblyman Vince Fong (R-Kern County) issued the following statement regarding the mounting statewide frustration with EDD and their inability to issue unemployment benefits in a timely manner to Kern County residents and Californians across the state: "EDD is clearly broken and many of my constituents are having difficulties. My office is working with hundreds of constituents to try and break through the many bureaucratic inefficiencies that plague EDD. It is clear that the status quo is not...
I have been around race tracks and motorsports most of my life, learning photography on a drag strip. That's the safe place to race your hot rod street car, not the streets, as I have seen all over Kern County for years. Sergeant Robert Pair of the Bakersfield Police Department has been on all of the local news stations and radio broadcasts commenting that, "It's not just law enforcement's problem, it's a community problem." On Aug. 9, the Bakersfield Police Department responded to reports of...
A small knoll overlooking Meadowbrook Park in Golden Hills has long been home to about 30 Tehachapi pioneers. They don't live there, but rather their earthly remains were laid to rest there in hand-dug graves in the Tehachapi soil more than 100 years ago. After each death, a wagon pulled by a team of horses would slowly carry the casket up the rutted dirt track to the little cemetery on the hill, followed by grieving survivors in buggies, on horseback or on foot. Once at the cemetery, a...
The Kiwanis Club of Tehachapi honors Tehachapi High School (THS) 2020 graduate Meagan Williams, recipient of the club's $1,000 2020 college scholarship. "I am enrolling as a student athlete in the honors transfer program with plans of transferring to a California State University or University of California," she said in her scholarship application. A member of the California Scholarship...
House Resolution 97 passed out of the State Assembly with unanimous bi-partisan support. HR 97 directs the High Speed Rail Authority to halt the signing of new maintenance and construction contracts until the legislature has the opportunity to consider alternatives for spending the remaining bond funds. Assemblyman Vince Fong (R-Kern County), vice chair of the Assembly Transportation Committee, is a co-author of HR 97. “We must not permit unelected bureaucrats to unilaterally lock us into paying for this train for the next three decades. It is...
“Passing a budget that includes a $9 billion tax increase on struggling businesses and medical research for COVID-19 is simply tone-deaf. This is the worst possible time to burden businesses that are struggling to reopen and hire new workers. Making matters worse, Sacramento Democrats are rubbing salt into the wounds of California taxpayers by funding the mismanaged and costly High Speed Rail project even during a time of budget crisis. We should halt all new taxes and regulations in order to get back on track as quickly as possible for the m...
Assemblyman Vince Fong (R-Kern County), Vice Chair of the Assembly Committee on Transportation, released a video of his closing statements during the recent Committee on Transportation oversight hearing for the California High-Speed Rail (HSR) Authority’s 2020 Business Plan. The Business Plan proposes to use all remaining HSR funds (approximately $5 billion) to build a HSR line between Merced and Bakersfield. The total cost of this 171 mile segment from Merced to Bakersfield is projected to c...
Assemblyman Vince Fong (R-Kern County) issued the following statement in response to Kern County’s attestation approval to move further into Stage 2 of re-opening: “I want to commend the tremendous work by Kern County as our county received approval to move efficiently through the state’s stage 2 re-opening phase of our local economy, which now includes dine-in restaurant service and malls with certain precautions. Our county leaders, local businesses, hospitals and community leaders will continue to work around the clock to advance to the n...
