State takes precedence – On July 7, 2014 the Tehachapi City Council repealed a municipal ordinance it enacted in 2010 prohibiting sex offenders from loitering within 300 feet of any public or private school, park, school bus stop, children's facility or child daycare center. "On April 30, 2014," City Attorney Tom Schroeter wrote in his report to the city, "the City received a letter from California Reform Sex Offender Laws (CRSOL) advising the City of the case of People v Nguyen (2014) 222 CA 4...
Santa goes to School? It is true. There are special schools for Santas (and Mrs. Claus, elves, and other Santa's helpers, too)! Alan and Kathy Burgess, residents of Golden Hills, recently attended a very special school aboard the Island Princess cruise ship, and received their degrees in "Santaclausology." Following the Santa Cruise 2014, they also took a land tour of Alaska, Denali National Park, Fairbanks and the wonderful little town of North Pole, Alaska. Hundreds of Santa's and a few Mrs....
Kern County Fire Department hosted an open house for its newest seasonal fire station in the Tehachapi Valley. Located on property owned by the Golden Hills CSD, Station 13 as it's known is a "full service fire station" staffed 24hrs a day with a fire Captain, Engineer, and Firefighter. With their paramedic training and fire fighting capabilities the residents west of Tucker Road will be receiving much faster response times. Construction of the permanent Golden Hills station is right on track...
When one of my grandsons was in the Fourth Grade at Golden Hills Elementary - about 1998 - he was studying the history of California as all fourth graders do. It was then that I, a Native Californian, found out that our state song was "I Love You California." In all of my years in the Golden State I thought it was "California Here I Come!" Well, I went online, found it and listened to it for the first time. If you have enough time, it has a pleasant lilt but it does run on and on. One day as I...
The almost 165 acre property that was once home to a golf course, pool, driving range, tennis courts and a club house has long been a source of blight and concern for the residents of Golden Hills. However, that is about to change with the announcement that Golden Hills Community Services District (GHCSD) has purchased the property with the intention of cleaning it up and making it a usable community space. “This is a dream come true to be able to do this,” said GHCSD Board President Ed Kennedy. “The community has been discussing how and what t...
Police Chief Mike Grant made a presentation, Gangs 101, to Neighborhood Watch group on Wednesday, April 23. In addition to gangs locally, Grant detailed the various gangs on the west coast, how to spot them and their organizational structure. He noted that most gang members are quite passive to the general public so as not to attract attention. However, they can become aggressive if provoked. Currently there are no major gang problems in Stallion Springs but it is always good to be vigilant....
On Saturday, May 3, Tehachapi area residents cleaned out garages, sheds and backyards during the Second Annual Community Clean-up Day. Hundreds of local folks brought in sofas, hot water heaters, washers, dryers, computers, TVs and boxes of documents for shredding to one of four locations in Bear Valley Springs, Golden Hills, Stallion Springs and the City of Tehachapi. According to Neil Agness, with Alianza (Electronic Waste) Recycling, "People brought in hundreds, maybe thousands, of old...
The Tehachapi Valley Healthcare District board of directors approved an expenditure of $25,000 to hire financial advisor and investment banker Gary Hicks to provide a plan for raising $20 million to complete the construction budget of the Tehachapi Replacement Critical Access Hospital. Interim Chief Executive Officer Evan Rayner said at the Mar. 26 board meeting at the Golden Hills Community Services District that the district "will come up with new ideas and explore other avenues of financing...
At its Mar. 19 meeting, the Tehachapi-Cummings County Water District board of directors mulled and tabled a proposal to pay for the construction of a new well that possibly could prevent a cutback in agricultural water delivery this drought year. The Golden Hills Community Services District would own the well, dubbed the Steuber Well after its location off Steuber Road just north of Highline Road at the east end of the Tehachapi Basin. Under the proposal, set forth by district Manager John Marti...
On Thursday Feb. 20, Have a Heart Humane Society's Rosemary Evans (Thunder Paws Dog Training) went to Golden Hills Elementary School and talked to 125 First Graders about how to care for their dogs. Rosemary asked the children questions about what dogs need to live and nearly every hand rose to answer. Pharaoh, a one year old Lab, who is being fostered by Fiona Nelson, for Guide Dogs of America, was also on hand. Under Fiona's skilled hand, Pharaoh helped the kids understand a guide dog's job....
I found an article that my mother Marion Deaver wrote in August of 1974 about the price of gold going up and regulations relaxing, and I thought about the Golden Queen Mine, just south of Mojave. In the article my mother interviewed Glenn Settle, owner of Tropico Gold Mine, west of Rosamond. President Gerald Ford had just approved legislation that would allow U.S. citizens to buy and sell gold. In 1974 the hills that rise above the valley in East Kern were mostly quiet, but some like Settle,...
In the early part of the 20th Century the little community of Tehachapi and surrounding areas were dotted with orchards, fields of grain and farms. Tehachapi boasted a population of 600 souls. I am not sure if those living on the outlying farms were counted in that census or not but since there was no Golden Hills, Stallion Springs or Bear Valley Springs communities, the extra population from those outlying farms would not have increased the number dramatically. Tehachapi Valley, Brite's Valley...
In 2010, the principle water purveyors in the Greater Tehachapi area completed a Regional Urban Water Management Plan. In it, the Tehachapi-Cummings County Water District as Watermaster, the city of Tehachapi and the Golden Hills, Stallion Springs and Bear Valley community services districts mapped out a long-term plan for water management and conservation. The State Water Project's Jan. 31 declaration of a zero allocation for all its customers was not on the radar when that report was written....
Neighborhood Watch held its regular meeting on Monday, Jan. 20 in the Emergency Operations Center at the Stallion Administration Building with over 40 residents in attendance. Police Chief Mike Grant said, “The police department has had some challenges with staffing and it’s groups like this that help us in a serious manor to patrol the area and to be the eyes and ears in the community.” Grant reported, “Last month we had a significant number of people complaining about scams that are going on. Most of the scams are phishing scams that are goi...
