  • Simply Perfect holiday gift ideas

    Mike Scotti, contributing writer|Mar 16, 2024

"Someday, I'm going to open a gift shop!" I would declare this each time I left a gift shop during retail therapy sessions with my friends. Fast forward to retirement in late 2019, after 20 years of teaching first, second and third graders only to be isolated by COVID-19. Although I had family close by, the pandemic made it difficult to cultivate new friendships and experience all that Tehachapi has to offer. Once the city began to reopen, an opportunity presented itself where my son's tour...

  • 'Do gooders' are everywhere

    Pat Gracey, contributing writer|Dec 23, 2023

Sitting around with family a few months ago, we began sharing stories, as families do, laughing at inside jokes which are funny only to those related, and just generally having a good time. By the way, at that family gathering we discovered we had, at present, four generations of Tehachapi High School graduates; incorporating years, 1937 to present time. Not bad! Speaking of "do-gooders," I recall one afternoon taking place at McDonald's twin drive-in lines. I decided I needed a cup of coffee...

  • The good scents of Tehachapi

    Jon Hammond, contributing writer|Sep 16, 2023

Humans tend to rely most heavily on our sense of vision to navigate and experience our surroundings, assisted by our hearing. But another powerful ability is our sense of smell, and this olfactory perception can connect to some of our strongest, most primal likes, dislikes and memories. A scent that matches ones in our memory can transport us to a place and time in our mind instantly, or evoke an association that seems elemental to our being. The smell of a cut pumpkin can immediately summon tho...

  • Grazing the ever-changing fields

    Lilliputs Nobleman, contributing writer|Sep 2, 2023

You know, after arriving here from Ireland some 7 months ago I didn't know what to expect. Ireland, as you're no doubt aware, is called the Emerald Isle because the land stays green year-round. Sure, the weather can get a tad tiresome with the misty rain and fog, but it's never very cold. However, I must say that my first winter here was a very cold one. And it's not just me being a wuss, as I heard the same thing from other horses, as well. I had to grow out my coat a bit more to stay warm. As...

Water in municipal and industrial areas, which are governed by the City of Tehachapi and Golden Hills, comes from a combination of groundwater and State Water Project (SWP) contracts with TCCWD. Allocation of SWP from the state is volatile year-to-year depending on drought conditions, however concerns have been raised as to how TCCWD is distributing allocated SWP. Despite the City...
