Dalton and David SteeleReed of Tehachapi and Rachel Newkirk of West Golden Hills have taken the concept of Tehachapi hiker hospitality to a new dimension with the opening of their Hiker Depot in a house at 115 S. Mojave St. At the house, named "Wits' End," Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) hikers can relax, make connections, use the wi-fi, recharge their devices, collect and send packages of supplies or grab a snack. "This is a new thing for Tehachapi," Dalton SteeleReed said. "We are open 8 a.m. to 4...
Kiwanis Club was fortunate to hear from two historic women, American Association of University members who participated in Women's History presentations. Diane Bergstrom portrayed poet Edna St. Vincent Millay and Laura Amstead was Beverly Cleary, children's author. Both were informative and entertaining. Millay was an American poet and playwright who received the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1923. She was also known for her feminist activism. At 102 years old, Cleary is America's most...

The first two months of the calendar year were considerably drier than usual, with 0.91 inches in January (1.26 inches less than normal) and 0.14 inches in February (1.59 inches less than normal). Thanks to the Tehachapi Lions Club, first graders in the Tehachapi Unified School District received their own U.S. flags along with some flag education during the week of February 20-24. The "Flags for First Graders" program is an annual youth project of the Lions and is done in conjunction with President's Day. Over 500 first graders received small flags, heard a brief history of the flag and also watched a demonstration on the proper way to fold a flag. To find out more about your local...

Their trek passed through magnificent scenery, diverse habitats, and afforded the chance to see birds moving northbound, from spring migration to summer breeding. With stunning photography and storytelling, this evening presentation with guest speakers Bob and Susan Steele will take you along the mountainous...
I often hear people say, "It's never been this hot before!" Later, "It's never been this cold before!" Don't forget to mention, "We've never had such a dry year before!" or "We've never had this much rain before." Actually, the only answer to that is, "Yes, we have." This past year, however, has been a real pain to those who mourn the lack of moisture of any kind. A couple of rains and a spitting of snow and we're back to "sunny days ahead" Sunny California is certainly earning its name. January...
The one thing that is missing in the Tehachapi valleys on a hot summer day is an ole swimming hole. Michelle Vance, manager of the Tehachapi Valley Recreation and Park District, aims to remedy that defect by opening Brite Lake (Jacobsen Reservoir) to swimming. While the Tehachapi-Cummings County Water District owns Brite Lake, the Rec & Park district manages the campground and fishing access. The two public districts are negotiating a change in the historic ban on swimming in the lake. "The proc...

After 13 years in Lancaster, Carlos and Mary Jane Aguirre said that they wanted something better for their family. They found a piece of land in Tehachapi on which they decided to build their own home. Carlos had a friend who owned a construction company and together they would build the house. Their house in Lancaster sold quicker than they expected so they moved onto their property in an RV along with their nine-year-old son Daniel and their two dogs, Coco and Princess. They pictured the...
One of my favorite things about helping to organize a large event like the upcoming Day of the Dead Festival is getting to know the participants better. The Tehachapi Heritage League event could not exist without the volunteers, artists, and dancers that help make any festival a well rounded experience. But one of the reasons a lot of people go to festivals is for the vendors. Sales and food vendors were a huge part of last year's success, and we are lucky to have most of them returning, as...
Years ago U.S. Highway 466 came directly through Tehachapi. Trucks rumbled by and auto traffic on the way to Bakersfield and parts north passed through town. Many stopped to stretch their legs and have coffee at the local cafes. The highway did not continue west through town as it does now, for Main Street dead ended as it came to Curry Street. Travelers had to make a sharp left to continue down Curry before heading northwest again. A portion of the road that is now Route 202 was once called...
The Old Tehachapi Cemetery was established in 1858, just a few years after early settlers came to Williamsburg, now called Old Town. This is not the resting place of the vast land owners, but of the merchants, constables and mail carriers. Everyday people who were the backbone of a budding community found a resting place on a barren acre in Golden Hills. For this reason it is sometimes referred to as the Pioneer Cemetery. No one has been buried there for ninety years and the site is mostly forgo...
"It's a small world, isn't it?" You hear people say that all the time but it was my meeting Dan and Ruth Schopen that brought true meaning to that statement. I asked Dan where he was born, he said Evanston, Ill. I said, "Me too". He said he was raised in a suburb of Chicago named Wilmette, I said, "Me too." He asked me what street I lived on and he grew up on the street right behind where I grew up. We left Illinois when I was eight, a little before his time, but who could imagine finding someon...

At the Aug. 8 School Board meeting, some Board members expressed their concern about recent vandalism at Golden Hills Elementary School. They wanted to be sure repairs could be made before students returned for the school year. It was proposed that members of the Tehachapi School Board take a letter to the Kern County Board of Education to ask for assistance, perhaps in the form of night and weekend security. At least two members will be attending the county meeting. The Board was asked to...

In a configuration similar to the nearby Love's Travel Stop, the project will have access points for vehicles on Tehachapi Boulevard and n...
June and July have been busy, action packed, fun months for the Carriage Club. On June 17, we held one of our clicker training workshops. These events are wonderful to watch. The most interesting thing is to see how the equines learn new skills and progress. One of the best parts of clicker training is that the animals really enjoy it, and are focused and engaged. Of course it takes time and patience for an equine and human team to master the skills involved and become proficient at new...
The Tehachapi Unified School District (TUSD) has implemented a program that seeks to change student bad behavior by rewarding good behavior. The concept is called Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support (PBIS) and is the outcome of a national initiative to find a better solution to disruptive behavior than suspension. "Students who are suspended have a higher dropout rate," Clair Rhea, learning director at Golden Hills Elementary School, said during a presentation at the Greater Tehachapi...
